I didn't have Jens for the village fight, so instead I just balled up on the stairs and let Erador and Serenoa get punched in the face. Serenoa had just gotten Counter Stance so Avlora slowly killed herself trying to murder him.

I gotta say, whoever set up (ch. 14 spoilers) the Avlora fight at the fountain is genius and I cackled wildly when I realized what they wanted me to do. Doubly so when I noticed the recommended characters were Narve, Ezana, and Piccoletta. They knew exactly what they were doing :allears:

For added fun I brought Jens to make sure that even if someone escaped Piccoletta's poo poo Pit, they got punted right back in.

EDIT: Serenoa's convictions have been strengthened.

Feel free to also toss Thunderstones using anyone with hands as well. The gridlock is only rivaled by the penultimate stage of Frederica's path, IMO.

Oh, I did. It was glorious.

One of the healers did an absolutely galaxy brain play though, stopping one tile in front of the spring trap setup, allowing the boss to brace against him and not get knocked back into the mess. A few zaps later, the healer died for his hubris and Roland shoved the boss right back into the deep end.

I'm a big Tactics Ogre fan and think Triangle Strategy is just better, full stop. Mainly in the gameplay department. The voice acting is very uneven, which is probably due to covid complications and a director who wasn't up to the task. Making dialogue sound fluid when actors aren't doing it in the same room together is an extremely difficult thing to do and I am thinking that is probably what happened here.

As for lacking character customization, good. I think everyone forgets just how grindy TO and FFT are, and ultimately how homogenized character builds became in those games. I like characters that are very upfront about what they are. It instead puts the customization aspect on team building, and making compositions that synergize with each other. There are tons of ways to approach any given situation. Every character is viable and useful in some way, and that makes decision making way more dynamic and fluid than in TO and FFT. That they also did it in a way that does not require you to grind is just icing on that cake. It's just fun to experiment with, and the game actively encourages you to do so.

I’m on the version of chapter XI where you defend the Rosellen village and the guest character keeps getting himself killed. Is there any bonus for keeping him alive? He’s a pain and I don’t want to waste Veela’s turns healing him.

Nope, let him get mulched for his hubris.

Anyway, I just completed my first run through of the game, and I know this game is good and something special because normally at the end of games like this, I feel burned out and just want to finish. With this game, I just want to dive right into NG+ and continue.

As for Serenoa, it does feel like he has narcolepsy half the time, but then sometimes he has some real sass or fury behind his acting and the discrepancy just makes it stand out even more. The way he dealt with Telliore was ice loving cold.

Ch. 15 character Trish hits like a god drat truck, can use fire arrows, has great mobility with Leap, and her weapon skill is Act Twice. She also auto-steals from enemies she hits and will pick up any spoils bags she crosses over while moving.

For NG+, the best money grinding is actually that level 10 mock battle. Bring a mage (any except Quahaug) and Lionel, and equip the mage with the Gold Pinkie Ring. Have the mage one-shot all but one of the enemies, while Lionel picks up the bags they drop. The higher Lionel's level, the more money you'll get per bag. In the mid 30s you can get about 7k-9k gold for about 3 or 4 minutes of work.

Edit: As for the fight, yes, the best strat is to rush down the boss ASAP. Although I set the difficulty down to Normal for the last few fights since they were getting tedious, so maybe it doesn't work so well on Hard.

The way I handled it was to use Fleet Footed and book it onto the bridge to pinhole the enemy, while Corentin and Frederica rained giant nukes on the blob that formed. Erador with King's Shield is stupid good and can hold the line indefinitely as long as you have ways to feed him TP. Since the escort units have... very curious ideas regarding self-preservation, babysit them with Hossabara and yeet them as necessary.

I thought the music was absolutely on par with Octopath, personally. Some of the boss themes go extremely hard.

I finished the true final boss last night, and was impressed that seemingly every single character has special dialogue for it.

So about Giovanna: Her real power is Gaea's Rage. Namely, it has infinite range, as long as it's not hitting the height limit, and hits like a truck. It also has no terrain restrictions. It's a better version of Archibald's piercing arrow. If anything, this makes her better for chokepoints than open maps, because you can maximally line people up.

Also, her terrain problems are not as bad as they seem - on downtime turns you can toss an icestone or firestone down to make better terrain for her wherever you need it.

Characters who are 3(?) levels or lower than a map's recommended level will get a full level whenever they take any action at all. Mock battles can let you make this up easily. Use HP Pellets or bring Corentin and have him put down ice walls for people to whack.

Lionel, for that matter, is insanely good. I still don't get it when people think he's bad, being able to effectively shut down choice targets from long range and draw them into your killzone is incredible.

The people who turned off voice acting really miss out during that stretch of the game with the English VA. Some real venom comes out there, especially from Frederica and Benedict.

Yes, this. Especially the Chapter XVII scenes. It's seriously weird, as though all the good voice direction went to the end of the game. Serenoa, Frederica, The Hyzante Beard Spear guy whose name I cannot remember right now, and Benedict are standouts.

Serenoa's reaction to Roland's plan is priceless, lmao

It says recommended level, when it's really more of a soft cap. Once you're at or above that number for a mission, you will gain very little EXP.

Yeah, it may not seem like it, but there are good reasons for all three choices. I did help the Roselle my first time through, though. It actually ended up being what saved me from accidentally pulling the Golden Route on my first time through.
