Mykroft posted:Small procedure question here that maybe is more appropriate for USPOL - what's to stop Mitch from filibustering any bills that come up and effectively blocking everything that way? Is the difference that R senators are more accountable for not helping to break it vs. them having no opportunity to say anything either way because it just never came up? The Democrats can set up a cloture vote and force rank and file republicans to vote in support of a filibuster against (bill people want). As majority leader, Mitch was able to protect his members from unpopular votes. He can't do that anymore.

Correct, absent filibuster reform most things will be DOA in the senate without the support of 10 republicans. But, as mentioned above, you can force them to vote against cloture, and you can use procedural mechanisms like reconciliation to make a small number of bills unfilibusterable. And judicial nominees are not filibusterable. Also, it's possible there might be momentum for filibuster reform after months of getting nothing done this year: you can do things like go back to a "talking filibuster" that might intuitively sound good and popular to the American populace (people remember Mr. Smith Goes To Washington and think the filibuster is still like that, even though it isn't) and actually would make it much harder to do constantly. (not saying anyone's secretly champing at the bit to kill the filibuster, but it's possible the political landscape changes with enough gridlock that we can blame on republicans in the coming months)

She knows she could have just kept the "moderate Republican whisperer" grift going with gullible, well-meaning doofuses like Michael Ian Black (who tbf I do like as a comedian), but no - she took the gig as the youngish racist white lady on The View, and now she's going to be pigeonholed for it.
