I watched the first and last episodes of 1899 and it seems like they wrote themselves an excuse to do literally anything they wanted in the middle bits. My best guess as to what the middle bits might be and why they are indecipherable is just that they are all the subconscious fears, traumas, dreams, etc of each person's psyche leaking and getting mushed up in whatever crazy computer ai sim deal they have going on. I look forward to season 2 if it just becomes a spaceship show, wasn't into the titanic stuff.

Just finished Dark. I'm going to have to think about it a while. The ending is making me depressed as hell though. 😣

The couple of ideas the show picked out from the book were the only good ones imo, and the extra stuff with the clone emperors was superior to what was left I was gonna bring that up recently in the Foundation thread, but those guys seem to have a reverence for the book (compared to the show) that I can't agree with. Just really, really disappointing and packed with trope after trope. I see how it was influential, but it has not aged well at all, even grading on an originality curve for the better later space operas it's supposed to have inspired.

I read it when I was a kid and that was my take as well. A few really interesting concepts that make you go “that’s neat” and that’s about it.

Yeah I had read the Foundation books ages ago and the show is only related to it in a couple high level concepts and characters like Hari Seldon and that's basically it. Even the emperor stuff has been changed pretty drastically. I like the show though, tbh the books would be almost impossible to adapt in an interesting way as a lot of it was just people arguing in meeting rooms. (so maybe something like Shin Godzilla). The Lee Pace bits are definitely the best, then the Jared Harris and then the rest is ok.

I tried 1899 because I heard Dark was good but the concept of 1899 sounded more interesting. I did not like 1899 at all, not because I couldn't get into all the dozens of the characters, but because every single one of their stories and plot developments was so unrelentingly miserable. I did only make it three episodes so maybe there's a bunch of grim introductions to leave room for more positive or at least nuanced twists later? I would be vaguely on board with the silly mystery if everything else wasn't literal torture. I hear Dark has a better buildup or whatever, but does it build up to that kind of over the top emotional torture porn, or like, something actually interesting to watch? I have a very low torture show threshold and it didn’t get hit by Dark, it’s a bit heavy at times but it wasn’t unrelenting misery or anything. I found the ending to be pretty positive overall too despite a lot of stuff.

I liked the foundation show but it does seem like as a book it’s better as a Wikipedia dive than a read.

It’s basically just a succession of conversations by clever science men about abstract concepts. Occasionally part of it will be about how one of them foresaw what the other was going to do and had a contingency in place to outsmart him, but oh no the other guy saw that coming and planned his own contingency to outsmart the first guy. One of the sequels has a teen girl teaming up with an elderly jewish couple from like an old comedy radio series or an early sitcom. It’s oddly endearing if you find old shticky jokes comforting.

(whole season spoilers) In a few episodes a bell starts ringing and all the non-central characters line up and jump off the boat into the ocean! But don't worry, they might be back. After all, it's all a simulation on board a spaceship in the year 2099

I'm 2 episodes into 1899, didn't mind to be spoiled as I'm not that into it. I'm definitely going to be That drat Goon that constantly lets on that he has figured it all out when watching with wifey

I just finished season 2 of this wonderful milk snake show, knew it was cancelled beforehand, but powered on through. Such a shame, there was nothing quite like it. Carnivale 2.0 I thought Grandmother pulled off the latex robot bodysuit look better than Mother. I would like to be de-evolved by that milk nana There’s no more risks on tv now, lots of shows exist, but 95% of them are dogshit.
