Buying used cars is such a goddamned nightmare right now that none of that sounds particularly fishy. I recently sold a car for my full and high asking price to the first person who saw it, and made profit selling another car to Carmax - this being a used car I bought from a dealer recently. Shits crazy. It’s why I’m dragging my parents old dead Forester XT home with me and replacing the engine. The profit should be drat near enough to pay off the rest of my Hyundai!

The funny thing is that my wife and I recently leased new vehicles and the lenders are still doing the residual values at pre used car value jump levels. This either means at the end I can buy them out and resell them for a profit or use the low residual as a bargaining chip for getting the next shiny shiny. This all depends on prices not returning to where they were within 3 years and even if they do it is not like I am losing out apart from a higher monthly payment unless I just turn them back in and give the lender a bunch of free money (not happening). I assume the residuals are low because the automated systems they use for pricing cars for lease are lagging behind real world prices or they expect them to return to previous levels and don’t want to eat a bunch of depreciation so are taking the risk on people buying them out at the end vs returning them as normal since they may not understand how a lease really works.

They say you can tell a lot about the previous owner of a vehicle by the CD they leave in the CD player. If it's country they're probably a redneck. If it's rock they're probably a hoon. Last update. I can't believe i lost sleep over how terrible this could have gone. Obvious recent work done: New hose clamps, disa valve has been off, new rear rotors and brake lines. Date code on the tires is 39th week of 2018 at which point according the car fax it was around 160k when they were manufactured. Someone put a bunch of money into this thing. the tires cost more than half of what i paid for the whole vehicle. There was never any hail damage, the only damage is a small scrape on the front bumper and a dent on the front of the hood. It does have the self leveling suspension, but it's all perfectly functional. It seems to have too much rear camber, but it sits nice and high. The buttons, stalks and armrests have no wear whatsoever. The button on the shifter still has all it's texture. It was ordered through the individual program with a black headliner, tinted windows, ski bag, high-fi speakers that sound great, and the sport package, seats, steering wheel and suspension. The ski bag has never been out of the ski bag hole before today. The A/C is nice and cold, it has dual exhaust, all the windows, mirrors, seats, and buttons work. The only things that don't work are the middle lock button and the power steering wheel adjustment, and one headlight. The tick seems to be coming from the exhaust and has gotten pretty quiet. It doesn't even seem to have any real leaks either. It still has the original windshield with stickers about using the phone it's provisioned for while driving. The engine, trans, AWD system, suspension are all solid. There are no clunks or rattles, if it wasn't for the tick you couldn't tell it's running. for 11 l/100km on the trip home which is kinda okay. It still has the original matching full size spare with the original tire on it. There's no indication this thing has 74k kms on it, never mind 174k. It's the nicest vehicle I've ever got from an auction, and that includes the 5 year old king ranch f-150. Powershift fucked around with this message at 21:52 on May 3, 2021 |

Someone tried to steal my friend's 2017 Tacoma base-rear end model work truck that had literally nothing in it Got in by screwdrivering the door lock but then hosed up the ignition trying the same plan to start it, to the tune of $2500 worth of damages. Very bizarre that someone would think they could steal a relatively modern vehicle in that fashion.

Used car price chat: A few years ago I was looking at new Fiesta ST’s at the local dealer, marked down to like $15k or so, and today on my FB marketplace a ‘17 showed up for $20k. Holy poo poo. And this article popped up about someone selling an EP3 Civic Si on Doug Demuro’s site for like $14k and change. I bought mine which is arguably a worse color (silver instead of blue) but otherwise equally clean, and similarly modified and equipped for $4k like a year and a half ago. Holy poo poo again. The used car world has gone insane.

What I hear from the two realtors I know is that the biggest driver in the market in Chicago right now is Boomers downsizing. They're selling their big, family homes and buying up all of the ~1,200 sqft starter homes for tens of thousands above asking because they have the money to bully other people out of the market when they've set their sights on a property Who buys the Boomers' old houses en masse, allowing the market to behave like this, they don't tell me. But it's nice to at least know why home ownership will be out of reach for a couple years. Again

So I got vaccinated 2 weeks ago (first dose of AZ) but noticed for the past couple days my nose has been somewhat stuffed and had a periodic hacky cough although my lungs feel fine (not congested). I assumed it was from yard work (power raking lawn and having it all blow in my face) and otherwise feel fine... even been doing cardio training every day for the last 3 days, but according to the provincial self assessment tool I need to either be tested or isolate for 10 days. And presently Alberta is turbofucked with new infection spikes. I really don't think so though, I literally feel pretty much 100% otherwise. Oh the irony of coming down with COVID after I've been implanted.... A few things: Whats an Italian tuneup? - is that like the quick carb rebuild where you rev the gently caress out of it, then slam your hands down over the carb and let the engine suck the poo poo out of the carb? I woke up early today, showered, picked up my dusty laptop bag, packed up, got in my land cruiser and drove... to work... at an office.... I haven't felt so human since last March. Whats the consensus on a newer (2-3 year old) Volvo XC90 for my wife? Edit: um.... is the pandemic still a thing? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g9MHIL_9qI

Italian tuneup just means revving the piss out of a car/driving it to redline like you stole it in the theory it cleans out carbon buildup on the plugs or something (as a result of driving it too timidly).

The original name apparently came from the ~1950s, when people in the US would drive fancy imported European sports cars like they were big-engine, low-revving classic American cars, so the plugs and everything would soot up and make the engines run like crap, a big problem before the days of EFI. A good hot blast on a fast road would clear out everything and make it run well again. And I'm sure the mechanics didn't mind, either. Warm it up, run it to the redline, drive it at high revs for a while, 3rd gear on the motorway is good. Get the engine really cooking, burn off any moisture in the oil. Most people generally don't rev above 3000 RPM and are too "nice" to their cars. I feel it whenever I have get a car share car that has only ever driven in the city, some hard acceleration and a good blast on the motorway really does make everything feel more smooth. Diesel cars are especially bad for this, because their EGR valves generally activate at a certain RPM (around 2500 on a normal diesel car), and it's perfectly possible to drive a diesel basically forever at such low revs. That leads to the EGR valve fouling from soot buildup and repairs/replacements. If you drive a diesel, run it properly warm ideally every time you drive it, and don't be afraid to rev it. My diesel Panda was really bad for this, after a week of city driving, I could blow a huge sooty cloud out the exhaust on the first motorway on ramp.

It happened with more modern cars too, my mum owned a 2002 Rover 25 hatchback which she drove about 7 miles a day to and from work all at leisurely pace. It went for a service one time and the mechanic said it needed to be run hard for a couple of hours so the key was handed to me, a crisp £20 note placed in my hand for petrol and I was told to have fun. It really did feel restricted at first but a few long blasts up the motorway and some back road work it felt lots better.
