My main Seasonal character is still wrestling with inventory management instead of questing, so I created one of those little elf characters to try lifeskills. I'm also taking the character through the MQ and I was amazed at how much I found to do in the starting region, long after I received quests to go to Heidel. I've only scratched the surface with nodes and workers, some of it is appealing, some less so.

Decided to go check out Heidel just for the heck of it, but ran into several quests along the way that distracted me, wound up back "home" making meat stews and stir-fry! I was disappointed to find out that the purified water I'd been producing does not replace mineral water in cooking recipes. Who cooks with mineral water anyway?

I got a token for a golden horse, and it goes quick but is barely controllable. Of all the things to be flummoxed by. Leaving my first horse back in the starter region for my other alts to use while I keep trying to get all the way to Heidel.

Is it bad that I give each alt a single lifeskill just so they can generate a little income while they're out in the world? So one is logging, another collecting meat, etc. The elf is doing all the heavy lifting skillwise.

I just do fishing and cooking for income generation, processing is relatively easy too. I don't do a whole lot of gathering or farming. (farming I think is fairly contribution point intensive to do any meaningful amount and not really an afk-able activity to my understanding.)
You can set a hotkey in your settings to minimize BDO to the task tray so you can let your AFK fishing or crafting go without taking up a giant amount of system resources.

On each of the quests there is a "navigate" button and you can just press "T" to auto-run on foot or your mount to the destination. (it is slightly slower than manually controlling your character to the destination.)

I think I would focus on getting one character leveled to 61 through the MQ and then figuring out which content you'd like to try from there. Whether it be sailing/pvp/lifeskilling etc. That will give you a good chunk of contribution points and energy to work with. You can also have other characters as an energy bank so to speak since they all get their own pool.

you can have workers tend your farm. this provides much less exp and special drops than doing it manually, but I was only doing farming to produce tons of fruit, onions, etc for cooking boxes.

Any advice on getting Tuvula gear up to PEN? I managed to get my main weapon to TET, but everything fell apart with enhancement and now it's back at TRI. :negative:

Should I use Cron stones? Are there ways to farm them in-game?

Can you try the coupon codes in this thread? You'll get like 500 cron stones from the heidel ball codes and those are valid until 31 July.

Otherwise I would keep a set at TET for your primary gear and then use a duplicate piece to try and PEN with.

Also, you should get quite a few if you do the season pass thing.

I want to pay for the quasi-subscription value pack but I want to make sure I understand how this game currency nonsense works. I have to buy a certain number of gamebux, and then those gamebux can be used to buy a certain number of "Pearls" which are then used to buy in-game store items like value packs. The only variable seems to be when you buy Pearls, because "bonus" Pearls are included with each item based on how many Pearls you purchase. And I expect the bonus amount is not linear, so certain Pearl amounts are probably more cost-effective than others.

As a filthy casual I'm not interested in much else in their store, but the value packs feel worthwhile.

Dr. Kayak Paddle
May 10, 2006

I think people buy the value packs only when they have things to sell on the marketplace because of the tax bonus, and you can buy like a one day pass with loyalties when you need the money.

Old moon blessing I think is for grinding heavily or raising a life skill. I only have them right now because they were from the season pass.

My gaming style requires unlimited access to the character creation tool because I cannot settle on which facial hair to use.

Unless I'm misreading it looks like there's a 60% discount on those value packs, so would be a good time to buy.

EDIT: Took me like 10 minutes to figure out how to use the pearl store coupon! :argh:

I think my biggest problem remains determining which skills and combos I can use to create a simple rotation. I don't have the brainpower for complicated rotations, but even so it's a challenge to compare skills. My usual method of sorting out DD, AoE, DoT, etc. skills is difficult with the way the skills interface shows details. I find myself letting skill points pile up because as I dig through the options I can't determine if any of them offer an advantage. "Higher" level skills that are linked to lower ones often don't seem to be an improvement, at least not from trying to compare details.

That said I enjoy this game, I just know that I am playing in a deeply unoptimized and inefficient manner. I have one character on the Seasonal server, one that is following the MQ and doing loads of lifeskills, and a third on the MQ and just doing butchering/simple alchemy. I find myself doing a little planning before I log on so I can manage the workers, gathering and crafting, moving ingredients around and the like.

Also I have like 60 of those Oasis boxes stored up. I really need to buckle down and clear all that stuff out.

I'm pretty sure you want to play a guardian then, dead simple rotation of like 4 skills; a pretty chill class for what you describe.

I would concentrate on doing the main story quest on your seasonal character as that will give you the most contribution (this will open up your ability to do more lifeskill things with workers etc.) as well as leveling rewards and if you get a character to 60-61 you'll be able to copy it over and have 2 characters somewhat ready to go.

The first character that's clicked for me is a Valkyrie. I cobbled together a little routine that's worked well with those imps that are all over the starter area. My favorite skill in the game so far is her grab, which snatches an enemy and body slams them. Love doing that to those imp wizards before they can throw a fireball at me. It's so visceral.

I think that's why I enjoy gathering so much in this game. The animations and sounds really sell it when you're chopping down a tree, or using your pick on a rock. Even the processing ones are satisfying.

I need something to do between now and when New World (had a lot of fun in beta) and/or Lost Ark launch. I played a bit in the last season and got a character up to 61 and I think my tuvala gear was in a pretty good place (I uninstalled for space so I can't check). I definitely transferred my account over to the new provider, but about a week after that happened was when I stopped playing. I never "graduated" my seasonal character, but I assume I'll still get those rewards?

Anyway, my question is, how long will it take me to get to a place where I can PVP in the first tier of node wars? That's a thing yeah? The gear cap being low on that first tier means I can at least do some PVP and not get my face melted? Can those be done at 61 with post-seasonal gear? I was thinking of rolling a Sage since I've heard that's very forgiving.

Yes, all accounts untransferred should be gone as of ~5 months ago. You would probably have to buy in again, though they sometimes run promos where the base game account is free--right now it's $1. If you wanted more cash shop stuff for whatever, you'd have to get that all again either through the cash shop or one of the more expensive packages

yeah its gone :(

To be fair though, with the season stuff my fiance (who also lost her account) was able to gear up to my level in a few weeks and my account has been around forever. I think they are even running a super special on the $200 pack for $35 which is totally worth.

Make a Seasonal character and stick to Seasonal servers. Join a guild that does whatever you wanna do asap and turn off server/group/roleplay/system chat (General is kind of ok because it's local to where you are in-game).

Yeah just make a new season character. You will get a ton of free stuff, easy great gear, and will hit 61 relatively quickly. Then you can use a timepiece to get a second level 61. It’s awesome.

I’ve been trying to get into this game for years and finally was able to have it click for me this season. It’s a really cool game and they’ve added so much QOL stuff over the years.

I heard the character creator was good so I gave it a shot on game pass last night. Good god that user created style album thing is so porny it’s hilarious. Unfortunately I couldn’t get any of them to apply to my character, it failed every time. After a bunch of attempts the button had a price on it but I don’t think I have any of whatever currency it is so I gave up and played Snowrunner.

I’ll give it another shot once I’m not too tired to manually set my own hair length in a variety of ways, it looks like fun.

I recently tried this out again as I had it due to a poor purchase decision shortly after release but hadn't touched it since that time. Primarily because I'd heard it was a lot better now and had smoothed over a lot of the Asian Grinder problems. Which is a little bit true and a whole lot of bullshit, so I figured I'd post this here for anyone else who might believe the it's different lines. TLDR version, it's still pure Asian grinder MMO but loyal players are so embedded in the system they've been gaslight into pretending it's a little bit different now.

The ways the game is "better" now:

- You are given a path to low/mid-endgame gear that you can then build off to progress further.

- There is now a season system and all that entails (with respect to bringing players back down and through the early game). It provides the path to that endgame gear but you're stuck on the path by doing it.

- You can now quest to get some good high level gear.

- Through years of farming and a dedicated base of gamblers, you can purchase your way to gear progression instead of engaging with the gambling system.

- As far as I can tell, there isn't anything P2W anymore. They adjusted the couple early items I remember being the poster child of P2W and now it's just pay for convenience. The convenience is so critical in some cases that I literally couldn't imagine playing the game long term without spending money but I'll admit it's not directly P2W. Side note, if you spend enough years chugging along you'll eventually get some level equivalence to those that paid for the convenience but make no mistakes, that's a very very long grind of it's own.

- In terms of action based combat it's god a good variety of skills that look flashy and cool.

- There are now gear level caps on some content so even if you're not best of the best you can compete with others. My limited understanding it's more of a soft cap so more gear is still better, just diminishing returns become so heavy that's minimal.

The ways it's still a terribly bad game.

- That path to initial endgame gear and eventually buying instead of gambling? You still have to engage with the enhancement system to get it. Enjoy your merging stuff together only to see it destroyed/downgraded/needing repair. Complete with low percentages, grinding out resources to continue to do it, and all the frustration that entails. If you know what you're doing and have followed a min/max guide you might be able to do it all with little to no frustration, but a string of bad luck or following the wrong guidance and you'll be stuck in a hell loop trying to follow the recommended path to gearing that is only slightly better than it used to be. And I'm 100% convinced even the min/max guides are highly dependent upon years of built up resources (itemized failstacks) to reach the "no frustration" level that any new or newish player won't have.

- The inventory management is still hell. Tons of different sorts of boxes all rewarding the same set of basic materials you care about and a bunch of junk. However there are only a few tools for helping manage or deal with it easily at a potential loss. If you've played GW2 it's like that but needing to manually open a lot of bags instead of a stack at once, and no ability to sell your unidentified gear if you didn't want to open them all individually (and no material storage).

- Still so many simple QOL changes not implemented. Like you can now do a quest to access any cities storage from any other storage, but each storage is still individually separated and not combined together for easy viewing/management. The default path of conversations is going to cause you accept tons of quests you don't care about if you play multiple characters and speed through pointless menus. BDO has this incredibly annoying alert pop up system but even if you disable every single option relating to it you'll still get all the messages related to your guild members from that system. In order to deal with the market you have to move stuff from your inventory to the market warehouse, then you can manipulate it, and then move it back when you've bought something or are no longer selling it. There are at least 7 different types of "inventory" that I've found so far, all completely independent from the others.

- Remember I mentioned the questing for gear? You'll often see it described as free. Sure you can get it without spending real cash, but it's insanely grindy. It's free to the tune of dozens, at least, of hours of work. You might be able to buy the equivalent to the "free" gear before you actually get the free gear through money earned while grinding the free gear.

- I didn't get into the dungeons that have been added but I got up to 61 and tried just about everything else available. And of that, it's incredibly one note in enemy types. "Mechanics" equate to don't stand in the fire and very few enemies even have a "don't stand in the fire" mechanic to begin with. In theory you could say there is some depth with timing animations and dodges but I didn't find a single piece of PvE that drove me to figure out if that was even a thing. What little PvP I experienced was simply a matter of either you get stunned/grabbed and die to an alpha burst or nothing else matters.

- You don't have to grind in combat. You can do other things. Most of those other things are as grindy as just grinding through open world enemies, are done 99% AFK, or a literal way to mindlessly kill time. Life skills look deep because you've got multiple tiers of materials, several different forms of crafting, and individual items can be made of up to 5 different items, but at the end of the day it's literally just grinding/buying the right materials and press button. All the complexity and interesting moments are in maximizing your ability to gather materials faster or stack up your bonuses to level life skills faster. Most of the crafting time you'll be pressing button and walking away from the game to let it do it's thing. Horse breeding is 30 seconds of finding and capturing a horse, then AFK grinding it's levels and another 30 seconds of gambling on getting the right skills. Trading/Bartering is just picking an item up from an NPC, 30 seconds of setting a path, and AFK walking/sailing to the destination. I'm not a fashion person so there might be something to the game in that respect, although fashion items from the real money store are incredibly expensive. If you find something you enjoy it probably won't feel like a boring grind and that's great. Still a boring grindy system though.

All that may sound like problems other MMOs may have, but all of that is solo. There is very little need or encouragement to group up for anything. Life skills are solo experiences. There are some grind spots that recommend multiple people but the time and focus investment to make grinding worthwhile means you need friends/partners who are hyper dedicated to make it worth the effort in travel time and sticking around long enough over hitting a solo spot. There were only two times I could actively get together with others in a reasonable time frame that didn't feel actively pointless, doing Rift Echos (a mini-boss rush event for season characters to get season materials) and World Bosses (not grouped content, just show up at the spawn point and hit boss).

The free gear is also not free on top of the grinding. The free PEN Jetina accessory? Once you grind 3 months of quests it still costs 7-10 billion silver or something. Way cheaper than getting it the normal way, but hardly free.

I’ve been playing this for 4 months and I really like this game though. Grinding on a good class is hella fun, the world is cool, lots of goals to work towards. Rng can suck but it’s a minor complaint for me and the type of games I like.

This game has taken the fun out of video games for me for about a year. I always thought I recognized a slot machine as such, but this game taught me better. However, I am also thankful that I had this experience. Through this game, I learned to analyze systems more carefully before investing time in them. So in the end, Black Desert Online was a very good teacher in the school of life.

As soon as a video game makes you feel sick and nothing but hate, you should think about whether the developers really want to make you have fun with this game, or rather pursuing a different goal.

BDO "season" mechanics (effectively putting you at TRI/TET gear for a months worth of play) and welfare handouts (including pets, maids, costumes, and high tier horses) these days will have you with more than whatever you had previously before the transfer, unless you had whaled a bunch of inventory/weight/maids.

So probably nbd whether or not you managed to transfer accounts

I got some random twitch drop bullshit and decided to check this out.

I didn't think to actually read up on the game (RIP), so I made a Corsair as a seasonal character. I assumed I could make a 2nd seasonal character because I had 2 little ticket dots.

Anyway I started playing Corsair, and thought "Hmmm, this is fast and agile, I should make a tanky character to complement it" (coming from WoW, land of infinite alts), only to discover I can't in fact make a Nova alt as a seasonal character.

Having gotten to like level 12 on the corsair, have I screwed myself over by not reading up on things? I stupidly claimed a bunch of stuff on the Corsair without considering what could be moved between characters, again coming from WoW and not having played much of these kinds of MMOs before I didn't really pay enough attention to things...
