everyone probably has fond memories of children's books from when they were a lil' goon; given current circumstances let's escape into nostalgia and get our caldecott on itt

this thread is inspired by me finding out that a bunch of Peter Spier books are no longer in print and now outrageously expensive. I love his art style and had both Rain and Bored-Nothing To Do! and loved them both as a kid.

do kids even read picture books anymore?

Couldn't afford picture books when I was kid so I just got looseleaf and told to use my imagination.

Just chillin' in the sink

Apparently this costs hundreds of dollars now so my soon-to-be-arriving daughter will never get to read it.

This book was the poo poo. Looked it up on Amazon just now and they're selling the hard cover for only :10bux:!

this place is not a place of honor

no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here

nothing valued is here

what is here was dangerous and repulsive to us

this place is best shunned and left uninhabited

This is really nerdy but: When I was in elementary school, maybe 3rd grade or so, I loved reading about Greek myths and legends. One day I discovered a children's introduction to The Iliad and the Odyssey in the school library, and I was enthralled. According to the checkout card, I was the only child to ever check it out, and I did it a lot.

For a kid's book it had some really amazing illustrations

I really should go buy a copy, there's one on Ebay right now.

one of my favorites has always been the runaway bunny. the illustrations are just perfect and it's about a mother's love for her son:

“I will be a bird and fly away from you.”
“If you become a bird and fly away from me,” said his mother,
“I will be a tree that you come home to.”

“If you become a tree,” said the little bunny,
“I will become a little sailboat, and I will sail away from you.”
“If you become a sailboat and sail away from me,”said his mother,
“I will become the wind and blow you where I want you to go.”

“If you become the wind and blow me,” said the little bunny,
“I will join a circus and fly away on a flying trapeze.”
“If you go flying on a flying trapeze,” said his mother,
“I will be a tightrope walker, and I will walk across the air to you.”

I don't know if these count, but I used to love the I Spy books as a kid

The scenes in the pictures were so intricate. I still think they're pretty cool.
