Yup. One of the Nationals MPs is reportedly still going to sit on the crossbench, taking the NSW government majority down to one. Some change, but not much.

There's mention of "concessions" that the Nationals are going to get, whatever they might be.

Not so much ACT as a hotspot, rather the idiots that catch a flight from NSW, then tranship in the ACT and fly into QLD.

Using a water pistol and disguises including fake moustaches and sunglasses, McCarty wrote his demands for cash on withdrawal slips handed to tellers.

Moral of the story is not to get caught for fraud, looks like.

Afterwards? Not great, I'd say. Labor haven't exactly covered themselves in roses, but they've repelled all furriners from invading our pristine land (read those dodgies from NSW and Victoria). There's been no major outbreak here, and there haven't been too many ministers having to resign.

APS fully expect to have to manage unrest in Australia and it is the politicians of both sides jobs to provide the resources and to sell it to the Australian population. Similarly why the drive for normalisation of army use for civilian control (ostensibly for covid control but despite public messaging, diggers trained to shoot people are not any better than ex airline staff at quarantine, a soldier with guaranteed employment dragged down from his/her QLD base does not have any more fucks to give about being near diseased people than a local employed to protect their community).

That's why QLD ALP is doing something that you think would have been anathema post Fitzgerald and re-enforcing the police empire which historically has marched towards the LNP.

Lol if you think that Reservists were called in because they're trained to shoot people. They were called in because it was cheaper and quicker to get bodies on the ground using reservists than doing anything commercially.

y'all can't read.

quote:

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) will appeal the downgrading of the sentence for an officer who leaked the home address of his friend's ex-wife from the QPS database

QPS thinks community service for rummaging around in their databases isn't harsh enough a penalty, so they're appealing against the officer's successful appeal.

I think this is most likely and they think it is close enough to be worth putting in the effort.

To be honest I thought the ALP would be a shoo in for QLD because;
~ Covid has not really impacted QLD to the same degree as other states and the government has loosened up internal travel and freedoms cautiously but fairly actively. Crises that aren't completely mishandled generally favour the incumbent.
~ Keeping out other states - always a popular move to keep out "others".
~ Federal is Lib/Nat and that's not going anywhere soon by the looks and Australians generally seem to like having one of each in federal / state.
~ ALP QLD doesn't seem to have had recent major stuff ups - parties get voted out, generally, not oppositions getting voted in.
~ The Nat opposition does not seem to be incompetent but not exciting either.
~There has been plenty of news in 2020 to be bored of the status quo and wanting to change things up just because.

Against that is that ALP has had what 25 or something years in government out of the last 30? Maybe also there is some mud sticking against ALP from all that is being flung against Andrews for being taking the strongest actions on Covid with the worst result nationally. I would not have thought it would be too much of an impact so because polls are quite often completely wrong these days, are we actually looking at a comfortable ALP victory there?

The deputy premier resigned in may this year because of an ICAC investigation - https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-10/queensland-premier-annastacia-palaszczuk-responds-to-jackie-trad/12231616

this isnt australian specific so i dont know if its significantly different there, but most stuff ive been reading kind of point at a 2 week lag time for finding out whether preventative measures have been having an effect, like you gotta wait 2 weeks to see whether number go up or number go down

is that also true for aus covid tracking? what does a 3 day soft lockdown mean, in that context? you lockdown for 3 days and then a week later count the number of self-reported covid infections, and say either "yes, 3 days seems to have been ok" or "no, it turns out we really should have done more, and now we're a week or two behind where we would have liked to have known that" ?

it feels like you might as well just implement micro-lockdowns, like for eg every tuesday between 7 and 10pm at gladys' favourite restaurant. max 5 customers total, all at the same table, one waiter per person, no reporters

Australian contact tracing is now pretty good in all of the states, and NSW is known for being very good at this with respect to COVID.

The idea is that a 3 day soft lockdown will give contact tracing the time to sort out where this infection is coming from and who has it. At that point more targeted measures can be enacted.

I don't necessarily know that it's going to work though. We'll all let you know in 3 days how it's gone.
