facialimpediment posted:Probably going to be weird in November when everyone realizes that the "silent majority" flipped. Here's the best way I've heard that put (Weigel is always good with this The VP pick might stir things up a bit but even then there's unlikely to be *too* much drama. Worst case something like picking Kamala comes off as ham handed/tone deaf to BLM but nothing that would seriously jeopardize the campaign. Was talking to a State Dept friend last week and they were pretty discouraged that Susan Rice was under consideration, according to them she's got a history of hostile behavior towards coworkers/subordinates similar to Klobuchar.

The arms control folks have been putting it at a couple hundred tons TNT equivalent: https://mobile.twitter.com/ArmsControlWonk/status/1290722801012228096 https://mobile.twitter.com/ArmsControlWonk/status/1290795532701425664 Still a lot, and well in the range of a W54 mini-nuke equivalent (not saying it was a nuke).

facialimpediment posted:There's definitely no deal for a fifth coronavirus bill - Democrats wanted $3.4T and came down, the White House wanted $1T and won't move, and that's that. Donnie's people are convinced he can executive order unemployment benefits and an eviction moratorium extension, so this should be a fun clusterfuck. Trying to keep UI going with remaining FY20 funds is like making a down payment on your house with whatever you shake out of your couch, regardless of legality. Even with Covid-driven underruns there's only so much blood you can squeeze out of that stone. BTW don't expect to get your mail anytime soon:HUGE PUBES A PLUS posted:Here are some pictures I received this morning. They are from the post office in Kenwood, OH. Zip Code 43606. This is in the morning before people start their shift. The mail you see laying around is mail from previous days the workers didn't get processed for delivery because they can't work overtime anymore. I was told these post office processing stations should never look like this at the beginning of the shift. The shelves should be empty and no packages on the floor. HUGE PUBES A PLUS posted:the person who sent me those pictures said if your carrier is on vacation, out sick or in quarantine due to COVID will create even longer delays

What will be interesting (and scary) to see is how Russia reacts, Belarus is their land connection to Kaliningrad and after the Ukraine fiasco it's been kept pretty tight in Moscow's orbit. Putin might make a move if he thinks things may end up tilting the country westward in any way. https://twitter.com/charter_97/status/1292559808894296069 https://twitter.com/Belsat_TV/status/1292582848055119879

That's an attack but nobody will buy it who isn't an OAN watcher already. Yeah from a purely Presidential electoral standpoint Harris is a solid choice, doesn't move the needle much in either way but unlikely to be a net negative, especially with your average older Dem voter. Still feels like this is all going to end in a Ford/Carter style administration of lost opportunities and milquetoast efforts to 'return to normalcy after the long national nightmare.' Probably the only hope is if the Dems manage to retake the Senate and the Bernie/AOC types are able to exert enough pressure on the rest of the party to get some actual meaningful bills passed.

I should have put more emphasis on the second half of that sentence...the Democrats can definitely retake everything and then piss it away in two years with no meaningful achievements besides getting RBG's replacement confirmed.

If there's one silver lining to Trump, it's that a lot of things that were going on nice and quiet in the background under prior Admins got pulled out into the forefront in such a hamfisted and blatant way that people actually started to notice, USPS privatization as case in point. Of course, once we've "gone back to normal" they can resume in the background.

facialimpediment posted:One thing I've always wondered about is why W's approval ratings cratered during the economic crash in 2008. Was it just because he wasn't running for reelection? Fox News was fully up and propagandizing, Limbaugh was everywhere, etc. Bush's approval was already down in the 30s since around the 2006 Iraq Surge, but it did bottom out in the 20s during the crash. One thing that seems to have gone down the memory hole nowadays is that TARP was conceived by Bush's Treasury Dept (Paulson and Bernanke), and Bush ended up having to partner with the House Democrats after it failed the first vote in order to overcome House Republican opposition. You had 1/3rd of the House GOP vote against it in the first vote and almost 1/2 in the second, despite the fact that the economy was imploding on an hour-by-hour basis. Even before Obama wins, the internal GOP reaction to 2008 is where you start getting the true split between the Big Business Republicans who could occasionally see the writing on the wall and the frothing base.
