"The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there." BYOB today is a place to chill. A place of inclusivity, friendship, and open to all. This has not always been the case; in the early days, the white-hot promordial soup that erupted as FYAD: Casual Encounters and then coalesced within weeks into BYOB was filled with cliques, crews, and an internal civil war. The forum was divided between those who thought BYOB should be a place to 'chillax' and those who felt it should be a place to be funny; the former deemed the latter to be 'unbyob'. A very VERY annoying thing people used to say was 'fyad is for being funny, byob is for having fun' Anyway, I feel a right tit typing this up but history is important, and we should be careful not to judge the past through the gaze of the present. For some background, forums user Midget Porn! had written a 'BYOB Reggae'; this was well received by Glomp Crew et al., but felt to be embarrassingly unironic by others; if 'cringe' had been an adjective then, it would have been used. Things came to a head when forums poster Bick decided that he had had enough: Bick, who has been lost, was famous for being a bit of a hottie: and for his Bic pen mascot avatars, which eventually became an emote: In the thread he expressed his opinion of the reggae: (through the thread, look at the timestamps. MARVEL at the speed of the olden days) Not something you would see these days, but the world was a different place. Midget Porn! herself soon turned up to give her opinion: Then the only mod online turned up, Occupy Japan. I think he would be an IK in current yobterminology soon other posters turned up to give their opinion on the song vinyld00d felt that the identity of the writer would affect his feelings, and Friggle turned up as the first defender Fidel Castronaut was ambivalent, and Occupy Japan doubled down, comparing MP! to two other terrible legends of BYOB At this point MP! made the dangerous about turn of calling the whole thing a joke Occupy Japan, at this point far too involved in the situation for his modly duties, fired back then the fakeposting began Friggle, still in defence mode, is upset that effort always gets shot down others can't believe what he is saying ii oh el's hot take on moderating styles at this point the sharks had smelled blood, and it became an all-out trollfest Bick was orgasmic at this revelation from OJ, and MP! made the dangerous mistake of calling his bluff Friggle with searching questions of 'yobdentity Friggle with a theory for the hate, and badonkagonk with hate for all a rookie mistake here; never admit anything Here Midget Porn! wishes for the death of Occupy Japan Friggle wishes for law and order from the bong man: Anyway, the yob was once a violent place. Occupy Japan was eventually de-modded, drifted away from BYOB, and some years later Midget Porn! got her wish as he passed away and went to the great goldmine in the sky. I don't know why I posted this, maybe it is all common knowledge. Just don't want it to 'tears in ran' itself. I honestly don't know if the BYOB reggae is still part of the lore, but if you haven't heard it you can do so here; https://www.indiesound.com/track/89356 If you want to read the original thread, it can be found here: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2587610&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1 edit: I almost deleted this after writing it because I loving hate people writing internet history sincerely, especially goons, but it's so odd that I can look back on conversations I watched in real time when I was high school age, and see them perfectly preserved |

i heard that the OG byob was super insular, but this sheds light on a lot of the culture back then. when i started posting, all i knew was it was outwardly a welcoming chill place but once you actually got into threads it was basically fyad (but sometimes not?). then a lot of stuff happened, and it was annihilated and resurrected repeatedly for years. forums cancer appeared, then byob and other fyad-lites were deleted for a long time. When this iteration of BYOB was launched to a lot of fanfare, a lot of the guidelines in the rules thread here were created so that that kind of posting clique stuff doesn't happen again. idk if its possible to let MP! know but byob reggae is still played constantly lol. i usually see this version linked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms_S3sd5JzU

thanks, i'm glad if even one or two people take something from this early byob could be insular and cliquey, but these groups mostly kept to each others' threads, so that if you just wanted to glomp you could, and if you mostly wanted to practice cutting wit, you could do that two, but thr groups did collide a lot. at the very beginning nobody knew what they were supposed to be doing so you really could just jump in, but after a year or so when a subculture had developed it could be intimidating at first; you didn't know anyone and they didn't know you, and while a lot of people would be welcoming not everyone would in the goldmine you can see threads a day or so apart that have almost no mutual posters edit: i really hate seeing that I've typed this. what a goon. anyway, this is all subjective, and im sure a contemporary could come in and demolish my take on events

And Jinh, the whole cliques think wasn't all bad, and you have to see it in the context of the time. As you know, back then people weren't generally on facebook(I wasn't) and you parents definitely weren't, back then the idea of being your real self with your real name online was less common, and it seemed more normal to speak to total internet strangers, in a way. I ended up chatting with a lot of byobers on AIM, and if you were current AIM buddies with someone, you would tend to post in their thread when you saw one, because you knew that guy! I had a lot of fun talking to random American and Australian yobbers, South African and all kinds of Europeans too. Once a few of us decided to become the 'BYOBeatles', this was my avatar from that time: Heh, look at him go! Anyway, bad stuff came with cliques but it was a lot of fun posting in little teams of friends sometimes. ~you take the good with the bad yin and yang 'yob and 'yad~

this was fascinating cause i wasn't posting in byob yet at the time of the song, so it's always been an artifact of byoblore to me i am still too cowardly to go and try and find my old posts especially because the tail end of them were made during a mental health bipolar mania emergence crisis, and the ones before that i was usually very extremely stoned late at night and or drinking in university so they are likely really unfunny but WHO KNOWS (not me i'm craven)

Oh and also, in case the references to Shiv don't mame sense to anyone, there used to be a mod of BYOB named shivadas whose avatar was a man with an eye for a head. He sold bongs and got banned when people bought bongs from in SA Mart, but never received them. |
