It's a perspective thing. The most-watched cable news host on the one hand, but 4.2 million viewers represents only 1.3 per cent of Americans.

^^^ I mean, for me it's as simple as this guy suggests. I simply don't watch. I'd prefer that Tucker Carlson not even be on the air spewing his antagonistic sophistry, but free speech and stuff.

From 2018: "According to Nielsen Media Research, the top-rated markets for the show are Ft. Myers, Florida; Knoxville, Tennessee; Jacksonville, Florida; West Palm Beach, Florida; Las Vegas, Nevada; Birmingham, Alabama; Orlando, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; Greenville, South Carolina; and Buffalo, New York. Only half of these cities went for Trump in the 2016 election, but they are (with the exception of Birmingham and Atlanta) overwhelmingly white and middle class, with an average age of 36."

That detail is from a good analytical Columbia Journalism Review article on Carlson's background. The markets are likely still the same, but his audience has grown substantially since then.

Pillbug
Tucker Carlson is pretty much the prime example of “The Paradox of Tolerance” thing where his entire White Power Hour relies on the principle free speech he so desperately wants to destroy.

In short, he’s a loathsome fucker and should be taken off the air.

The argument for free speech is a practical one, but for some reason a lot of people seem to argue as if it were a moral one, which it clearly isn't.

Oh yeah, an assertion that veracity is not a standard to be imposed on him and, hey, no big deal.

This is lengthy but seems relevant. As far as Tucker himself goes, he was a dissident conservative type back in the day, but bootlicking seems to be a lot better for him.

In his early career (CNN's Crossfire) He was basically a NIMBY libertarian, almost Charlie Kirk esque in 2005. Then he got so owned by Jon Stewart that his show got cancelled like two days later:

I think that kind of broke Tucker and pushed him into going full Fascist.

Ah. Thanks. I didn't know about the Jon Stewart encounter. It's kind of like Obama making fun of Trump during the White House Correspondents' Dinner and fueling a monster. The ugly core was already there, but Stewart and Obama unwittingly provided a flame.

I would hope that it is not alien to you because otherwise you would either have to think that specific statements have no moral component or you would have to agree with the moral component of literally every statement ever.

one would hope the statement "calls to genocide the lesser peoples of the world should not be given open license" is uncontroversial.

it is only on practical grounds that the concept can be (and, to be clear, should be) defended, because on moral grounds it is trivially clear that some speech constitutes a hazard to the populace.

He was another red state shock-jock who built up an audience by reinforcing their ignorant bigotry. The model of constantly jerking off your insecure white male audience with totally not racist rhetoric regarding how supreme they are over the "others" is his forte, so of loving course he's thriving on Fox.

Yes, you're right about that. But I just cannot relate. I mean, I get the concept but I certainly have no desire to advocate for it. Just the opposite, I'd like to see it fade away, and soon!

He shouldn't be on TV. He should be societally shunned.

He is a mediocre fearmonger with no useful skills.

He exists as a monument to how white supremacist our society is, like a lesser trump.

It doesn't have anything at all to do with free speech, however, since you mentioned it.

Cucker Tarlson is a vile piece of poo poo, but it would be a mistake to think he was stupid. He won some writing awards back in the day and he’s clearly intelligent. His fascism is opportunistic rather than atavistic I think, but that doesn’t make him any less dangerous.

He’s definetly going to run for something at some point too.

Seriously, Tucker had a whole segment devoted to praising many of Warrens economic policy ideas before saying it was a shame that she thought racism and climate change were real and bad. He clearly understands the trade offs required to make right-populism viable long term. Goes after people like Bezos all the time too. The brand of fascism that he represents would be very hard for the left to combat.
