Yeah they're super blatant knockoffs, except perhaps for Immortal. The city Darkwing lives in even has the red sky that Gotham had in the 90s Batman cartoon.

Image likes clowning on the other comics companies. Later in the series heroes from Image's own greater library of heroes show up, like Savage Dragon and Brit.

Btw Savage Dragon is a... weird comic. It's like if they took a typical superhero story and unlike in Invincible, where they went the violence route, they went the porn route instead.

Oh, the violence route is still very much covered in Savage Dragon too.

To keep this on topic, Invincible's first official appearance was in this issue of Savage Dragon, which is pretty hilarious.

I don’t remember where I read it, but Steven Yeun made it seem like he’s in it for the long haul (book spoilers) Mark ages from a teenager to an adult and a parent in the comics, Steven talked with Kirkman and said he’s purposefully playing Mark’s voice as younger in this first season because he knows how much the character grows and wants the voice to age with the character.

E: it’s from this nytimes interview with Kirkman, but there are book spoilers in the link, so here’s the relevant quote from the article.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/13/...tp1LcYlOTEZHp14

quote:

While the series has just started, he and Yeun already have Mark’s future in mind. “In the very earliest recording sessions, Steven pulled me aside and said, “I’m trying to play him as very young and naïve because I know where the character goes and I want to be able to change my voice over time,’ ” Kirkman said. “I don’t know exactly how many seasons the show will run at this point, but the goal is to tell that complete story.”

I've never read Savage Dragon is it unequivocally good?

I'm obviously incredibly biased, but I honestly think it's one of the best books that has ever been published. It's so much more than it's traditionally linear comic book story, it's a creative tour de force that encompasses the entire history of comics. Larsen bridges the gap between indie publisher and the established status quo, and in that position he can incorporate the best of both worlds in his narrative. Savage Dragon's storyline runs in real time, but it also runs through almost every facet of comics storytelling imaginable. Larsen tears down and reconstructs the book constantly, the real time nature of the storytelling turns the narrative into an ongoing thesis on the format of comic books itself. Whether it's Daredevil-style man on the street stories or FF-style cosmic adventures, to the flip side and turning the book into a Fabulous Furry Freak Bros road trip, or a R. Crumb inspired sex romp, every choice Larsen makes is informed by the history of the format itself. He's also constantly playing with his art style. The early 90s Image style eventually gives way to a more Kirby-esque influence as the series goes on (the book goes full Kamandi around issue 75), but he's also experimented with heavy inks ala Frank Miller and the very open line art of the European artists. One of his recent issues (252) was a salute to the classic Sunday funnies, every page dedicated to a different comic strip and the art style associated with it.

It's also one of the few places where you can see characters grow in real time as well. I think the only other time I've seen this type of storytelling mastered was in the movie Boyhood. Watching Malcolm Dragon grow from a baby in the late 90s to an adult man with his own passions and motivations has been a journey like no other, he's truly one of the most unique characters of the 21st century, and it's exciting knowing that in the coming years we can watch his children grow and experience a whole new ride through their eyes.

also, there's boobies and people exploding into chunks.

Which artist? Cory Walker leaves the book after the first story arc, and Ryan Ottley’s art jumps leaps and bounds from his early issues. Walker eventually comes back for some fill-in issues with an even more aggressive style which I loved (he also worked on Destroyer with Kirkman over at Marvel).

I was reading the last issue of the series (no spoilers, I promise) and Kirkman mentions in the outro that he originally was going to put the Nolan turn in like issue 25, Jim Valentino (head of Image Comics at the time) was like "dude, your book won't make it to issue 25 if you don't have a hook, move it up to issue 12" and he eventually moved it up to issue 7. Before the Nolan hook landed, sales were waning hard and he mentions the book looked like it wasn't even going to make it to issue 12, but then word of mouth started buzzing, sales picked up, and eventually Kirkman would become, well, Kirkman, and Invincible would last for 144 issues.

Crazy.

I did like the gimmick they used in the comic to introduce the guardians. Mark’s a “lovely boyfriend” because he’s processing all the trauma induced ptsd that comes with being a superhero. There’s a reason why they showed how badly mangled that old lady he tried to save was on his first outing.

Whether Amber acknowledges his trauma or not is irrelevant. It’s like being mad at a veteran for waking up screaming from night terrors, or mad at the wife who has to live with it. It’s not because he’s an inconsiderate sleeper or because she’s selfish. It’s because he has a head full of hosed up memories and living with someone who has that is an ongoing process.
