I legit won't give enough of a poo poo about this to watch it. Champions league is fun because of the stakes, this feels like it won't have any.

Might give Hartlepool a better shot at getting promoted back into the football league though, so gently caress off premier league teams to the pyrite goose you're going to slaughter.

I think the point the controlling interests of these 12 (but really 15) clubs have made is the domestic leagues would be burning down their own houses if they tried. The revenue that the domestic leagues and Champions League enjoy come overwhelmingly from fans of these teams.

What would be the asking price for the sponsorship of a London derby between West Ham and Crystal Palace? What is the overseas TV revenue going to be for your European final between Leicester City and *trip to Wikipedia* ...Roma?

It sucks, but it seems inevitable that the super rich oligarchs would eventually turn on the slightly-less rich aristocrats that pretended to be in control of the situation. This is either the endgame or all the leverage needed to cause the domestic leagues and UEFA to bend backward as far as required to maintain the illusion of status quo.

This would own, actually. Let the ultrarich gently caress off to their playground and football can again become a game of the downtrodden, played in crumbling stadiums full of the poor who want to have a fight in the tube station before, during and after the game.

Just make it all home and home knockouts, random draw.

Or at least that's what the Europa league should've done instead of following the champions league bloat strategy

This is one of my dumb hobby-horses that no-one likes or cares about (like all of my posting), but the old European Cup format was bad then and would be worse now despite old men's nostalgia. Brian Clough won two of them essentially by battering teams from countries that don't exist any more and then beating Malmo (which I think still exists, but I'm not going there to check) in the final.

The Champions League format isn't inherently bad, it just needs to be balanced and weighted sensibly.

I think the champions league can stay as it is, but europa league is a joke anyway so let it be chaos.

their preference is for it to replace the existing midweek Champions League (essentially a Champions League but certain teams are guaranteed a place), but as an inevitability everyone else has basically said that the door will be closed behind them and it'll be treated as a full breakaway from existing competitions including for FIFA national team eligibility

how much of that will hold and how much of that is executives playing chicken with one another is a separate question

It's a shame that scheduling midweek league games for the same weeks this trash is supposed to be played would punish non-breakaway clubs as well

It's coming home.

I do feel sorry for the football fans to see something like this happen but the owners of these clubs are business people. They have all made an assessment that this will make them more money since broadcasting rights in new markets are worth more than the cash inflow from legacy fans. There are a lot of legacy fans but they will have to exhibit widespread discipline to boycott this league for an extended period of time and apply political pressure to make this new league fail. Somehow I don't have much faith in that happening. But I would love to be proved wrong.
He can't just say "I just want a bigger returns on my investment, shove it losers".

I can see it not having a huge following in the countries where the clubs play, but internationally it'll be big. Hopefully it gets jammed on high cost speciality channels and nobody can afford to watch.
