I have a few questions JeffreyofYOSPOS:

  • What do you mean by development costs? Do you hire other developers to develop the site?
  • Is the site gaining or losing in popularity?
  • Do you live off the site?

I'm hiring astral as a site coder and, if he ends up working full time and there's still more money, I'm open to more.

I will see to it that this place grows. I don't know what the right metric to determine growing or shrinking is, and I know that the last six months have seen some crazy poo poo and aren't representative of any sort of trend. I imagine some people are gone for good after yikesaroo, and I imagine some older posters came back upon hearing the news, so we'll just have to see how things shake out. There is room to grow this place and funny people who hate social media but don't know this place exists are out there just waiting to be recruited.

I haven't taken any money if that's what you're asking. I posted about it above in that I am willing to eventually pay myself for development work, but as of yet I have not. I don't treat forums money as my money and I never will. Ironically, if you said "on" instead of "off", I'm guilty - I don't really go to other websites and "live" on this one. :)

Thanks for the answers.

In terms of growth I remember the 200,000 poster celebration count thing was embarrassing since the site averaged at two new users a day. That's like Twitter account levels of popularity.

I've always wondered why did Lowtax give up the site? Like what was in it for him if he didn't give it up? Even if the site stopped making money completely I'd imagine he'd rather shut it down than let it continue with someone else on the helm.

200k was June 2018, it's 204,500ish now, so it's around 5 a day.

😮 The site is growing! Though maybe that could be due to an influx of people who requested to be banned but made new accounts during the Lowtax scandal.

Let's shoot for ten a day!

Jeffrey paid him for it. I believe the words he used to describe the amount was "not so big that it would change his [ie Jeffrey's] life".

Since we don't know how Jeffrey lives that could be anything, maybe he is posting on SA from a gold yacht right now.

And from the other side apparently Lowtax isn't so dumb that he'd burn the place down just from spite, and instead took what he could get. My only worry was that Lowtax would use the time bought by Jeffrey's announcement that he was buying to find a higher bidder and sell to cracked or barstool or something.

We rebelled. Offsites and discords were launching left right and center, and the users made it clear that if he didn't give up the site, we were gonna bail, the gravy train was over. Transitioning the forums to someone he knew and trusted was probably a better outcome for his ego, than seeing them die.

Jeffrey also paid for the forums, so maybe he just wanted the cash up front. who can say for sure.

I'm a naive idiot but I got an impression Lowtax considers the forums as something important to preserve even if he was exploiting them. I don't think it all started out as a huge scam even if it ended that way, I want to doubt nuking them really was on the table for rich -- but, Jeffrey had those negotiations so who knows what was thrown around. I'm guessing it was just some number to walk away and rich may have been relieved to do it. ALL just guesses.

Thanks for the responses. I guess Lowtax is lucky that this site didn't pull a ResetEra and had one main site to move to. That for a time seemed like Bread n Roses but...yeah...

God yes give me that sweet graph porn :jackbud:

Imagine if the site had graphs for:

Amount of users logged in at any given time.

Amount of lurkers logged in at any given time.

Most viewed boards of the day.

Most viewed threads of the day.

Etc.
