Meanwhile, in Australia, guy obviously went on a price-matching spree to buy a bbq, then to BP to pick up a gas bottle. All of which backs up what I've been trying to tell people for years, charcoal is the superior fuel because it doesn't superspread covid.

# ¿ May 5, 2021 05:36 |
Charcoal you can buy on site yeah, but liquid/gas fuels need to be bought at a specialised outlet which is generally either a gas station or a specific fuel station. Don't ask me why

Few people have come to know the “true” story of the origin of Sinko de Mayo. It is my pleasure to set the record straight. A little known fact is that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The Titanic hit an iceberg and sank and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5 and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Russia bankrolled a massive influence campaign and subverted major political figures to push that shutdown through in order to make Germany ever more reliant on Russian natural gas. AFAIK there's been no impactful accounting or even introspection about that? Thats actually dumber. Wow.

Fiji is going into lockdown https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/300306273/pacific-covid19--nine-new-cases-reported-in-fiji Fiji's FBC news reports three of the new cases are co-workers of a staff member of Extra Supermarket, who had tested positive yesterday. Health Permanent Secretary, Dr James Fong, said Extra Supermarket operates with a well-enforced policy of mask-wearing, and mandated that all staff and customers have the careFIJI app installed with bluetooth turned on, and this has allowed teams to identify hundreds of contacts very quickly. That last line seems very not good

Meanwhile, in a stark reminder that this loving thing is still waiting for its chance to get in, Taiwan:quote:In 2020, the island state of 24 million people was producing extraordinary numbers: fewer than 1,000 cases, about 90% of them detected in recent arrivals, zero infection leaks from quarantine, a death toll of 12, and 253 days without a single local case. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/17/how-did-covid-slip-through-taiwans-gold-standard-defences Emphasis mine. While I'm not a virologist, it sounds to me like you've had multiple spreaders going on their merry way undetected for some time now. The article talks about April, so that's probably 3 full infection cycles if not longer now. Christ.

Meanwhile, in Australia... https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/he...ite-list-swells Four new cases found two days ago, five yesterday, another four just this morning, and the list of places of interest just keeps on going. Particularly of note is that (at least last time I looked) they still hadn't found all the links in the chain yet, with one of them infectious from about the 15th through to when he was picked up in the last couple of days... And, thanks to the quarantine-free travel bubbles, there's a non-zero chance that this could also hit NZ and the Cook Islands.
