shovelbum posted:Specialists own their own labor and ER is employees right Specialists have name recognition, Dr Johnson and his minimally invasive bullshit and all that. They can take their ball (ie patient list) and leave, so hospitals are quick to kowtow to their demands. Orthopods, cardiac surgeons, etc Nobody comes to the hospital for a specific EM doc, anesthesiologist, radiologist, etc so they have little leverage in negotiations.

I don't think so, it's Trump literally saying "there are a lot of masks, plenty of masks" and he believes in his brain that there really are more masks because he said the words and the universe will make them become true, he really thinks he's helping I envy Trump's ability to just believe whatever he wants, maybe moreso than I envy his wealth (to redistribute not hoard, of course)

power word- Jeb! posted:yeah it's this. several med goons have posted about how this has pulled people back from the brink but admin put a kibosh on it bc of the shortages/pricetag Sarulimab is the big one that's being studied since March16 but we haven't heard anything one way or another since. Anecdotally Ive heard it has a clinical effect (ie: numbers improve) but no obvious effect on mortality/vent days. We've used plenty of tocilizumab at my hospital and it doesnt seem to do anything. I forget the major difference between the two drugs but it's an older il6 inhbitior. I really dont think a paradigm shifting treatment is gonna come out. Maybe some stuff like remdesivir, where its effective but not in a game changing way.

How is the apparent absence of the predicted spike being explained anyways? ~3 weeks should be enough time for an increased case/fatality rate to show up and I dont think they can fudge the numbers quite that much

Thoguh posted:Yeah, if this thing ripped through Congress without a single one of them having more than a mild case and not even a single hospitalization that would mean everything we know about it is wrong. Mmm I'm not so sure. Who's the sickest member of Congress? They are all in ostensibly good health, no? Donald Trump isn't really sick sick, either. Sure he eats like poo poo but Im gonna assume they keep his blood pressure/sugar controlled. Boris Johnson was in the "ITU" but that could have just been an observational thing for a head of state.

Thoguh posted:Lots of people in great health have died from this. Cite your sources Let's consider the possibilities: a) All these politicians managed to avoid getting it despite travelling and interacting with many different people b) the politicians DID get it but have a secret treatment available to them, unknown to anyone else c) the politicians did get it and managed to be fine because they are in good health generally "c" seems most likely to me personally

Thoguh posted:You're a loving idiot if you think this disease only impacts people already on deaths door. No, but people in good health do far better than those with uncontrolled morbidities. How do you explain the zero fatalities among our politicians? Genuinely curious. If you think it's because they managed to keep from being exposed somehow, sure I could accept that. But lol if you're calling me a loving idiot when there's people ITT who are convinced that the politicians have some top-secret COVID cure

Oneiros posted:another thing is that unless you're working as an "essential employee" engaging with the public on a regular basis you have absolutely no need for a n95 mask unless your job already required one; they require proper fitting and training to use properly and some random one you bought from home depot or alibaba and strapped on isn't gonna offer much benifit over relatively loose fitting surgical mask or bandana. especially if it's the type with an exhalation valve because then if you are infected you're just spraying that poo poo thru it. It's not so much that they require "fitting", it's that the fit needs to be tested to ensure that they are providing sufficient protection. The masks come in 1-2 sizes As for the exhalation valve - respirators w/o these suck for extended use. The filter medium gets damp w/ your exhaled breaths and becomes difficult to breath through.
