This is a goomba.  In Japanese they are called Kuribo, which means chestnut. Because they look like chestnuts.  Their name was changed in English to a slur for an Italian American, but because you can't be racist against white people nobody really cares. Some goombas have wings for some reason.  Bowser mainly uses goombas as the bulk of his forces for his army.  However, all they really seem to do is walk menacingly. They don't even bite with their fangs.  Mario has no problem with simply jumping on a goomba's head, crushing it's organs and sqlurting out viscera in all directions.
