How many computers have you owned in your lifetime? Just desktops and laptops. No phones or tablets. I’ve owned five computers. My parents also had a 486 desktop when I was a kid.

It’s really one computer that is continuously upgraded and evolving. I’m on my third case though. But it started as a Coppermine P3-> Thoroughbred AXP-> Sledgehammer Opteron -> Yorkfield C2Q-> Haswell/Devil’s Canyon Xeon. I’m waiting on DDR5 for the next major upgrade, maybe spend a stupid amount on an Epyc and run every OS simultaneously. Maybe even get real stupid and get an ASRock Rack abomination so they can all have a real passed through VGA card all to themselves. Why does Haiku OS need it’s own RTX Titan Q? Because gently caress you, that’s why. Then I can quit while I’m on top.

At one point my wife had a Pentium D 805 overclocked to 4Ghz in an eMachines case. I don’t know how it didn’t catch fire. Keeping with tradition, she’s now got a Skylake-K in the tiniest ITX case. Its got a Noctua cooler which keeps it really cool. But we soon found out that the heat has to go somewhere, so it just mercilessly dumps out heat into our room. Stupid thermodynamics.

Not counting various 68K machines picked up off the side of the road as a childe: iMac G4 AlBook G4 PowerMac G5 Core 2 Quad 6600 Hack Core i7 2600K Hack Core i7 8700 Hack Been through way more GPUs than that and only ever owned 1 ATX case but didn't do much upgrading apart from that.

So 13 or so depending on how you count. Some kind of Spectrum clone? [Pentium Laptop dad would sometimes bring from work] Pentium II dekstop [Some PIII parts i never managed to stick into the above] Pentium 4 dekstop Compaq Armada M300 laptop Core 2 Quad desktop Thinkpad X32 Thinkpad T61 Lenovo i5-2500 desktop (HTPC Now) Thinkpad T410* Thinkpad T420* Thinkpad T520 Cube Mix Plus 2-in-1 Dell Optiplex i5-3470 *technically owned but never really used myself Notice anything? No AMD garbage here Tbh I should've bought an Athlon instead of the P4 but it was a fine machine. Other than that by the time I upgraded Intel made more sense. But it's probably finally going to be Ryzen time this fall.
