I love all his stuff and am.trying to do academic stuff on him If you like Gonzo journalism: the Atlas or Rainbow Stories or Poor People If you like historical fiction: Europe Central (WW2) or Father's and Crows (New France Colonialism) If you like both: Rifles ( Inuit relocation) My bias is Canadian with Rifles and Father's and Crows , his American historical fiction is more experimental, one book is mainly dialogue without speakers being named amd another is written in 17th century prose (Argyle the actual true story of Pocahontas, which is pretty great) He also writes a lot of fiction about sex workers which some might find cringe cause he's a wealthy educated john writing for some pretty underrepresented folks. To be honest I love him but he's a bit of an unethical creep, he obviously fucks a lot of his "journalistic subjects" who are sex workers or have drug problems . He fetishizes escorts a lot, it actually made me sad that his daughter died of alcoholism , cause he's made some asides about how his daughter and wife dislike that side of him. I'm not tradcore but what does it do when your dads day job is doing heroin with an interview subject that hangs herself? Chaos being this weird slightly on the fringes book kind of worked in its favor, can’t think of anything rerouting its “credibility” more than being turned into a netflix documentary apart from it making Obama’s yearly book recommendations list. But I’m also happy for the author since he deserves a windfall after that entire ordeal

So I stayed at Colonia Dignidad with a friend while he was visiting Chile earlier this year - he's a fellow TrueAnon listener so he knew the deal. We rented a car from Santiago and drove through the Andes to stay two nights at "Villa Baveria." It's a mountain resort now that is "German-themed" and they have a little museum that references the entire Nazi-cult part of the place's history as just the "Years of Strife." Overall, it was full of very old German people and some younger German-Chileans from after they were allowed to like venture outside of the compound, have relationships, etc. Everybody was super excited when they found out my friend spoke even just elementary German and talked to him each time with a certain level of glee. Also still surrounded by barbed-wire fences.
