I was going to make a thread in Post My Favorites talking about this, but decided to make it more interactive and put it in PYF instead. Does anyone else have obscure indie record labels that they're into? I'll start by talking about Diverse System (site is primarily in Japanese). Diverse System is a Japanese record label that's been around since 2000; they mostly release compilation albums themed around a certain genre (like the AD:Trance series) or concept (like the Works albums, which are meant to be listened to as ambiance while you work). Interestingly, they got their start releasing remixes of songs from Dance Dance Revolution and Konami's other rhythm games - that is, until Konami hit them with a cease and desist in 2010 (funnily enough, some of the artists on here actually went on to create music for Konami later). I highly recommend giving their albums a listen if you're into electronic music of any genre; they've got something for everyone! They have a Bandcamp where you can listen to their releases; they used to be available on Spotify but they pulled 99% of their stuff due to a problem with their publisher.

Data Airlines. Do you like chiptunes in various flavours? Heard of this thing called "demoscene"? Like things like releases on tapes or those old floppy disks*? Data Airlines is about all those things. Label started by demoscene veteran Dubmood (if you ever downloaded some , chances are you've heard his music), nowadays hosts a varied spread of electronic music, both oldschool and with more modern ingredients, like indie rock or fitted for movie soundtracks. Good stuff, bought some of the releases myself. They have a bandcamp page: https://dataairlines.bandcamp.com/ *no worries, they also deal in traditional CDs and digital formats Auris Apothecary is the label if you're into weird releases. Stuff like: ¼" Tape! 8-Tracks! Boxes of floppies! Half-melt tapes! Lathe discs covered in moss! And others! Yes, some of this stuff are collectable clearly art pieces, but still there is a decent selection of good old CDrs and cassette tapes. The releases are various subgenres of experimental music, from black metal to processed field recordings and noise. Never bought anything from there, but all of the music is avaiable to listen via bandcamp: https://aurisapothecary.bandcamp.com/ Kitty on Fire Records. Despite the unsettling name, the label deals not in extreme metal subgenres with disgusting artwork, but "Breakcore, Chiptune, [...] (POST)-cybergrind, Experimental, Glitch, IDM", so stuff more fitting for an obscure netlabel. They do some limited releases on tape, CDrs, vinyl and yes, floppies.

four flies records, named after the psychedelic movie "four flies on grey velvet", reissue italian soundtracks, much-coveted never-released production library music from film soundtrack and library composers who should be known to anyone with an interest in music - Piero Umiliani, Alessandro Alessandroni, Armando Trovaioli, I Marc 4, etc. https://fourfliesrecords.bandcamp.com/ An extended universe of ultra-low-fidelity hip hop producers purposely using the cheapest equipment, all themed around kung fu samples and tape hiss and low bitrate samples, out of Poughkeepsie, NY. They release mega-low-issue cassettes only, usually with custom art on each tape. This is such a massively productive scene that I kind of want a documentary about what seems to be a semi-large group of people in Poughkeepsie obsessing over kung fu VHS tapes and just absolutely bitcrushed, annihilated beats. Like I'd understand if there was one guy specifically into that aesthetic, but yeah. It's like a whole scene. My favorite is "5 Element Clones" (https://thejadepalaceguard.bandcamp.com/album/5-element-clones). There's a whole network of bandcamps here but the bigger ones seem to be: https://thejadepalaceguard.bandcamp.com/ https://sacredjadetapes.bandcamp.com/ Deep Glove Bruno has a new favorite as of 22:43 on May 25, 2020 |
