Happy new year, thread. Feels like the bar to clear is very low but I hope your 2021 is better :)

lots of people simply cannot and will never accept that the government isn’t legitimately doing its best,

Really want to ask one of these people "how would it look different if, hypothetically, the government were half-arsing it"

The gimmick flavours are nothing you can't do at home, those Monin syrup pumps are buyable online and they last forever. You can go down a rabbit hole of expense with coffee paraphernalia, especially with espresso machines but you can get really good coffee out of a bog standard cheapo french press.

The one thing I did spend a bit of money on in the day was a grinder for like 50 quid or something cos freshly ground beans just taste and smell so much better. I'm still missing plonking myself in a corner of a Costa and spending a few hours working but mostly not for the coffee.

Nah loads of people will go on about The One True Way To Make Delicious Coffee even though it's all disgusting without adding a ton of sugar.

See I really thought that for years. But we had a coffee geek locked down with us on the first lockdown, and he did this method...

No but seriously, it was a 10th-of-a-gram accurate, stopwatch-timed, pour over technique that used up about twice as much coffee as normal and after the second or third go (while he was adjusting to the hardness of our water) it suddenly tasted amazing, just black and unsweetened. It was amazing, I'm a complete sugar and oat milk queen usually.

Haven't made it since he moved out though, who in gods name has the time.

Aye on item 1

Not that I think I'm here enough for my vote to count for much, but I don't want not saying it to count against either

It's very telling that the tories and the libs will roundly mock socialism with jibes about the Soviet Union and make out like it's an idea that's had its time and it's chance and yet Thatcherism is apparently ageless.

I thought building regs say you have to have a minimum of 2 doors between toilets and kitchens?

Edit: huh, that's been relaxed aparently. Dysentry for all!

Aggressive TERFdom among the media class does seem to be a singularly British pathology.

They've been melting down on Twitter about that executive order Biden has signed without a moment of hesitation, how it will inevitably cost the Democrats the House etc. They don't seem to get that Americans just aren't psychotically opposed to the idea of trans rights in the way they are.

I don't know if it's a good thing psychologically but I'm actually in the place where I see a trending topic like that now and my first thought is "oh that's nice, he must have come out in support of trans people".

Like, I'm pretty sure the aim of the hashtag is to upset us while we're minding our own on twitter dot com but those nerves got cauterised some time ago and it has the exact opposite effect.

I only drink now but I've used drugs recreationally when I was younger, and whatever anyone wants to put in their body as long as it's a free choice, it's all cool, you do you.

But I've been around people that have coke habits and I've never seen anything turn someone into the absolute worst version of themselves like that can. It's like an amplifier for everything I hate about the dark recesses of the soul and people's unchecked impulses when they're let loose. I say that having grown up with an alcoholic dad, but at least alcohol dulls as it effects people. Everyone I've known who did coke had a sharp, lucid malevolence come out of them that I found completely terrifying and I would never ever touch it in a million years.

Same, got my text to book through today. I'm in group 4 (clinically vulnerable), if anyone wants to guage the progress. No idea what flavour of jab it is.
