I'm looking forward into putting well over 100 hours into this game trying to 100% everything again before burning out and not actually finishing the story (again) :v:

Also I really love the nostalgia of calling them "Seven." Brings back the memories from the thread ten years ago.

I think the quests you had to do to get a couple of the rare blades were cool and I wonder if the plan was for that to be how you got a lot more of them but time constraints just threw them in the gacha.

“Gacha blades means every playthrough is different” is a sensible argument until you’re talking about an 80 hour JRPG that people are unlikely to finish once, much less two or more times.

Like, if it was a short game with a lot of branching paths/different ways to experience the content? Hell yeah, give me random blades, surprising and interesting combinations will make this game cooler.

But at one 80 hour run, it’s just a way to ruin the experience for some unlucky players, and to make completionists who were going to get all the blades anyway sink dozens of hours into tedious farming of that dumb cow for crystal drops.

I think the argument for keeping Gacha blades so playthroughs are different also includes making it so rare blades are actually the only ones in the pool (or insanely more likely to be pulled)

Can I sell all the junk that monsters drop if they're not for a current or future quest or is there going to be a crafting system or something later on that I'll want them for?

Yes I do, those give me visions and are marked with a blue ! in my inventory.

CaptainPsyko posted:

You could sell that stuff, but I’ve found that just selling the huge piles of rank 1-2-3 gem crafting poo poo, plus selling weapons and armor, has given me waaaaaaay more than enough money for all of my needs, and it’s nice to have that stuff just sitting in inventory for a) future quest turnins or whatever, and b) trade fodder with NPCs that let’s me circumvent other tedious collection stuff, since I’d rather trade monster drops that aren’t useful for anything else than collectibles that I can use for my desperate affinity farm gift spam eventually.

The “materials” section of the inventory is uncapped (unlike equipment, and gem materials), and there’s basically no reason to ever scroll through it unless you are trying to find things to sell, so, what’s the point? Just leave it be.

I didn't realize they were uncapped. Am I "safe" to sell the level 2 and 3 gem stuff? Level 3 is the highest I have so far, is it just not worth crafting until I get to 4?

Also wrt trading they're not worth much so they're kind of useless there.

There's a good guide on the xenoblade wiki about how affection works and it's worth reading. Especially learning that even giving a dobercorgi to Melia increases the affinity by 22 and it's 2000 to get to level 2.

it looks like it's only 1000 to get to level 2 according to https://xenoblade.fandom.com/wiki/Affinity_(XC1)

Cutscene skipping and dialogue mashing probably cuts like 30 hours at least. Massively overleveling everything after a point probably cuts a bit more and makes sidequests faster.

I decided to pick back up my old playthrough where I was going to try to do 100-ish percent (I might not do like every quest/unique monster or find every landmark/secret area but I'm probably gonna do as much as I can) and it's hard to remember how half the stuff in this game works optimally.

How important is weight? What's the best way to play Melia (I seem to remember that the difference between playing her vs letting the AI handle it is just absolutely massive compared to other characters)? Any just general tips I should remember or skills I should try to get?

I'm currently at the point where I can take a pod to Makna Forest on the way to Valak Mountain and figured now is a good time to do a ton of quests from the most recent city, especially to get affinity up between Melia and Sharla for the one quest that needs it in Colony 9.

When should I start bothering with gems in DE? And can someone supply me with an idiots guide to making them. Specifically a guide for idiots not one made by an idiot because I could do the latter myself :v:

I just got to Sword Valley because I decided to progress to a specific point in the story that comes shortly after that before going back to do a billion sidequests/mark hunts. My equipment isn't lacking but I'm intentionally messing with my levels with Expert Mode to keep from overleveling everything and don't know if I should be bothering to optimize gems at the same time at this point.

Further challenge is added by my team being Melia/Sharla/Riki for affinity grinding purposes :v:

it's because when Zanza dies so does Klaus and he's directly tied to the Conduit, which is what's holding like the entire world together. So Zana dies -> Klaus dies -> Conduit goes away -> if you didn't fix poo poo by now you probably can't anymore. The timing was only important because he was about to die, not because it had to happen when he dies, if I'm remembering correctly

I'm spoiling this for people who want to go in as blind as possible but this combat mechanic (as well as I guess probably early game world background stuff) is absolutely hilarious and probably maddening at first

from https://www.polygon.com/23197349/xenoblade-chronicles-3-preview-impressions-release-date-nintendo-switch

quote:

And as characters from each side of the conflict join together, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 feels like a similar marriage of the first two games’ combat styles. Kevesi soldiers like Noah, whose faction hails from the descendants of the titans Bionis and Mechonis, recharge their Arts on a timer just like in Xenoblade Chronicles; Agnian soldiers hailing from Alrest, like Mio, recharge their Arts with auto-attacks like you did in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Harrow posted:

They've talked about that mechanic before, but the background stuff is new info I think.

IIRC the mechanic is tied to classes and where the classes originate, rather than character, so a Kevesian character like Noah can have the other kind of art recharging if he switches to an Agnian class, or vice versa.

this rules I can't wait

I've seen a lot of spoilery stuff about 3 on the xenoblade wiki while just casually looking for stuff to help with my DE playthrough but most of it was something I already assumed, fortunately. But it's pretty clear that a lot of stuff is starting to come out from the review copies.

But like for instance (don't read this if you care at all about spoilers seriously) the picture for Melia in the "other people visited" suggestions is just literally a pic of the xbc3 masked character that people were assuming could be her and her bio page has stuff about her in the game that I fortunately only ended up reading a line or so of trying to skim through the page for something else

I never figured out XC1 chain attacks in my entire time playing.

doing arts of the same color adds a multiplier to the next one if it's also the same color and high affinities make it more likely that the chain will keep going after everyone has gone once. Talent Arts (the big white one in the middle of your skill bar) are wild cards and count as and for everything, which is what makes melia's so powerful since just using hers will be a powerful attack, add to the multiplier regardless, and also make the next art (if the chain continues) add to the multiplier and set the color to that.

Now that I have my full team together I've been going through sidequests for some "easy" affinity gain and good lord some of the things you have to do to get to the 4th skill tree for some people is absurd and I hope that's not something they bring back.

I like the idea behind the town affinity system and all but having a quest being locked behind not only having specific people registered but talking to one of them (after they're all registered) at a specific time of day to progress their affinity to a specific point is just a level too deep for me.
