I caught up with reading the DnD thread about Eastern Europe, which I recommend for all to read as well due to several Belarusians being present and updating daily about the struggle. An interesting thing came out wrt some of the opposition parties coalesced around Tikhanovskaya having some deranged stuff in their political platform, which they immediately deleted when being called out on it. I can't access most of those websites, but I could find an archived version of one of those parties. http://archive.is/zabelarus.com It confirms a lot of fears expressed here wrt privatization (esp. healthcare, as it advocates transition to mixed public-private system, abolishing price controls on medical services, spending review and so on; also urban development reform isn't very promising though it does contain some good stuff on environmental protection legislation proposals; also advocates for reducing employer contributions to pension funds, letting in international capital etc.). Some of it was in Belarusian, so I can't really help with that. There's also a quickly deleted part of the program that was basically a translated and copypasted from Ukraine platform on "internal security reform", ie banning Russian influence, joining nato and so on, and that is likely what counter-campaigns in the media will focus on AND it might be what gets the Russians moving onto Belarus for real.

Anyway, to me, the Belarussian opposition really do need to be clear exactly what they want. Was the website just representing a fringe view that isn't shared by the others or does it? I would say the ambiguity isn't helping and trying to just bluff their way forward is only going to go so far. I mean it is hard for me to see how it is great for workers to put themselves on the line protest against a corrupt, abusive government only for the opposition to potentially totally undercut their interests. To clear the program that was proposed was far more radical than what Lukashenko and I don't think there is a country in the former Soviet space or eastern Europe without a centralized public health care system of some form. So we will see how Sunday turns out, but at least according to the Western media, the protests in Belarus are smaller (and anecdotally the streams I have seen back this up. In addition, pro-Lukashenko protests have become more numerous, the narrative in the Guardian seems to be this is due to a security crackdown (which hadn't stopped protesters in the beginning), but I really do think the release of that opposition website was an inflection point (so far). It is a good example of how the population of Eastern Europe/the former Soviet Union is endlessly trapped by either autocrats or weirdo shock-therapy liberal nationalists (oppressive stability versus the freedom to starve).
