People who were in those exposure areas should definitely not. But everyone else shouldn't have to abide by any restrictions just because there's one case in the city.

I feel like Melbourne peeps have COVID PTSD or something. You can't enforce Stage 4 lockdown for a few cases, especially when the contact tracing is meant to be up to scratch now.

We’ve got hotspots now listed going back to the 21st, NSW has given us the gift of almost two weeks of potential undetected community transmission leading into New Years Eve you illiterate baboon

Artificial kid probably works in public service (or more accurately a big consulting firm that services the public service) and has had their brain irrevocably broken by having to write regulatory impact statements. Having to write up stuff like what dollar value is too much to pay to prevent a child drowning in their backyard pool and getting permanent brain damage will do that to you.

$3.5m for the value of statistical life (VSL) and $151 000 for the value of statistical life year (VSLY) (both of these are measured in 2007 dollars). Using CPI data to express these estimates in 2014 dollars gives a VSL of $4.2 million, and a VSLY of $182,000.

How much should we be willing to pay to prevent someone from catching the virus and surviving it but being ill for months and suffering long-term health issues which aren't fully understood?

What is the economic value of people not being too afraid to leave the house and participate in the economy or seek treatment for their pre-existing or other medical conditions?
Many regulations have the benefit of reducing the risk of injury, disease or disability. One method to value these benefits is to adjust the value of statistical life year (which could be interpreted as the value of a year of life free of injury, disease and disability) by a factor that accounts for the type of injury, disease or disability. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has published disability weights for most diseases and injuries that can be used to adjust the VSLY (Mathers et al 1999, pp. 186-202). As an example, an amputated foot has a disability weight of 0.3, which equates to 30% of a VSLY or $54,600 per year (0.3*$182 000) when measured in 2014 dollars.

Some relevant weights
Mild asthma - 0.01-0.05
Severe asthma - 0.3-0.4
Severe chronic bronchitis or emphysema - 0.5-0.65

It’s also completely disingenuous to compare a mask mandate with things like colonoscopy screening because the former is a cost which would not otherwise be available for an alternative public health intervention (apart from however many masks you decide to make freely available to people)

i understand the incredulity about a liberal member saying this when the party has been actively trying to incite race wars since forever. but frydenburg isn't one of the main drivers of racial hatred - his crime is deliberately ignoring it, which has more to do with the fragility of his position than his own personal views. and in this case he's telling the truth, anti-semitism and holocaust denial are on the rise in australia and it's his duty to use his position to call attention to that.

i don't like the right wing of any country using anti-semitism as a cudgel against their enemies or to gloss over their own sins, especially as most of them hate the jews just as much as they hate everybody else, they just know better than to say it too loudly. but i also don't like feeling like a frog in a slowly boiling pot of bigotry. i wish frydenburg would talk about all the other forms of racism as freely as he talks about anti-semitism, rather than that he would talk about anti-semitism as little as he does everything else.

Frydenburg shouldnt get to have this excuse trotted out on his behalf when explicitly talking about how you need to actively confront anti-semitism even if it is difficult or inconvenient to do so.

I've heard policy wonks on Twitter say the feds don't actually have the staffing capacity to do it; the entirety of the 800 or 900 ADF medical staff are already working in it, and regardless of who's actually "in charge" of it, it would still be personnel from state-based health departments and hospitals actually running the program and working in the hotels.

I mean the State Governments also don't have normal operating capacity to run a quarantine program for every person entering the country, but they ramped up and brought additional people in or transferred them from other responsibilities?

Electric Wrigglies posted:

From what I can work out, the efficacy being talked about when the different percentages are being thrown around is for no covid symptoms. The Pfizer one coming out with 90%+ no symptoms is beyond expectations as the original expectation was for vaccines to come out with >75% reduction in significant symptoms (Evidently all covid vaccines to date are having close to 100% survival effectiveness once sufficient time has passed). The data about AZ with the significantly reduced efficacy of no symptom on the SA variant does not mean that it will fall short on reducing significant symptoms (including debilitation and death). The data is not sufficient yet to evaluate that but it seems that the confidence is high that the AZ will still provide the protection as originally targeted or better.

Australia continuing as is until everyone has been vaccinated with a vaccine of their choice (even if it means vaccinating people twice) implies either Aus is willing to maintain current mitigations and sporadic lockdowns until 2022-24 (basically when I expect vaccines to get around to developing countries in sufficient quantity) or that those same countries should have their vaccinations bumped back to allow Australians to both start easing up restrictions sooner and get their choice of vaccine.

I think it is far more likely that vaccinations in Aus have been slower in part due to Australia letting the likes of Israel, the US and EU to get priority on vaccines (they need it more) and that once the vulnerable populations of Australia have been vaccinated then mitigations can and will start to be eased up. It makes sense that once the vulnerable populations are not likely to die or become debilitated, Australia will both ease up mitigations and hopefully prioritise vulnerable populations of other countries.

This is some fuckin League of Nations level naivety lol
