One of my favourite war anecdotes was when USSR was advancing in Germany, a German garrison guarding some Danish island went and surrendered to the local postman because he was the only Danish government official they could find and they tried to avoid being captured by the russians.

Everyone in the world should read The Kindly Ones. It is of course a work of fiction (though brilliantly researched) but the effect on me was so profound, I am convinced in my mind that this is exactly how everything happened.
