Not sure you should bin your head epidemiologist in the middle of a pandemic for a PR fuckup.

Considering he was one of the reasons we didn't do absolutely nothing and become a failed plague state, this is worrying. He isn't there to inform our big brained ministers that letting the NHS collapse isn't going to improve the economy. They need clever people to remember that hospital beds are not infact infinite.

I can understand the ideological stance of being against 'hand outs'. I don't agree with it but I understand it. But all the people saying this poo poo seem to have forgot there's a pandemic. It's like they think it's over but people are still staying at home for fun. If easing the lock down isn't done correctly it'll gently caress things up way worse than having to pay people for another couple of months. They literally can't think more than a week ahead.

How do the factors interact? Say i'm less than 40 but recovering from cancer, do you take the highest risk factor ratio or is it an average between them?

They're ratios that should be accounting for other factors. So if having lymphoma over 5 years ago makes you twice as likely to die of COVID-19, that's twice as likely as someone who hasn't in the same age group. So for an <40 that's double gently caress all, but for 40-49 it's twice as likely as a quarter as likely as a 50-59 year old (so still half as likely).

Government are still advising under 40s on immunosuppressants to stay fully isolated though.

Ah I see. Thanks.

I'm not defending the government here, but how are they possibly going to excuse the second wave that happens in 2 weeks time? Is it not possible that they're just really stupid and still don't understand this disease? Wouldn't every scientist and heath specialist involved have to be in on the secret herd immunity plan?

I don't even get the economic argument to be honest, surely even killing everyone the virus can kill in a "controlled" manner is gonna cause far more economic damage than figuring out how to make it work without killing people.

Of course that also makes sense from the stupid tory angle whereby they can't think past next week and also don't want to bother managing a major shift in how the economy works.

Yeah, the fallout from all the deaths is going to gently caress everything up so much harder than this current outbreak. People are going to notice when no one can get funeral spaces. It's going to be hard for them to explain why we're the only nation in Europe that still has thousands dying and at increasing rates.

Whatever their reasoning a master plan this is not.

Like if this is some master plan to make people ignore the lockdown I don't think it's going to work very well because they've done a very good job of making a lot of people think the lockdown is important, in part by killing fifty thousand people.

There’s also the nhs imploding. They can’t ignore that. The problem wasn’t capacity, it was staff. They can’t just fill every bed and ignore it. We simply don’t have the doctors and nurses. The nhs would collapse and people would notice.

Kids are already doing a much better job at seeing through it than the old are.

Also strictly the death toll I think is more likely to top out around 300 000 in the immediate term because once about 50% of people have been infected that's likely to reduce the chance of a viable host enough to push the infectivity below 1 even without distancing.

So you know, swings and roundabouts.

Yeah but doesn't the immunity eventually run out? So you'd need an outbreak at least once a year and also another 300,000 deaths? You know the thing the herd immunity crew keep ignoring.

That's my Welsh government!

I don't know what the fuckers actually do. The only money to be made here is from tourism. And those are hosed. Wonder how bad it's going to get.

For an example of Welsh governing: Colwyn Bay council vacillated on whether to fix it's famous pier for two decades until it just fell apart in a storm one day.

How are they so loving dumb?

The hospitals will just fall over again. If there's one bit of good news, that's not really good, it's that we can't brute force our way through this like America is doing.

I don't think the government is going to get away with just ignoring a second wave. As dumb as this country people do seem worried about covid. They're too stupid to actually keep themselves safe but it does worry them.

When NHS workers are telling any reporter they can find that everything has gone to poo poo again there's going to be no way to stop the backlash. People like the NHS. The workers are everywhere and they are going to be telling people that everything is hosed. This isn't like the US where the hospital is just another business. If the NHS openly declares war on Boris then lollll.

All we can do now is keep ourselves and anyone you like safe.
