I don't know if they pulled off the stunt you described, but it sounds like something they would do, and a trip to web.archive.org might solve the mystery. I loved Cockeyed! "How Much Is Inside?" was my favorite I think, but the elaborate costumes Rob Cockerham made. I looked him up a while ago and he's still updating the site, which is wonderful. AND he is the fake sculpture guy!
