Reminder that there is a BCG trial going on right now run by Texas A&M which is looking for 1,800 volunteers throughout the state of Texas. As far as I know you must be a medical worker to participate, and they might expand to LA and other parts of the country soon.

so whats the deal with sweden? honestly the numbers from over there dont seem that bad considering they arent murdering their own economy like everyone else

like as far as im concerned keep the quarantie going on forever because im still getting paid and working 2 hours instead of 8 with no commute and high as gently caress all day long but i know a lot of people are suffering economically and it will only get worse so maybe theres some truth to the idea of the cure being worse than the disease. i dunno im just asking q pls dont dogpile me

Many more are dying there than in the neighboring countries, but you are repeating a rightwing talking point which is based on a fallacy, which is that one must choose either between saving the economy or opening up society. The reality is much more nuanced.

First of all, Sweden's economy, like the rest of Europe and the world, is hosed. The IMF projects that Sweden will lose 6.8% of their GDP, which is admittedly not as high as the biggest losers in Europe (Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands), where losses will be closer to 8 or 9 percent, but it's still higher than the EU average of 6.4%. Having "no lock down" hasn't saved their economy.

Second, saying they have no lockdown is not correct. The different countries have had different approaches to lockdown and have enacted different measures, and they all exist on a number of spectrums. Sweden took different measures than most places, most notably leaving restaurants and shops open. However, other countries also left shops open. However, they did ban events, and also, very importantly, locked down their nursing homes early on to defend the elderly. There are still a lot more deaths than everywhere nearby though. But also much less than places like Belgium, which did a pretty heavy lockdown.

Anyway, the choice of murdering your economy or murdering your people is a false dichotomy. Even in Sweden a lot of people have changed their habits and are hiding inside and shopping less and avoiding restaurants. Young people still go to bars, sure, but it's not the same society it was 3 months ago. It didn't save their economy. This poo poo is not an on/off switch, there is nuance to every situation. By repeating these oversimplified talking points you are reinforcing the idiotic chud narrative.

Rates of 2007/2008 flu shots in Germany and Berlin

It doesn’t make sense that this would do anything against COVID, but this shows the persisting difference in attitudes among the public and healthcare professionals in different regions of Germany. It’s fun to live in the geopolitical power sphere that thinks mass vaccination is an invasion of individual liberty and most people don’t know how vaccines work and think they are made of methylmercury

East German vaccine commercial:

(Not technically a commercial if it’s made by the state without any commercial profit-driven motive, so I guess propaganda is a better word)

this court is persuaded. case dismissed. i award you court trophy. habeus corbeus

good enough excuse to repost my favorite common law story, about how habeus corpus became a law in the first place:

quote:

The Act came about because the Earl of Shaftesbury encouraged his friends in the Commons to introduce the Bill where it passed and was then sent up to the House of Lords. Shaftesbury was the leading Exclusionist—those who wanted to exclude Charles II's brother James, Duke of York from the succession—and the Bill was a part of that struggle as they believed James would rule arbitrarily. The Lords decided to add many wrecking amendments to the Bill in an attempt to kill it; the Commons had no choice but to pass the Bill with the Lords' amendments because they learned that the King would soon end the current parliamentary session.

The Bill went back and forth between the two Houses, and then the Lords voted on whether to set up a conference on the Bill. If this motion was defeated the Bill would stay in the Commons and therefore have no chance of being passed. Each side—those voting for and against—appointed a teller who stood on each side of the door through which those Lords who had voted "aye" re-entered the House (the "nays" remained seated). One teller would count them aloud whilst the other teller listened and kept watch to know if the other teller was telling the truth. Shaftesbury's faction had voted for the motion, so they went out and re-entered the House. Gilbert Burnet, one of Shaftesbury's friends, recorded what then happened:

Lord Grey and Lord Norris were named to be the tellers: Lord Norris, being a man subject to vapours, was not at all times attentive to what he was doing: so, a very fat lord coming in, Lord Grey counted him as ten, as a jest at first: but seeing Lord Norris had not observed it, he went on with this misreckoning of ten: so it was reported that they that were for the Bill were in the majority, though indeed it went for the other side: and by this means the Bill passed.

The clerk recorded in the minutes of the Lords that the "ayes" had fifty-seven and the "nays" had fifty-five, a total of 112, but the same minutes also state that only 107 Lords had attended that sitting.

The King arrived shortly thereafter and gave Royal Assent before proroguing Parliament. The Act is now stored in the Parliamentary Archives.

the only reason you have this right is because someone mocked an overweight person 350 years ago

Mask question.

Neither of us are coughing or sneezing much, and we're only wearing them for the 15 mins it takes to go to pick up some essentials.

Would they be reusable if we sprayed them down with disinfectant and went through them on a rota? We've only got 10 right now. I know the roni won't last 10 weeks on a surface but are there any other factors we should be considering?

virus dies eventually on all surfaces without a host, afaik, so I have been taking my used masks and putting them aside, with plans to resuse or wash them later, and using them in rotation

From CNN:

Do you have the 'skin hunger'?

The Dutch-born anthropologist Harald Prins points out the effect coronavirus has already had on his native language:
It appears, not surprisingly, that Covid-19 related neologisms are rampant in the Netherlands (and probably in most if not all other languages, too). I doubt most will survive but some will, albeit with unsuspected accretions.

In Dutch, for example, few realize that a popular word like "klerevent" (difficult to translate, but equivalent to bastard or rotten fellow) derives from cholera (klere).

Here are some Dutch corona neologisms with my free translations (but several terms resonate in a unique social-cultural way in the Netherlands):

Huidhonger / skin hunger: a longing for human contact while in isolation
Anderhalvemeteresamenleving / six-feet-society: an society constructed to avoid spreading coronavirus
Hoestschaamte / cough-shame: the anxiety one may experience about possibly triggering a panic among the people nearby when making a coughing sound for whatever reason
Coronahufter / coronajerk: shopper at a supermarket or store who violates the six-foot social distance prescription or other safe-keeping protocol.
Druppelcontact / spray-contact: exchange of little droplets when sneezing or coughing, esp. as source of infection
Onthamsteren / dehoarding: processing long-stored shelf-stable food into a meal.
Straatschaamte / street-shame: the embarrassment someone experiences when being out for urgently necessary errands during lockdown
Toogviroloog / blather-virologist: dilettante who spreads false or unsubstantiated information about the virus, its transmission, or its treatment

A new Dutch corona lexicon was created and is updated. It already comprises 700 new words, including those noted above.
