A free market in electricity might make some sense if they were offering some different form of electricity. Edison is offering 120V DC, but Westinghouse is offering 240V AC, but Duracell is offering 1.5V DC, who won? You decide!

500 brokers offering the exact same poo poo from the exact same grid via a variety of different financial schemes makes no sense though.

You've got to create the illusion of choice or people might realise you're just another landlord.

When I was switching suppliers after moving to my new flat, uSwitch asked me what tariff I was currently on and there were like fifty different ones just from British gas lol

Decided to go for SSE because they had the cheapest looking dual gas/electricity thing without a smart meter, because the only tangible benefit they can offer is me only having to remember to pay one gas/electricity landlord, and also my landlord's landlord who owns the building has some clause in the contract about changing utilities infrastructure, and I couldn't be bothered to ask for permission. Plus, they're all in a communal cupboard and no one else has one so I thought they might say no.

Then I started getting spam calls, like multiple times a day. Googled the number and it's SSE trying to upgrade me to a smart meter, so I answered and spent about ten minutes trying to explain to the guy that I didn't really want to make an appointment until I had checked whether I'm allowed a smart meter, before just giving up and hanging up the call.

plus if I stay here next year I will have absolutely no hesitation about swapping supplier again, and sounds like the smart meter would make that a faff

also the internet landlords have decided that there's absolutely no way they can use the existing internet line so I have to ask my landlord and probably my landlord's landlord for permission to drill an unspecified number of holes in order to get a new one installed if I ever want to have wired internet

it's loving landlords all the way down

maybe but if I'm not particularly confident that the general public will suddenly start correctly identifying the causes of poo poo that's going wrong on the 1st of January

look at what's happened with covid and bojo is still polling 40+%

I don't think anyone's made a home thermal printer since the 8-bit days. They get used for till receipts and stuff because of the outright speed of printing and ease of maintenance (no ink/toner to replace, just top up the paper, only moving part is the paper feed) - I'm 99.9% certain that the actual price per page is considerably higher than conventional inkjet/laser.

Also don't forget that thermal paper is not even vaguely archival - even in absolutely perfect conditions it only lasts a couple of years at most. Most businesses that are printing things out are doing it because they need it for record-keeping processes.

you can get longer lasting stuff (like 20+ years just from a quick google) but I presume its more expensive, and I imagine that is still heavily dependent on storage conditions

the company I used to work for sold lots of stuff to the pharma industry and most of that had thermal printers because it's really old/cheap (once something is validated, good luck getting them to drop it even if it's completely outdated/illogical), and they need the records to be legible for however many years afterwards for the regulators

think they're trying to move to impact printers though

when it was just the one tweet about patel I wasn't entirely sure, because although it's very plausible it's just a tweet with no source, but if the right-wing press decide that's where they want to go next then it's pretty much inevitable at this point

the pandemic worldwide generally has had a pro-incumbent effect, regardless of a left- or right-leaning government in power; Johnson's government not seeing such a bounce and instead steadily falling as the Brexit honeymoon wore off is about the extent of its polling penalty for its mismanagement

but, yes, not shocking that 1) most people respond to a sense of crisis by preferring safety, and conversely support redistributive or reformative politics more when they feel wealthy and safe, not the converse, and likewise that 2) a minority of people have the opposite moral instincts, view the world in exploitation/injustice moral frame, and they're all congregating ITT. And find the former group deeply alien/repulsive/etc.

I'm not sure it's accurate to characterise them as preferring safety, if they're supporting the governments that are very demonstrably failing to keep them safe?

Sir Keir went onto defend his decision to serve in the Shadow Cabinet under Mr Corbyn.

He said: “I thought it was better to stay and try and change things; others thought it was better to leave.

“I thought it was better to make the arguments that needed to be made in the Shadow Cabinet.

“I took the view that if you are in a party you stay in and fight for change; other people took a different view.”

He added: “I am very conscious now that as leader of the Labour Party, it falls to me to bring about that change.”
