Almost halfway through this lovely year so crack open some frosty beverages sit down and just keep on posting.
Dads feel free to dadchat
BMW owners feel free to coolingsystemchat
Australians feel free to burnout chat
Miata owners feel free to idk discuss hairdryers or combs

In depressing news, my brother scrapped his first car (e46 330ci) because the fees to fix it were more than it was worth. he said he woulda given it to me if he knew i was interested. I swore i would never own an automatic car but free black e46 330ci? I would flip that like someone turning a corner in an early a-class, either that or slam that barra/t56 combo a mate has lying in his shed into it.

In non depressing news, my car healed itself and is no longer throwing random CELs so huzzah for that i guess.

I illicitly posted this into the wrong month's thread 🤦‍♂️

Edd China (the original mechanic presenter from Wheeler Dealers) has a new show on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snL20nBCi04

He's up to the 4th one already: trying to get an old Range Rover through MOT.

He's a bit more haphazard than I remember! Standing under a shower of fuel and triggering the pump with a contact switch in his hand; setting fire to bowls of fuel to demonstrate something? Using a variety of torches in a small office filled with flammable stuff...

Well done, techbros are the wooooooorst.

Last week saw SV twitter have an absolute meltdown when it turned out that a tech company turned out to be toxic after they had collectively put it on a pedestal.

I used to buy about 6 tyres on friday when i got paid and by monday they were all down to the cords so yes, I did a LOT of burnouts. Enough burnouts that I bribed a tyre guy with at cost grass from a dodgy mate to pay 3 bucks each (used tyres, the 3 dollars was the disposal cost at employee rates)

I'm just hoping that by the time they get cheap enough that I could get one as another car just because I have the room, that they aren't completely beaten to death.

High hopes, I know.

Sounds like you need a deal with a local tire shop to "borrow" their not quite used up recycled tires before they actually get picked up, and a cheap tire machine.

unfortunately for me (probably fortunate for everyone in a dusso within 40k) i now have a car i like too much to burn rubber in constantly. i figure at 3 bucks each (with mounting) it was cheap enough fun not to hassle, plus he had a gnarly xr6t swapped wagon he would bring along.

3.0 so it'll be a little cheaper to run, no air suspension, no hvac buttons missing, no idiot lights, no burnt out pixels. The steering wheel doesn't even show any real wear.

It's been a rollercoaster of a night but i think I might have really hosed up. I woke up with a feeling of dread, reminded when i bought that benz that ended up being salvage.

First i found this.

perfect history, not a single accident or damage claim, obviously somebody who cared about the vehicle.

Then i found out it was manheim auctions who paid for the report, and found a thai facebook page that seems to cache all kinds of automotive stuff, and found this.

Kind of upsetting. The auction house(not manheim) usually discloses stuff like this in the same way. Especially in a time when you never have the opportunity to hear the vehicles run because of the pandemic, even if you book an appointment to view them on site. There are 9 other vehicles in the same sale with the hail damage (among other things) disclosed.

Ultimately the gently caress-up is on me this time, but considering my history with the company, if the thing doesn't seem capable of the drive back, i would hope they will waive the fees to send it back through with the proper disclaimers and i'll have to take whatever the hit is on the difference, at the least.

You win some and you lose some. I'm curious to see how rough an engine can run without immediately triggering a CEL

e: dang, could be worse.

Honestly if my gently caress ups only cost $1900 I’d be pretty happy. Is it a fake car fax or ?

The carfax is legit and clean. I think i can maybe see some of the hail damage along the front edge of the hood, but it might just be weird building reflections or something.

Either way, the hail was never claimed on insurance, i guess.

going over the pics, it seems there may have been recent work in the engine bay, so possibly they bought it to fix it as a flip, but considering it only did ~230kms since last being sold, I'm not holding my breath. I think it's just someone trying to get out of a mistake.

On the other hand, i can't see it doing 230kms if it skipped timing or something equally major.

When i bought the 540i it couldn't keep itself running and had a huge chunk missing out of one of the wheels, so maybe it will all work out. It's just a shame because there is so much good about it.

Almost 3 years ago now. She doesn't drive enough anymore to justify a $500/mo truck payment and $250some/mo insurance. It just rolled over 25,000 kms and she's got offers on it for within a couple grand of what she paid because the american market is so nuts.

We were looking for something in the $5k range for her to drive for a year or two until prices stabilize a bit and then kick it down to her grandkids once they start driving/wrenching.

the options for mildly used stuff is so loving bleak right now.
