Backyard birbposting update: There's loads of tiny new fledgling bluetits around. They're adorable and would totally yell ACAB at the police:

Some bluetits nested in a little birdbox we have attached to the wall in the back garden. When they hatched I heard them yelling for food all the time, but I don't hear them anymore and I haven't seen any little babies flying around. I hope they are OK :(

Meanwhile there are approx. 50,000 starling fledglings that turn up every day and eat all the fat balls and mealworms we put out. They are very loud and honestly they're starting to get on my nerves because they poo poo everywhere and crowd out all the other birds (until the Magpie comes and chases them all away)

The bluetits probably travel a bit from their nestbox after fledging- I don't think they stick around so I wouldn't worry about it. Funnily enough we've had very few starlings here but the shopping center up the road is covered in 'em

Even if this new flu turns out to be a big deal, I'm surprisingly optimistic. If it had happened in a couple of years international flights would be more common than they are now, people would be less inclined to follow good hygiene practice, there'd be far fewer ppl wearing face masks in public and there wouldn't be a glut of funding going to epidemiology anymore. Thanks flu for popping up at the best possible time!

This is only half a joke. I often wonder how Corbyn would have gotten on if he'd just embraced the 'turbo stalin communist' poo poo.

As much as I'd be game to see it unfold I think the media would have gone to town on it in much the same way as they did with what we got instead. It might have diluted the constant AS reporting a bit because it's a second front they'd have to open but I suspect the end result would have been the same eventually.

You give yourself a lot more to work with if you respond to 'you are a communist!' with, 'yes, I am, and here's why' rather than 'um, no, well, actually I am a democratic socialist, which is nothing like big bad evil communism, and furthermore...'.

The latter puts you on the defensive and makes you seem weak, while implicitly reinforcing the idea that capitalism with some tweaks is basically fine, just owning it immediately puts your opponents on the back foot. It's kind of an adaptation of the 'attack your opponent on their strengths' strategy the media so reliably used against Corbyn - you're turning your opponent's attacks into sources of strength (ironically, something that Donald loving Trump understood)

I agree with you that it is a strong move initially, It's along the lines of what big John's 'they should be' response was to being told 'but banks and big business are afraid of you'. I don't know if you can keep that momentum though. Big John's tactic there was to then position labor more favorably than the tories in terms of brexit which hilariously had those banks and businesses taking them seriously, but the daily heil would be relentless on a self-confessed commie. Turning it around, if Lab had owned the AS smears it uh.. wouldn't have gone well at all.

Of course I don't mean do this! Though I would have liked to have seen a much stronger effort to call out obvious bad faith arguments for what they were rather than earnestly try to satisfy people who aren't even remotely interested in the issue they're spouting off on. For all of Chris Williamson's arrogance and his total lack of tact, the basic premise I think he was getting at with his 'we've been too apologetic' line was essentially correct if very poorly communicated, and would have made a strong overall party line if it was more carefully made (alongside the genuine refinement of transparent internal anti-racist disciplinary procedures).

Yeah sorry, I know you weren't meaning that at all it was just too grim not to mention. Corbyn et al's attempts to 'handle' the issue were from the right place imo- it's clear from the lab AS report that any good faith work they put into tackling AS was headed off by the neolibs. Being firmer at calling out the bullshit would have been nice but I can't see it getting them very far without also defeating the attempts of the wreckers within.

Fancy mask as a status symbol, and not only was it showing off, it actively defeats the purpose of the mask because it's not catching *your* droplets to protect others, it's pumping those out the front.

Those don't serve the purpose face coverings are meant to address though. The masks aren't to protect you, they're to protect others from you. Any open-loop respirator won't have a filter on the output so you're breathing in filtered air but breathing out the 'rona if you have it. A facemask protects everyone you meet, a respirator protects you.

The output valve is just behind the filter connector. Also the filters contain both asbestos _and_ lead for added comedy... would not recommend.
