Vice posted:

On May 1, 2016, in the middle of final exams, a young woman got a text message that would change her life forever. It included a screenshot of a pornographic video posted online, featuring her. Panicking, she quickly tried to justify what she had done. "They said it would only be in Australia," she told her friend, according to court documents. "I only did it for money."

The video spread like wildfire. Jane Doe 11—one of 22 women who sued porn production company Girls Do Porn in 2016 for coercing them to have sex on video and lying to them about how the videos would be distributed—learned from the student council president that "everyone was watching it in the library, so much so that the internet essentially crashed." The student council president also informed her that "the administration actually had to watch the video. They all congregated in a room to watch it, to I guess make sure I didn't say the university name in the video."

The following morning, Jane Doe 11 sent Michael Pratt, the owner of Girls Do Porn and currently a wanted fugitive, an email: "This is not spam but a life or death situation. Please contact me...Please. I beg of you."

In October 2019, after Michael Pratt was charged with federal sex trafficking crimes, Pornhub removed Girls Do Porn's official Pornhub channel, as well as pages promoting Girls Do Porn as "top shelf" content and a reason to pay Pornhub a subscription fee. In January, after the ruling in the civil case found Girls Do Porn owed 22 women a total of $13 million, the official GirlsDoPorn.com site was taken offline.

But even with the official site shut down and its owners in jail or on the run, the ruling has done little to stop the spread of the videos online. Even today, hundreds of Girls Do Porn videos are easy to find, especially on Pornhub, which claims to get 100 billion video views a year and more than 100 million daily visits. Searching Google for Girls Do Porn videos leads users to Pornhub, where these videos are hosted against pre-roll and banner ads that Pornhub's parent company Mindgeek profits from.

New York Post posted:

A teenage girl who had been missing for nearly a year was found by authorities in Florida after sexually explicit photos of her were found online, a report said Thursday.

Police found close to 60 pornographic photos and videos on sites such as Pornhub, Periscope and Snapchat, the Sun Sentinel reported, citing an arrest record.

Some of the videos featured a man, identified as 30-year-old Christopher Johnson, who was spotted with the missing girl in February at a 7-Eleven in Broward County, according to the report.

They wanted to be models. Mostly, college students, the young women submitted online applications that promised a “comfortable start” in the industry — only to learn that the modeling job was a pornography shoot.

Detectives from the National Centre for Combatting Organized Crime have uncovered a group of nine people who offered paid professional modeling photograph opportunities, but in reality, they manipulate them into filming pornographic videos and put online under the channel “Czech casting”.

The nine people are accused of human trafficking, sexual coercion and rape, spokesman Jaroslav Ibehej, told police on Friday.

OP,

I've been trying to pinpoint was is so lovely about this thread and your mentality generally, and I think I've nailed it down:

You haven't provided any news stories like the one just posted, or shown any initiative to change/fix/mitigate the exploitative nature of online pornography. There is likely a discussion to be had, but you're really more interested in creating a tower of moral superiority, from which you can shout down at others. You've demonstrated that the idea of exploited or trafficked women in pornography is more about creating an outlet for your misanthropic tendencies than supporting any feminist perspective. In effect, you're using it to "get off" in a completely different fashion. Your entire tone is condescending and mean-spirited. You're calling out a patriarchal and exploitative industry for your own personal gratification. This is selfish and bad, and works against those of us involved in getting women out of abusive situations.

If you're actually interested in creating more agency for women or being an "ally", I'm sure there are a ton of volunteer opportunities in your area through shelters, anti-trafficking organizations, red cross, and the like. Its probably best to find out what is nearby and aligns with your personal politics and/or religious beliefs because there is a lot of variation.

This is probably true; people managed to get by before there was a porn industry. Does recognizing that porn is unethical but still consuming it make someone a hypocrite or just morally weak? How could you increase their conviction to stop consuming?

I think that's a fairly reductive approach to things. Porn hits a "Triple A" rating for addiction (Accessible, Affordable, Anonymous). It is an extremely compelling product that can be accessed anywhere through your phone. I think telling people:

Serious answer: appeal to that person's natural narcissism. If you know it's wrong but you can't bring yourself to stop, maybe it's an addiction and affecting you badly in ways that are separate from the ethics of its production.

Real talk: supporting sex workers directly through Onlyfans allows you to bypass much of the ethical dilemma of consuming porn and nearly all of the exploitation of the industry. Is it perfect? Of course not. You should still support women who are fellow members of the working class anyway.

What distinguishes modern pornography as different beyond the medium?

While we don't have all the porn that was created we do have surviving extant copies of things that range from "chick doing two dudes at once" to "banging animals" to pederasty. The Turin Erotic Papyrus from Ancient Egypt for instance features on purpose drawn to be ugly dudes banging women with standard Egyptian beauty standards in ways both acrobatic and what we believe would be considered "transgressive" in ancient egyptian culture.

You kind of have an exponential increase in human misery with modern industrialized porn production. Stuff back then was probably painted by "greg the pervy painter" and he was just one guy that lived on a hill. Now you've got links to organized crime, forced drug addiction, human trafficking, and the like. While I'm not arguing that things were better in general for women in the ancient world, I'm just saying that supporting big porn producers is likely putting money in to the hands of pretty unseemly people.

Barudak
May 7, 2007

There is seriously a cross cultural preponderance of evidence human beings like drawing and writing about loving and that the depictions and fetishes are not particularly more extreme today except the recording medium is better.

Oh and that Egyptian gently caress scroll I mentioned? The first third is animals dressed up as people doing people chores because it also turns out people have also found that hilarious for several thousand years.

I mean, ancient to near modern prostitution was absolutely chock full of all the things you just mentioned, and historical things like erotic theater existed and were unsurprisingly deeply connected with unsavory types and fun things like kidnapping. Further, Greg the pervy painter is not getting the contract job on a temple or a nobles house unless someone is paying him which inherently implies an economy and public awareness.

Its also not the point I was making, which is merely the content of pornography now versus some mythic past is not markedly different.
