What's that? It's a new thread? Finally, it's autumn (according to the deep state :tinfoil:), the madness of Covid-19 has subsided and we can look forward to some normalcy...

...oh no. [Source: Imperial College Department of We're All hosed]

So after school closure and a half arsed lockdown we've followed that first part of the green curve pretty much exactly, and despite large protests in London against a second wave, SARS-CoV-2 has not yet issued a response.

Good lord I'm tired of it. But it doesn't go away just because you're tired of it.
Not facing up to that must be the best explanation for the protests over the weekend, because they don't make sense in any other light.

Like I could understand protesting against the lockdown, and demanding mandatory masks and hand washing and surface cleansing until there's a vaccine.
Or I could understand protesting against masking and cleansing, and demanding a full lockdown until there's a vaccine, there's enough economic trickery that we could manage it with some rationing.
I could even understand asking for the vaccine to be rushed, just to get past masking and lockdown, even if that's ill advised.

But the only way that protesting against the lockdown, and masks, and a vaccine (and a second wave 🤔) makes any sense at all is if they're all just tired of it and can't face up to that not meaning that it isn't over.

I don't think it's about not facing up to something, I think it's about them simply having genuinely lost most of their rational thought about it. There's no real way to get through to them without cutting off the firehose of insane wrong that's aimed straight at their faces basically the entire time.
We've all seen some of that poo poo though, whether we were looking for it or not. In order to be receptive enough to it you need to at some level want to believe it, and the core message is one of "you can ignore public health concerns without being a bad person, because the public health concerns are all made up by this scary (((rich))) person", which is seductive if you happen to be in the mindset that you're fed up of all this scary change, but deeply worried that maybe that makes you bad.

The bigot stuff is also critical of the status quo, but it's critical of things like Black people existing.

You can't really make comedy that isn't critical of the status quo in some way (even the arsehole stuff that can gently caress off), because otherwise there'd be no point of reference for the audience. Like even if you were doing a comedy set in First Dynasty Egypt or the Paleocene or something you'd have to pepper it with a mixture of pop-historical things that you think your audience already knows about the scenario and relatable modern day situations.

If you can only view things through broke-brained culture war memes though, that's dirty Marxist indoctrination.

As far as I'm aware there isn't much variety in how efficiently you can convert electricity to heat, because literally everything does that as a byproduct, if it's not making a noise or glowing or doing anything else useful, it's converting electricity to heat, so they're all probably the same in terms of efficiency. So your main choice is probably how much you want to spend to have it not melt or set your house on fire.

I'd probably suggest that extra insulation is the easiest option, as well as limiting the amount of space you're heating, which in my case translates to living in a blanket with a hot water bottle.

Those personal heaters he mentions in the video seem good for low wattage heating.

He does raise a valid point about thermostat controls too, the heater is always going to be hotter than the room, so a thermostat on the heater body, whether it's a fine tuned digital one or a simple bimetallic strip will always shut off too soon. You want a thermostat away from the heater. Something like this.

re: incandescent lights, I remember during winter we'd put the big light on in the bedroom an hour before bed and it made a significant difference, especially in the single glazing days. A 40W bulb on all the time is enough to keep water from freezing in a shed too (depends on the type obviously, but just as a general observation). Even older, more terrible sources of light are even better heaters, I had a big Aladdin oil lamp in the front room when I first moved in here and the boiler was terrible.

Everything they make better in winter they'd make worse in summer though.

And he was spot on in that the technology was originally being designed (or at least theorized and written about) by white, male. So obviously he was highlighting how it would end up there wouldn't be non-white men or women in this space.
It's weird because Leary was weird, in the same way that Giger would probably have the internet as mechanical dicks.

It's funny that Leary committed the exact same failure of imagination though, his big idea was "if everyone did psychedelic drugs then we'd all tune in and there'd be a lot less problems and we'd be more connected." Which suffers from a white guy standpoint issue, because everyone from Ernst Jόnger to Atomwaffen did a ton of psychedelics and it didn't stop any of them being racist fucksticks.

Maybe he recognized some of his own failure of understanding human nature in the MIT book.

The failures of others we hate the most are often reflections of our own failings.

They both thought that LSD/DMT/Psilocybin were these god-molecules that would turn you into an enlightened communist who had only love for their fellow man, which intrigued one and terrified the others.

But at the end of the day they were all just interesting chemicals that can have effects on perception and/or make you trip balls, and do seem to have some fascinating uses in an appropriate psychological setting, but they won't change human nature and they won't make a Nazi not Nazi if they just do them surrounded by other Nazis.
