smarxist posted:for reading i recommend just reading The Man Himself, Marx is so fun, he's really witty and sarcastic at times, but sincere and he gets so passionate and disgusted with humanity, especially when he's writing on the capitalists and the immiseration of mankind yeah the paris manuscripts are a bit tough because they're largely unedited but they're decent. 18th brumaire is good if you don't mind half the thing being basically recaps of every stupid political controversy of the second republic.

The funny thing is, I'm sympathetic to the idea that Marxism isn't a hard science because the conditions are too chaotic and you can't exactly repeat "experiments", but that doesn't means it's invalid for a first pass estimate of what happens. Like even of we argue Russia 17 and Germany 18/19 are literally the same conditions (someone who knows more can say why that's bullshit) then you can just say "they had similar reactions to the conditions but Lenin got lucky and the Germans didn't" and it still makes sense

Celot posted:If they weren’t a bunch of lunatics, they wouldn’t be Muslim fundamentalists. This is not a material condition, it is an internal mental state. Or maybe, just maybe, fundamentalism is a reaction to the complete failure of a secular state propped up by an imperial aggressor associated with a rival religious group? One could even point out all sorts of antecedents in 19th century empires if we're talking about predictive power. Unless its just that coincidentally everyone the British invaded was just full of lunatics who can't be trusted- which, also coincidentally, was their propagandistic justification for running the world in the first place

Someone who's an expert can jump in here but an example I saw used was the Madhist uprisings in Sudan which were played up (and not entirely incorrectly) in the imperial press as being just full of reactionary lunatics and murderers. But a huge number of recruits had previously participated in a secular liberal uprising in Egypt a short time before, which had been violently repressed by the English. So they figured playing by the liberal rules wasn't gonna cut it, might as well hook up with the fundamentalists.

Centrist Committee posted:I just skipped a whole lot of posts 😎 The cynical answer is that we're 100 years past the beginning of the "common ruin of the contending classes" timeline. If we're not just gonna lay down and die, the big problem is that capital managed to weather the crises of the early 20th century while its main rival in the USSR failed; and the temporary high of capital's success in the mid century followed by the collapse of the Soviet Union helped destroy Marxist class consciousness in the Western working class, probably accelerated by the atomization of western communities. It seems like the way forward is trying to rekindle class consciousness as an identification of "why are things hosed up" and trying to limit the damage we do to the decolonized world

The Voice of Labor posted:what would be a working definition for fascism? the best I got is the belief that bad things happening to people is good as long as they aren't happening to you. I think that's the string that unites the fasc this seems like an insanely broad (and for that matter idealistic) definition. It ranges from meaning literally any form of right wing dictatorship to specifically the overlap of Mussolini and Hitler but I'd say the materialist answer is that it's capital's last-ditch violent response to leftism, sort of like how an allergic reaction or immune disease. Typically it tries to coopt certain elements of leftism as well

Adam Tooze is a lib so feel free to tell me I'm full of poo poo; but the impression I got from Wages of Destruction was that there were some disagreements between the Nazis and the business class- maybe unending war against peer enemies isn't great for trade?- and the Nazis were generally the ones calling the shots, but while it wasn't the precise dictatorship they'd have wanted it was the one that could crush the left so they were pretty much all for it
