Tony Tango. Years ago in CineD a guy who registered seemingly to promote his own film created a thread about Tony Tango, an upcoming movie he was starring in where the entire joke was that he was fat but he could dance and everyone thought he was sexy.

The fact that it was a garbage movie and he immediately started rolling with the punches when everyone started making fun of him for it was pretty obvious but some of the weirder details were:

-he had a shockingly conventionally attractive wife who was a model and he was getting his Everquest guild to promote the movie in exchange for posting increasingly exposed pictures of her tits on their forum for every milestone the trailer hit.

-he had a starring role in an expensive Chinese blockbuster called Empires of the Deep seemingly entirely because he had scuba diving training so he could play the wacky fat guy sidekick in a movie set largely underwater. To this day the film is still unreleased.

-he was genuinely convinced that Nick Frost had ripped him off because he also had a movie about a fat guy who was good at dancing coming out, even though many people pointed out that this was just more proof that his idea wasn't interesting or original in any way.

The demon rush thread was great.

The guy is still making games twelve years later, he's moved from 2d to 3d but they're still in that really amateurish style and still fixated on taking place in Canada. Somehow he got onto Playstation's marketplace and a ton of youtubers have mocked his games so he's kind of (in)famous now in the same way that people like Mdickie are.

There's also a dude who materializes any time anything involving Jared Leto is even mentioned in passing swearing that any day now he's going to get #MeToo'd because in highschool a friend of a friend told him that she had slept with him after a show once. People using #MeToo to try and legitimize their pathogical hatred of celebrities after the fact is one of the weirdest phenomenons to come out of the whole thing and, much like Benghazi, it ain't going away anytime soon.

Also have a fond memory of a thread from the tail end of the era of gbs superstars posting.

The month after GBS 2.0 started when the guy who would periodically do in-character roleplaying threads about being an epic badass paranormal investigator rolled up with a new thread and was immediately shut down by everyone going "what the gently caress are you doing, this is cringe" was like the ending of Chinatown in terms of seeing someone just wholly and utterly have their soul destroyed right in front of you in the span of moments.

I remember reading Duke Nukem Forever thread, despite not having an account yet. Observing the consesus going from hype through 5 stages of grief was a sobering experience. The game was poo poo, too.

The thread was recently pulled out of the memory hole and goldmined to preserve it for all time, it's even better than you remember.

Especially now that imgur is getting so bad and probably going to die itself.

People have been saying this for like a decade but them deciding to focus on being their own community site is actually pretty much the only reason they've been able to have any kind of income and remain active. Just because you personally feel slighted at having to make an extra click to upload infinite images forever for free doesn't mean the site is going to die from your negative vibes.

I can't remember the exact thread it was in but years ago some goon was posting about his time working as a repo man for one of those predatory rent-to-own stores and he regaled everyone with this one time that he was taking away some little kid's bed. The exchange was something like the kid going "I need that bed to sleep" and the goon going "No, you need your mom to pay her bills :smuggo:" and was presented as some cool takedown of the dumb lazy poors trying to hide behind their kids and not just the banality of evil and man's inhumanity to man.

When I see all these stories about families getting evicted in the middle of a pandemic and hear people wondering what kind of person could do something like that I think back to that goon, and I wonder if as the economy crumbled and his body grew older and less able to do that kind of work he himself ever wound up on the receiving end of the work he took such glee in.

Some guy posted a CYOA with kind of creepy, pedophilic overtones

It was an illustrated fantasy adventure CYOA starring a boy and a girl and at one point one of the choices was for the boy to try and give the girl a kiss. Also when people datamined the art files on his image host they found a series of figure drawings of naked adult women that didn't have pubic hair, which some people took as proof that he must be a pedophile and is also why the mod challenge was based on shaving off your body hair.

I’ve thought about making a new griefing thread a few times but I don’t have any stories even close to some of the all-time greats that were in there. Games now are a lot harder to grief in now, too.

The idea of a bunch of middle-aged men trying to relive their glory days of spending hours trying to make children cry in video games only to completely bounce off when the young adults who grew up having racial slurs screamed at them over Xbox Live and Twitch chats telling them to kill themselves are completely unfazed by them sounds like an Always Sunny episode.
