CaptainSarcastic posted:Something I said to someone the other day is that I have a hard time understanding how people over a certain age can fall prey to anti-mask bullshit when we all watched M*A*S*H, St. Elsewhere, and a metric fuckton of medical procedurals that followed after that. What do you see surgeons do? WASH THEIR HANDS AND WEAR A MASK! The idiocy of people who just blow past all that conditioning is staggering. There are doctors more than happy to tow the line on everything going back to "normal", especially with the government officially giving up the ghost on COVID, more than they already have, in May. It reminds me of the Dollop episode on Joseph Lister, a British physician who discovered that basic hygiene and antiseptic procedures would greatly decrease the mortality rate of his patients. His colleagues were hostile to his ideas because, apparently, doctors like their status quo.

Haven't gotten it yet. I'm in China, which has adopted the herd immunity "Covid is Over*" shtick. People are still masking, but most expats are not. I'm the only one still wearing a n95 every time I step out my front door. I also got my hands on enovid spray, which I think helps. There is an influenza wave going around, which the CDC has dismissed as "immunity debt". In a lot of ways, the US and China are more alike than either party wants to admit.

So China recently announced that they are disturbing their version of mRNA vaccines, but they're not the bivalent ones. The American embassy announces if you're looking for the bivalent booster, your best bet would be to go to Macau or Singapore and get it there. Very cool, thank you US government. Aren't the bivalent vaccines outdated at this point anyway?

It's a combination of trying to power through the belief that COVID is truly gone because of no masks and the cognitive dissonance of seeing someone wear a mask with that same belief. That's still like 5% or so of the population being infected a week. My colleagues, students and people I know across China are getting picked off one by one. I'm in Shanghai. People are still masking in the tube, in hospitals and most service workers wear masks, but numbers are abysmal. Paxlovid is available, but you need to be over the age 60 or immunocompromised. The only other ways to get it is if a) you're a CCP member or b) find some shady contact where you pay am exorbitant amount for a product you may not even receive
