I'm either taking an insurance policy at IOL or Doaks.

I miss Duke, he let me go home after the 5th.

Alright, I can't stick around for the rest of round 7, so this is the way UDFA is going to work. I'm going to list my options in order, and some options have a backup selection if the first is taken. If there's no more options for a selection you go down to the next one on the list.

1. Josea Borregales // Alex Kessman, K
2. Felipe Franks, QB
3. Gerrid Doaks // Mekhi Sargent, HB
4. Josh Imatorbhebhe // Rico Bussey Jr // Jonathan Adams, WR
5. Shaka Toney, E // Justin Hilliard, LB
6. Marvin Wilson // Darius Stills, DT

The Bangles are cutting Rashad Weaver. Wait is it cutting somebody if they haven't signed their rookie deal yet?

So the picks are in and I’ve had time to simmer on them. Here’s where we stand:

1.5 Penei Sewell (actually selected at 1.7, 2 picks after, Detroit)

board posted:

**** T Penei Sewell, Oregon || 20|| 6’4 331 30 ****
EH 5, Ath 1, DN 1 || Obvious starter at guard/tackle year 1, extremely high ceiling, RG/RT 1
EH: 85, + excellent power and str, quick sets and active hands, footwork, - finisher, speediest rushers.
Ath: 1, hs guard, +++ ath, great mobility pass pro, tremendous second level, Rt/LT exp, somewhat limited as finisher
DN: 1, ++ run blocking, athletic, some spotty technique, like as guard and tackle

Slots in as a RG/RT day 1, depending on how he does in camp.

*****

2.46 Terrance Marshall (2.59, 13 picks, Carolina)

board posted:

**** WR Terrace Marshall Jr., LSU || 20 || 6’2 205 4.4 ****
EH 4(fl), ATH 7, DN 5 || likely a #2, plug/play, can stretch the field, adequate for need, Awkward if Tee isn’t a #1
EH: 78.5, + yac, big play, box out, versatility, stretch vertical, - iffy routes, vs press
ATH: 2, High level HS recruit, good frame, produces in end zone, some drops, questionable blocking
DN: 2, slot + outside, iffy blocker, exceptional production

Will compete w/ Ihmir S-M for the starting X day 1. Not quite the best speed but more than adequate for what we need.

*****

3.69 Milton Williams (3.73, 4 picks, Phili)

board posted:

**** DT 3/5 Milton Williams, Louisiana Tech || 22 || 6’3 284 4.63(!) 34 ****
EH 3 DT, ATH 4, DN 4 || Draft crush, ++ potential as 3. low floor. Day 1 rotational, likely to start quickly. Pass rush
EH 79.5, + versatility, hands, very quick, multi-technique, - needs more weight
ATH: 2-3, room to fill frame, lateral range, improvement in conditioning and play, multi alignment, leverage issues
DN: 2-3, 3/5, ++ vs run, ++ath, twitch, technique?

Should compete for the 3 day one, potentially a rotational guy while he develops. High upside.

*****

4.111 Trey Smith (6.226, 115 picks, KC)

board posted:

**** G Trey Smith, Tennessee || 21 || 6’5 321 32 ****
EH 9, ATH 9, DN 11 || Boom/bust, potential to be a real + lineman, Also possible to be a wasted pick inj/technique
EH: 76, + pass pro, anchor, redirection, climber, str, - little slow with hands, lumberer,
ATH: 3, “bully strength” mover, nasty in contact and good movement skills, high pad level, “sloppy” power scheme
DN: 3, Natural right guard, exceptional power, limited flexibility/mobility gap RG, natural fit

Developmental guard. I wouldn’t say no to him starting at LG if he beats out the existing guys, but the plan is for him to be the guy who takes RG 2022 after Sewell slides or Reiff walks.

*****

4.122 Rashad Weaver (4.135, 13 picks)

board posted:

**** E Rashad Weaver, Pittsburgh || 23 || 6’4 259 4.86 6.97 20 ****
EH 7DE, ATH 12, DN 31 || some limitations may affect ceiling, may disappoint in pass rush ceiling, day 1 rotate
EH: 75, + power/acceleration, polished, awareness, swatter, - burst/suddenness
ATH: 3, NFL frame, good hands and hips, flexible positionally, upright, lacks explosion, versatile
DN: 5, inj 19, length and power, -ath/bend, good vision

Cut for punching a lady. Whoops. I would have taken Jordan Smith over him, taking Trey so early was the first obvious mistake I see in this class.

*****

4.139 Brevin Jordan (5.141, 2 picks, Houston)

board posted:

**** TE Brevin Jordan, Miami || 20 || 6’2 247 4.67 ****
EH 2 (H), ATH 3, DN 3 || Very appealing prospect, bit redundant w/ existing roster, luxury, if he falls. versatile
EH: 77.5, + routes, change of direction, YAC, vertical, flex / H – blocking consistency, conditioning/durability
ATH: 2-3, excellent athlete, speed translates, physicality, frame may be weak for blocking, body language tips routes
DN: 2-3, TE/WR, + YAC and routes, Competitive blocker but not capable, F

Excellent value at this selection, should compete for a starting TE spot by the end of the year or at least be a contributor in pass first settings.

*****

5.149 Ihmir Smith-Marsette (5.157, 8 picks, Minnesota)

board posted:

**** WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Iowa || 21 || 6’0 181 4.47 ****
EH 8(fl), ATH 37, DN 16 || fast enough for our purposes, #2, DUI, great routes – particularly post and doubles
EH: 75.5, + press footwork, routes, speed, return game, -str through contact, poor reads vs zone
ATH: 7, quick, vertical routes, some character issues, needs work on ball skills
DN: 6, speed, vertical receiver, limited by qb play, limited strength, dui

Compete w/ Marshall for the starting X, great depth piece.

*****

6.190 Jonathan Cooper (6.239, 49 picks, Denver)

board posted:

**** Sub E Jonathon Cooper, Ohio State ||23|| 6’2 253 4.7 7.02 28 ****
EH 21E, ATH 30, DN 20 || Probably a permanent rotational pass rusher, but with a very high ceiling.

EH: 72, + twitchy, burst, fundamentals/technique, quick hands, vision, - tools, OK strength
ATH: 6-7, hard charger strong hands, relentless, violent tackler, captain, not flexible, ceiling? rotational
DN: 5, high motor, designated pass rusher, good hands and counters, potential starter

Rotational pure pass rusher. I was really bummed Nasrildeen didn’t quite make it, but he went ~3 or so picks sooner.

*****

6.202 Dylan Moses (udfa, Jacksonville)

board posted:

**** LBS Dylan Moses, Alabama || 22.93 || 6’1 225 NA ****
EH 4, Ath 16, DN 11 || great fit for need at LB, questions re durability and vision. If he falls.
EH: 79, +explosion, run/chase great blitzer, - durability, instincts, block shedding and zone
Ath: 5, high level recruit, smooth, makes reads for team, struggles block shedding, Injury concerns
DN: 4, sam/will, +size, still room for growth, +physicality, sideline to sideline, ++technique and vision,

The second level run defender we needed. Should compete for a significant role if the knee holds up.

*****

7.235 Sadarius Hutcherson (UDFA, Tampa)

board posted:

**** G Sadarius Hutcherson, South Carolina|| 23 || 6’3 321 35 ****
EH 16, ATH 17, DN 13 || Good scheme fit, less versatile than Morrissey but better ceiling.
EH: 73, + moves DL, poa str, twists/stunts, - feet lag, limited movement.
ATH: 6-7, frame and anchor, good attitude, stiff lower body, ok mobility, run blocker
DN: 6, experience at T but should play G, mauler, balance and hand placement issues, gap

I wanted Doaks and Hutcherson, and I thought Doaks was more likely to make UDFA. Mistake. Oh well. Guy to compete for a backup role.

**** WR Josh Imatorbhebhe, Illinois || 23 || 6’0 218 4.52 ****
EH 4(se), ATH 46, DN 24 || #2 lottery ticket, plays faster than 40. If he develops could be very promising.
EH: 81, + Athleticism, versatility, release is explosive, routes, physicality, -drops, vs zone
ATH: u, not a burner, good at catch point, drops
DN: 5, needs development as route runner, plays fast, potential as starting X

Signed as a ST guy, I like his upside to play as a receiver in the long term.

**** K Jose Borregales, Miami || 5’10 206 (ath 6) ****
HIM KICK BALL GOOD

Starting kicker.

(Atlanta)

board posted:

****QB Feleipe Franks, Arkensas || 23 || 6’6 234 ****
EH 10, ATH 12, DN 10 || I’m not spending a pick, but Franks would be an ideal 3rd QB w/ potential.
EH: 73.5, + touch, accuracy, reasonably aggressive, ok ath, -placement, pressure off edge, hitch
ATH: 7-u, sturdy, good arm, deep ball, “bird-dog” good passing percentages
DN: u, OK mobility, Practice squad qb w/ upside

Ideally he wins the backup spot, but I’d be willing to carry him as the #3 on potential

(Tennessee)

board posted:

**** HB Mekhi Sargent, Iowa || || 5’8 208 4.68 ****
EH 52, ATH 42, DN 35 || I just want him as an UDFA option.
EH: 66, + leg drive, balance and chipping – ath, doesn’t create
ATH: u, No write up, impressive bench and solid SS/3 cone.
DN: u, vision, elusive, low center +blocking, -rec,

Bit of a mistake, overvalued because I missed out on Doaks. Should have prioritized Shakur Brown or Lorenzo Brown.

I have notes for myself. Weaver assaulting someone sucks, but I preferred Jordan Smith and knew at the time I was reaching on Trey Smith. Ultimately I don’t mind paying a premium for Smith, But I think it’s likely I could have gotten Jordan at 111 and Trey at 122. I also bet on the wrong horse expecting Doaks to make it to UDFA. As a result our pass rush and RB room will be shallow. I’m willing to be weaker in the defense to have an established offense for 2022.

O-line depth doesn’t look very good, you’re betting on Trey having a clean bill of health and we only have 2 guys on the roster who can snap, one who’s dinged up and one you hate.

Yeah, Ironic. I was hoping one of Davis, Meinerz or banks would make it to the 4th. I don’t hate the LG spot being between Spain, Smith and Sua’Filo, but I would have ideally preferred to not have to shop for a starter next year on the line and it’s looking like that’s a probable outcome. I don’t hate Hutcherson’s chances to be a capable player long term, but obviously it’s not likely.

You seem awfully confidant you have a starter at X. It’s not clear to me Marshall or Marsette will be that guy.

We run so many 3 receiver sets, but with this roster we can do that with acceptable depth. I am bullish that one of S-M or Marshall will be a starting calibre player, if not necessarily an all-pro, but double dipping means we can rest guys without falling off. Between the 3 new guys and Brevin Jordan I am confidant we replaced the 90 or so targets Green got last year, I feel optimistic it will be an upgrade in talent from what Green gave us and we’re more resistant to fatigue and injury.

How do you feel about the Milton pick now?

If I had known then that all of my second tier OL would be gone by 111 I likely would have taken Meinerz. I’m not certain on that though, Milton is a great prospect with an incredible ceiling.

Projected roster:

Key:

Offense:

Defense:

(Sewell obviously would start at either RG or RT, listed at tackle as a long term projection)

Currently I am carrying 3 quarterbacks due to injury and the 3rd guy being a priority UDFA, however I would love for Franks to beat out Allen and allow us to cut him for depth at TE or HB. The D is a bit thin at S and E, would be interested in poaching a box safety or a End from waivers if there’s a good opportunity. The big competitions in camp will be Trey looking to start, where Reiff and Sewell line up, Ihmir vs Marshall, and Moses vs ADG. I would love to find a FA center to push Price for his spot.

Oh, by the way, Penei Sewell just tested positive for Covid.

What?

Note: This ends the narrative for this thread. I'm going to post an out of character synopsis of what the experiment was like and my opinions on my draft vs the real thing soon. Then it's going to be yearly updates on how my draft class is doing on their yearly roster.
