This is a thread for posting and discussing videos about or relating to video games. This includes but is not limited to: video essays, funny clips from gameplay, um I can't think of other genres of video game videos but I'm sure you can! Videos may be very short, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yMy7JuGpJM Or extremely long, as in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xb-DtICmPTY Suggested discussion topics: - good streamers you recommend - are video essays better than written essays? - the ideal length for a video - do podcasts count if they are hosted on youtube? (philosophical) I may or may not update this OP with recommended videos/channels/streamers Metis of the Chat Thread fucked around with this message at 02:32 on Jan 29, 2021 |

And if you are unaware, Pannenkoek still makes uncommentated videos on this channel (the commentated ones like this, while incredible, were too much work, which is understandable): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5miyvhPsWWyfTulnJ43koQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3gfgq5UnNc This one is wonderful.

Is this a good place to complain about how video game trailers don't seem to like showing actual game play? Am I just weird for wanting that?

If I had to guess, it's probably because ganeplay tends to change so much that putting it in an early trailer is just futile. A launch trailer should absolutely show gameplay though and I think they usually do?

A lot of times, big games are announced early enough that they just straight-up don't actually have finalized-looking gameplay to show. Plus, when you show a gameplay feature in a trailer, people tend to take that as a commitment, so if it gets cut later, it causes more trouble than it was probably worth. The closer to launch you get, the more likely you are to get actual gameplay trailers, and the more skeptical I get when there aren't gameplay trailers. One of the things that was so attention-grabbing about the recent Final Fantasy XVI trailer is that it was a Final Fantasy reveal trailer consisting of nothing but in-engine cutscenes and actual gameplay.

Fire Emblem Three Houses' first trailer had some gameplay, roughly split between the stuff that defines Fire Emblem and you always knew was going to be there, and new stuff All of the new stuff got changed by release

Persona 5's reveal trailer also had gameplay (with special focus on "look how stylish our menus are!" throughout). One example of a gameplay reveal I keep coming back to is Horizon Zero Dawn. It was revealed with gameplay of a fight against a Thunderjaw, one of the t-rex robots, that I assumed would be a scripted encounter in the final game because it just seemed a bit too cool to be real/freeform gameplay. It was pretty funny to rewatch that trailer after playing the game and go, nope, that's actually how the game plays and you can do all those things and more when you fight a Thunderjaw. I'd become so used to bullshit fake gameplay trailers that I refused to believe a real one until I played it myself.

The trailer for Horizon Zero Dawn at E3 2015 was the first time in an extremely long while I looked at game and just instantly went "I must play this by any means necessary." The funny thing is that many people assumed it was 100% fake at the time, and while some things were obviously dramatized for effect, they're actually showing you some great strategies for taking down a Thunderjaw! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkg5UVTsKCE
