Interesting thing in this vid... what has the thicker frontal armor, an M4 Sherman or a Tiger 1?

The Sherman because the armor is angled

edit: I misrembered, the Sherman has almost as much frontal armor than the tiger because of the slope. My bad.

If you’re looking for a fascinating book about WWII outside the usual topics, The Tango War covers Latin and South America’s roles.

Huge German population in Brazil had to be kept in check, Mexican oil fueling u boats, Brazilians helping liberate Italy, Orson Welles filming a doomed project, it is top tier reading.

First phase of learning about Nazi Germany:

"Nazis were brutal efficient conquerors who briefly ruled a large portion of Europe due to their technological prowess and relentless planning."

Second phase of learning about Nazi Germany:

"Actually all the Nazis were hosed up stupid drug addicts who ran a fundamentally dysfunctional economic and political system into the ground and never did anything that wasn't a giant shambolic mess. They're funny, not scary."

Third phase of learning about Nazi Germany:

"Oh the giant clown car that is Nazi internal politics lost the war, and they were always going to lose the war, but they still managed to kill millions of innocent humans. That's sad."

Lol Douglas "Lets shoot American Veterans who just want to be paid" McArthur. I wouldn't trust him to estimate how much cake would be needed at an birthday party. Castuality ratios had been shown to be 1 American to 7 Japanese killed. The planning board, who had more people on it than one general on it even at its low estimation at half a million, and others had similar numbers. McArthur was out for blood and wanted the invasion to happen as soon as possible, probably to win himself even more glory (thats my editorializing there based on the mans personality).

A really good book I read in university was War Without Mercy: Race and the pacific war and it gets really in depth on how racism on both sides was a major factor in how both America and Japan prosecuted the war.

Soldiers rarely fight alone, so the odds are someone else is waiting to shoot you.

Fun Fact: German tank armour (with the exception of some Stugs and Tigers sucked (as in the quality of the metal). People assume that it was a late war thing, but Russian engineers were shocked at pre-war, early, and mid-war examples they captured and tested and how brittle the armour actually was.

In other news, 2075 Japanese landed on an island with 14000 American soldiers defending it. The American General in command flees for his life, and several Colonel's run away with important "financial documents", leaving the islands defenders to surrender a few days later.

I read in Unbroken (maybe not the best source) that the swift capitulation resulting from a hundred thousand civilian casualties interrupted the mass execution orders for tens of thousands of POWs, and thus although the ratio was terrible it was defensible from a military strategy perspective

Dugout Doug's not timid, he's just cautious, not afraid

They knew they could not defeat the American's by direct conflict, but they believed that the Americans were soft and if you killed enough of their soldiers, they'd sign a peace with the Japanese. Though the Americans felt that the Japanese could not compete with strapping American soldiers, and went into most of their battles over confident.

That jives with my undergrad studies on the subject. I remember a book "American Samurai" I read in a Pacific Theater class and that was the main thrust of it: the Japanese didn't doubt the industrial capacity of the U.S. but they did doubt the resolve of its soldiers. That's why you have idiotic moves like Ichiki's Charge: throwing elite and battle-hardened veterans of the war into a frontal assault against Allied machine gun positions. There was a mutual disrespect/racism on both sides, yes, but the Japanese were resolute in their stance that they were culturally, spiritually, and intellectually superior. It's also why MAGIC was so successful for the Allies: the Japanese didn't think their codes could be broken by the inferior Americans.

It wasn't until the dropping Firebombing of Tokyo (which killed more people and demoralized the populace as much as, if not more than, the atomic bombs) that Japan began considering surrender. My undergrad professor was also adamant that the Japanese surrendered only because Russia entered the war against them. The Japanese also stereotyped the Russians and absolutely did not want them invading the mainland.

He plagiarizes so thoroughly he will quote other’s obvious historical inaccuracies word for word. Also he takes nazi propaganda at face value and considers it a worthwhile source, and just general jerking off of the technological and strategic superiority of the German military (which was anything but) in general. Up to and including things like cool action stories about SS units.

I’m not saying you have to read books per se, but these topics are usually so in depth a 20 minute YouTube video is never going to be able cover with the kind of depth these subjects require.

Speaking of depth

This vid tends to come up whenever tanks are discussed, but it broadly explains the US/Soviet/German way of designing tanks in accessible language, so you don't have to be some armor grognard to understand the vid. The discussion of armor design starts at 26 minutes if you want to skip the Kursk battle itself. I tried writing some tidbits about the video, but it doesn't do it justice to post the figures out of context.
