What king of tableware should I get? I need small and large plates and bowls, plug place mats. I have a ton of Vignelli designed Heller melamine pieces -- I love the look, and I think they're absolutely perfect, except I'm trying to move away from plastic.

Suggestions? Bright solid colors and simple forms preferred, no white or black, although I'm open to whatever would look good with this set.

Iittala's Teema when they're doing bright colours (like now there's a nice red, yellow, and blue).

It's good to have dishes that are the same shape, even if the pattern is different, because they'll fit much better in a dishwasher. (If you could have a dishwasher and don't, you're literally killing the planet, thanks a lot.) Also, of course, they stack well in the cupboard.

I have so much cabinet and cupboard space in the kitchen that I'm able to keep just the fire extinguisher (in the shape of a duck, I forget the designer) and the electric kettle (which I use every day) on the counters. The coffee machine and toaster are on an an open shelf between cabinets on the opposite wall, above the microwave oven, because I don't have anything else to put there. I think it's where the refrigerator used to be, and that's why there's an electric outlet, and no door.

anyone have recommendations for those pullout cabinet organizers? I have the usual 90s cabinetry, drawers are about 9.75" (let's say 9.5" usable) and cabinet doors are just under a foot (11.75" max, 11.5" usable?).

In particular I need something to handle tupperware organizing and similar, those turn into a complete mess over time no matter how careful I am. The pullout shelf could have something fixed that just sits inside, but I'd like something with pull-out rails for the bottom (getting down on my knees while I clean it up means it doesn't get done) and there's also the corner ones where it'd be nice to have a multi-stage pullout.

I have been reading the various house/interior/cabinet -related threads on the Something Awful forums and I can say with certainly the only sane option for what I'm looking at there is to install a toilet seat in it.

I was assuming the shoes one keeps by the door are shoes worn at least semi-regularly.

Does anyone have experience with importing furniture/lamps to the US? I really want the biggest and baddest Martinelli Luce Pipistrello lamp. The price at the euro retailer below is $1600+$400 shipping which doesn’t seem bad, but considering this sells at US retailers for $4000, I’m wondering if I’m missing some part of the price equation. I don’t know what import duties will be like. And I don’t know what kind of step up transformer I’ll need.

https://royaldesign.com/us/pipistrello-large-table-lamp

If US customs doesn't have a calculator on their website where you punch in
a) what you're importing (chosen from a list)
b) where from
c) at what cost
and it just gives you a number, then I'm not surprised but slightly disappointed.

Not that I can find. Maybe I’m not searching for the right thing, but the federal code for determining duties seems extremely complicated. I guess I will just try to message the retailer and see if they have an estimate of what to expect.

I tried to find it the other day, just out of curiosity, and I think there isn't one. Because why use computre for computing that would be silly.

Meanwhile whenever I import something I get an e-mail with a link to both the customs and tax calculator (where I can also pay directly) and the mail thingy that I have to also pay.

e: Obviously I can use the calculator beforehand, too, to see if it's worth it to import something.

And buying straight from a private person is always an absolute poo poo-show for other reasons.

Now inheriting furniture from dead relatives? That's the ticket!
