As of this typing, there have been eight wrestling matches given 5 stars or more by Dave Meltzer this year. Over the ten years from 2000-2009, Meltzer gave only seven matches 5 stars. It was an interesting time for wrestling to say the least, and I think it's time we shine a light on this decade.

Getting the subtle impression this KENTA fellow might be quite the wrestler!

I think the first proper KENTA match I saw was him having a match against Misawa on a ROH show for the GHC Title, and while it wasn't the best match ever it was really, really enjoyable and KENTA screaming,"Misawa! MISAWA! MISARAGGHHH! MISAAAAWAARRRRGHHHHH!!! :argh:" as he kicked the poo poo out of him was great.

Kobashi's 2003-05 reign was absolutely god tier, and outside of the three already mentioned I'll give a nod to Kobashi Vs Minoru Suzuki from January 8th 2005. We all know how good Suzuki is even now, just think about when he was a spry 35 year old. I'll have to edit in a link when I have a look after work but I also remember the Taue defence being great.

Another great match that barely anyone remembers is Eddie Kingston Vs Claudio Castagnoli (now Cesaro) from Chikara Three Fisted Tales, both in terms of the action being great and the story leading into the birth of the BDK later that night.

Never enough Kobashi recommendations:
- here is the Taue defence I mentioned earlier (September 10, 2004)
- Kobashi vs Yuji Nagata (September 12, 2003)

Kenta Kobashi was an absolute master of the craft, even after taking more than a year off to fix his demolished knees. It's nice to see him popping up every now and again if his life outside the ring, especially when his closest contemporary never got to walk away.

And also my pick for the best Angle/Benoit match, Ultimate Submission at Backlash 2001 (April 29)

OK, expanding to 128 total matches for the tournament. But that's it!

Oh, I'm sure we could get this up to 512 :doit: (I'm kidding, honest)

Sticking to overlooked promotions, which in the 2000s is really everyone except NOAH, WWE & maybe ROH

Genichiro Tenryu vs Toshiaki Kawada - AJPW - 28/10/00 - It's the first great match All Japan had post-NOAH split, Tenryu is back in the company he made his name with after a decade away & Kawada was his young boy. They beat the ever loving poo poo out of each other.
American Dragon vs Low Ki - ECWA - 24/2/01 - It's one of the most important matches in US indie wrestling history. Finals of the Super 8 Tournament, which RF Video had the rights to sell. Along with their match in October '01 APW King of Indies Final, this is why the first ROH show had these 2 guys in the main event with Christopher Daniels.
Alexander Otsuka vs Takashi Sugiura - ZERO-One - 18/4/01 - This match is not for everyone. This match is under 10 minutes, features a lot of grappling, & it takes a few minutes for the first strike to be thrown. And one of the first is the Diet Butcher headbutting Sugiura so hard he cuts himself open hardway. And then they go on to exchange headbutts because this is Japanese wrestling. And Otsuka is a bloody mess by the end. But man. If you like it, you'll love it. The crowd is so drat hot. Sugiura had only been wrestling for 5 months somehow. I haven't linked anything else I've posted but a) this is short & b) I was rewatching it anyway when I got reminded of it so no effort to get a link, even if the video quality is loving garbage.
Minoru Tanaka vs Takehiro Murahama - NJPW - 20/4/01 - It blows hard that Minoru Tanaka's peak years coincide with an era of New Japan 8 weirdos on Twitter remember fondly.
El Hijo del Santo vs LA Par-K - Monterrey - 23/12/01 - A Christmas Massacre. Two lucha greats bleed buckets in the epitome of the wild lucha brawl.

I'd love it if any lucha heads could include more El Hijo del Santo because he's a guy I've read about but never seen too much of, bit of a blindspot.

STOP DOING HEROIN
We'd be remiss to not mention probably the best Raw match of all time:

Steve Austin & Triple H vs. Chris Jericho & Chris Benoit, WWE RAW 5/21/01

And some others I think went overlooked

Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle, WrestleMania 19
Edge & Rey Mysterio vs. Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle, WWE No Mercy 2002
Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker Hell in a Cell, WWE No Mercy 2002

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

Masato Tanaka vs Satoshi Kojima - ZERO-ONE - 30/7/03
Katsuyori Shibata vs Yoshihiro Takayama - NJPW - 15/8/03 - I'm mostly putting this here because Meltzer gave it *1/2 which is loving barmy. Doesn't even go 7 minutes but they beat each other up, the crowd eat it up. It's not pretty but it's pretty loving exhilarating.

We're up to 99 matches right now, so I guess I should say that the bracket will be random draw, except for the seven auto qualifiers which will be placed so that they would not meet until the quarterfinals.
