A driver on a narrow street in Queens this week tried to pass another car by going into the bike lane at 50mph. Newsworthy because, in so doing, they collided at full speed into an outdoor dining space, murdering one and wounding another—avoiding an all-out massacre only because there were hardly any diners at the time. Police initially announced it was a result of a medical incident, but then video came out

To cops, people who kill people with cars are honorary reserve constables

Unfortunately it looks like the science says poor nations should be beholden to charity, if they get doses at all. It's a shame that the science says that Pfizer profits are more important than global health but thank God the experts are back in charge.

https://theintercept.com/2021/05/04/bolivia-coup-trump-mit-evo-morales/

quote:

The fallout from the MIT researchers’ analysis, which was published by the Washington Post in February 2020, was considerable. In a stunning reversal, the New York Times published an article on the findings, saying that it “cast doubt on Bolivian election fraud.”

The prestigious release was a major blow to the coup regime, leading to references in many of the same major media outlets that had peddled the coup government’s election fraud narrative. The new insight sapped the coup government’s international credibility, which was further degraded as it repeatedly delayed a new election. With La Paz shut down by protesters — this time the crowds were on the side of MAS — the regime was finally forced to hold an election on October 18, 2020.

Three days before the vote, the researchers received the first of the Justice Department’s requests. Trial attorney Angela George identified herself as an attorney at the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, or OIA, and said she had “received a formal request from Paraguay” for assistance in an ongoing criminal investigation. Curiel told her she had the wrong researcher, as he had not worked on any Paraguayan election study, and she told him that Bolivia was the one she had meant.

George never provided details about the nature of the criminal investigation, the existence of which has not been previously reported. Attempts to reach the coup government’s minister of justice, Álvaro Coimbra, were unsuccessful, as he is in prison facing charges of sedition related to the coup.

“We have a few questions about the data report, and we would appreciate if you could let us know when you are available to speak with us via telephone before or by November 6, 2020,” George wrote to the researchers. When Williams explained that his research was based on publicly available information, she replied threatening “a subpoena being served on you and the lab” but also dialed down her demand, saying that an interview might not be necessary. “I am simply trying to find out if the report, Analysis of the 2019 Bolivia Election, that is embedded in the Washington Post article referenced below includes your research and is an authentic copy of the report that was produced … and includes the comprehensive research you and Mr. Curiel conducted,” the prosecutor wrote.

DOJ started 'just asking questions' and threatening a subpoena to the reasearchers following those researchers going to the media about how the election fraud claims in Bolivia were bogus.

If "sources close to" Malinda are leaking that already it's going to be a hilariously contentious divorce and I am here for it.

In other news, UK labour is getting positively cleaned out in council elections (basically local elections + 1 equiv of a special election). You may be wondering "well, what was their platform?" That's an excellent question and they can't quite answer much besides not being Jeremy Corbyn.

Imagine if after the dem primary, the Dems actually literally kicked Bernie and the squad out of the party and told everyone who volunteered for them that they have no place in the party. That's what labour did and the results are not great for them so far.

Its over, they're never going to do it. Manchin and Sinema are making sure nothing will pass.

Not sure what sinema's deal is exactly but manchin is extremely by-off-able. It's not a coincidence his daughter just happened to become a pharma CEO. Every bill that "manchin just won't pass" that also doesn't have an associated giant handout for WV or his family interests means it's something the Dem establishment doesn't feel like passing imo.

The dirty little secret is that it's a lot more than just Manchin/Sinema that's blocking poo poo like the HR1 voting rights bill. Manchin just likes the attention and making something 1% worse at the very, very end. Sinema just likes the attention and curtsies. Overruling the Parliamentarian on the Minimum Wage went down 42-58, so it's not just Manchin/Sinema being shitlibs on some of these items.

Yeah exactly. If manchin and sinema woke up tomorrow believing everything Bernie believed, then suddenly there'd be 2 more no votes materializing out of the air. The Dems can't even get fully behind the idea that democratic voters should be allowed to vote.

Out of all the strikes I saw on all the different buildings, I only saw one building that *might* have had secondary explosions going off from munitions cooking off. All the rest either 1) didn't have weapons caches, or 2) the caches were just guns ammo and not explosives, or 3) the Israelis intel was wrong, or 4) the Israelis are lying.

The idea that these are enemy bases but there's no reason to take them over to get the intel, and how it's an imminent threat but also we can give an hour warning to get out - it's all just so transparent. I would respect it more if they just openly said "these are intended to punish civilians"

We're always making such a big deal about how those bad Muslims in Afghanistan won't let girls go to school. Considering this, it's ironic that we've decided Iran, a country whose universities and parliament are full of women, is the one Muslim country in the region we can never be friends with. Almost as if we don't actually care about women's rights...

Biden's fp so far is a direct continuation of trump's. The optics internally are different - Trump would be bragging about this while Biden keeps quiet -but the actual policy is the same. I was hopeful with the Yemen announcement but it doesn't seem like that was meaningful.

This may be shocking to some here, but it's looking like Biden won't actually be FDR 2.0

Republicans do the stuff they believe in, they overreach, dems undo maybe 10% of that when they get power, repeat repeat

Convincing refutation.

Are you serious. Have you forgotten your posts from just a few months ago. You and acebuckeye were the biggest "actually Biden has the most progressive platform" guys in both current events and the Biden threads. You were so impressed by acebuckeye's posts on the subject you named at least one current events thread after him.

As for the this isn't Biden's fault argument, one of the biggest cases for Biden is that as a long time Senate mover, he could move the Senate.

What's actually happening is that the Dems don't actually want to do the things the Dems won't do, and then they can hand out the credit for stopping the radical dem agenda to moderate dems who want the nonpartisan clout.
