When I was little I didn't comprehend that places could share names so when I first heard about the Haymarket Massacre I was wilded out that something like that happened in the Haymarket Shopping Centre in Leicester

Also it's a true shame that the American elite managed to suppress agitators back then, you'd never understand today that Chicago was such a hotbed of radical leftism that it's in the songs and stuff. Rip to a real one the Union of Socialist American States could have led the world.

Right, but the Lib Dems have always specialised in local, decentralised politics. Each Lib Dem constituency party is practically a small, well-resourced political party in its own right, and they're really good at picking up councils by presenting a convincing argument that they're the professional adults who can fix your potholes, rebuild your leisure centre, and not have any embarrassing sex/bribery scandals. That message may not be true, of course, but they're very good at selling it.

This also forms part of the reason why they keep eating poo poo at the national level - the party is so fragmented that they have serious difficulty combining a million local issues into a single national vision.

OwlFancier posted:

There is probably a highly localised effort by the lib dems to take that council and/or some local issue in play. As I said they can go all over the place, council elections are weird and you basically need to just look at all the results to draw any real understanding out of it.

Yeah this is what I intended to post like two hours ago before I got distracted bullying my friend online, Lib Dems can present themselves as really great on specific local issues in ways that boosts them well above their wider profile, and when you're talking about voter turnouts in the thousands or even hundreds, it's probably much easier for someone with a modicum of charisma (or just the ability not to seem like a wrong'un) to have an effect when they go around knocking on doors and poo poo. Especially as we're now probably far enough out that many people not in the national party can go "I hear you on the student fees, weren't me though guv" and be telling the truth and the old stink might adhere a little less?

It's very bad that there is no credible opposition, but it's very good that this particular useless opposition is completely eating poo poo after they hosed the left over, repeatedly, and demanded our votes, money, and graft in return.

We knew Labour was almost certainly dying, the worse they do the better because the sooner it's finally dead the sooner we can try something new.

Yeah there are still some decent people in Labour - Zarah Sultana and Claudia Webbe to name a couple - but I doubt the centrists will ever allow a leftist in again after Corbyn and even if they got in it's hard to see how they rebuild the party at this point anyway, you'd need excellent policies with Obama-tier charisma AND the ability to prevent internal sabotage.

I don't think Boris is physiologically capable of enacting a scheme as mundane and achievable as "build houses and get people owning them", it's all got to be 30 km long bridges over a munitions abyss or subterranean, suboceanic tunnel networks which include a roundabout bigger than the Isle of Mann.

People have been arguing that demographics are destiny with regards to boomers for decades now and other people have been saying "We've been saying that for years and nothing has changed" for almost as long. Both sides miss something. We're only now in the '20s going to start seeing the boomer cohort dying off in significant numbers - the eldest boomers are still a couple of years short of the average lifespan and the youngest are only in their mid-50s - so I would argue that even if demographics are 100% destiny that destiny still isn't likely to arrive until like 2030.

On the flipside is of course that this is only one factor among many. We know that people's political views tend to firm up in their 20s and become harder to change after that, but we also know gaining wealth makes people more likely to think they earned it and to become more protective of it. I don't think we have any idea how those interact, and those are just two factors amongst the endless number of things that make up a person.

Political parties have realigned themselves before, and more broadly than any specific political party or project, out-groups have been redefined so they fit into the in-group definition in order to maintain a status quo, e.g. the Americans realising that the Irish, as some of the whitest people in the world, are white. Or conversely the way the Republicans were trying to figure out how to bring Latinos into the in-group definition and then decided "actually no, nativism is better". But either way, for demographics to be destiny people still need a credible alternative - demographics are not destiny inherently, but they are most assuredly a great opportunity.

As usual the UK continues to do things in the worst possible way. Most places either just herd you off to get on literally the next flight back home with a seat, or will say "You're forbidden from working but we will allow you to enter the country for a few days because we understand you've got a lot of plans that will need to be changed, you're staying with family and at a known address, and you have a purpose here in a familial visit outside of the work you were intending to do. Please ensure you're out of the country by X date." And indeed it looks like we do exactly that with some people but not others? Seems like the sensible thing to do would be to go to Arrivals, collect the person there to meet the passenger, and bring them back to the office to have a chat and figure things out. As with so much else you can be reasonable and meet people halfway, leading to a productive outcome, or you can be a fashy oval office, leading to everyone being angry and hostile, and the UK chooses fashy. Very similar to the coppers "Solve mental health crises by beating the poo poo out of people what have mental health problems" option!

goddamnedtwisto posted:

A random thought that someone much more clever has probably already come up with and rejected, but one thing that I think makes the UK quite so TERF-y is the underlying structure of society. American feminists fought to make women the legal and societal equals to men because the national myth of America is based on equality, while the British flavour of radical feminism (people always forget what the RF stands for) actually tried to establish women as a separate and privileged class because the British national character is still absolutely class-riven.

The logical endpoints of the two are - I think - pretty much what we're seeing played out, because in a truly equal society transphobia is almost impossible in that a truly equal society would not have gender roles; the difference between genders would be the position of a tick in a box somewhere, and biological sex would just be a thing that mattered for reproduction and channeling people into the queues for cervical or testicular cancer testing, no more important in your day-to-day life than your blood group. Therefore in the US the flavour of transphobia is much more easily identified with old-fashioned homophobia - until very recently on this very site you could perfectly acceptably roll out some version of the Guardsman's Defence as a reason to shun trans people, as if trans women were lurking in every bar just waiting to trick poor innocent red-blooded men. Hell even the bathroom thing is just a hastily-resprayed version of all of the "Oi oi, backs to the wall" bollocks you still occasionally hear thrown at gay people.

(Note of course that this also is *way* more revealing of the people with these supposed fears, because what they're actually saying is "My god if I found myself in a woman's bathroom I don't know that I'd be able to stop myself")

Meanwhile in Britain the prevailing form of transphobia is much more bound up with that kind of second-wave "Women are the bearers of life" thought which has always struck me as weirdly Victorian, especially as it's often accompanied by the sex-negative stuff that leads to SWERFery. They may accept, and even fight for, the idea of total equality but the means they've chosen (consciously or not) to do so is to set up "Is capable of giving birth" as a distinct class of human being deserving of special rights and privileges, with the obvious corollary of penis-havers being a lesser class. Once you have that mindset - especially if you've gone on to found a lucrative media career on it - the idea that a penis-haver might be allowed into your Special Club is viscerally horrifying. To them it does actually feel more directly like an attack than it does to the more mainline reactionary form of transphobia. And like I say, a lot of these 60s and 70s radical feminists are now very firmly ensconced within the media and politics so they drive the media narrative - notice that the bathroom thing doesn't get quite as much play over here as it did in the States, because the chosen TERF battleground so far has been self-ID and the ramifications of it.

Of course this also means that the *experience* of transphobia is very different on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Violence against trans people is much more common in the US than the UK (although not by a *huge* amount once you account for the greater levels of violence generally) but the UK certainly feels like a more transphobic place because the big noise about trans people in the US is mostly from dipshits on Fox News and so safely ignored by most good people, whereas over here it's coming from the people who are *supposed* to be the good ones standing up for the oppressed, and it's not like a trans person is going to start reading the Sun after the 436th Guardian column from Julie Burchill.

Like I say this is just a thought that occurred to me that seems to explain a few of the missing pieces and of course comes from the happily privileged position of someone who can just view this more or less as an outsider, so I'm more than happy to hear if and why I'm talking out of my arse.

As with many analyses I don't think this is the whole story but this one has quite a bit to commend it. I will definitely say that transphobia from terfs has a far more vicious feel to it, subjectively, than from other parts of society. Maybe that's because I'm inured to what is, as you say, more-or-less just reheated homophobia, but the root of it being "Ew it's gross" or "God made you an [X] for a reason" just doesn't seem to hit as hard or animate as hatefully as "Your existence is an existential threat to my philosophy". And your average transphobic right-winger is more likely to just make a helicopter joke and forget about the whole thing whilst the terves seem to dedicate their entire lives to hatred with a zeal and focus usually reserved for particularly devout faithful of the Emperor.
