My teeny car is a 2019 Smart ForTwo so I think I am completely outclassed here, that is an awesome oldschool 500

Finally got our overheating issue fixed...the thermostat was bad and not opening all the way. Disconnected thermostat and it ran great  Went out Sunday to take some pictures so we can list it for sale and spent the morning driving it around enjoying it.

Took it out for one last drive with my brother to get some artsy shots and the oil pan tried to fall off. Never had issues with that before but had to tow it home again after finding bolts finger tight.

Does anyone know a good source for classic metal Italy ovals like this dude?

There are a ton of German D ovals on eBay and of course a billion stickers for any/every country/state/whatever, but I want a metal plate with the classic serif I. The pictured plate is the only one on eBay and it's $265.

My Google fu is strong and I don’t see them at any price. I’d get a 3d printed one you can probably find cheaper than this but lots of reviews https://www.etsy.com/listing/717483695/custom-made-3d-car-emblem

Good idea. I actually just remembered a place that does custom billet stuff. Much more expensive, but I think even a one-off would come out to half the cost of an original.

Can I suggest you do an acid engraving and then lacquer on a metal plate? What you ask is rare cause it was optional unless you traveled abroad and when it became mandatory, adhesive was the norm. I’ll try see if I can find some old ASI stock but I am not very confident.

I'm not necessarily averse to the use of adhesives, but I'm a little hesitant due to how hot the engine bay gets (very). Also metal with a serif I just feels more period-appropriate than a sticker. I understand that they were only used for international travel but check this out: they're cute and cool imo.

fwiw, I'd email the guy in that ad - they say they have a ton of stuff that's not listed and everyone in italy either speaks english or knows someone who speaks english and I would guess it's a lot easier to find what you're looking for in italy than in the US.

Even the old adhesive style is getting rare to find, if you purchase a old car with a square car plate mount, you can get modern plates with the country integrated without having to plaster the car with sticky crap

Well my run of good luck with the teeny car ended today with the inline fuel filter cracking between the body and the outlet pipe. Dumped a bunch of gas before pulling over and getting a tow. I hate these stupid filters. There has to be a more robust solution for this.

christ, im glad it wasnt worse. those filters are infamous for burning up VWs under the same conditions

if that wasnt a rhetorical statement, the more robust solution is a filter with a metal canister body instead of plastic

I took the teeny car down PCH today and it drove pretty well, but it still has a weird thing with the throttle at high operating temperatures. It only appears once the car is really warmed up, usually from hitting 50+ mph for longer stretches. What happens is 1) the car just idles a lot higher and 2) when I give it throttle, letting off the pedal (or the lever, at the engine) doesn't immediately cut the fuel. It maintains that rev for a few seconds and then falls off. It happens both when it's in gear and when it's in neutral.

Are your carb and intake getting toasty? Could be fuel pressurizing in the bowl.

Maybe. The entire engine bay gets quite hot but I don't know what's too much.

Also I have noticed a pretty modest fuel leak around the carb somewhere. I point it out in this video (the engine is cold here):

I heard about this a good amount in Corvairs, especially ones that ran too hot or ran way too hot screwed up the valve seats.

Thank you. Hmm it doesn't sound quite the same because if I kill the engine, it does shut off immediately. I had problems with dieseling in this car when I first got it, but that was on its original (to me, not the car) engine.

I somehow on my second response re-read 'let off the throttle' as 'turned off the engine' and turned it into dieseling. There might have been scotch involved.

LobsterboyX is local-ish to you and is deeply integrated in the classic car scene. Might be worth firing him a DM.

Hell, a goon recently posted pics of his late father's nitrous-equipped DeTomaso located in another state and LbX goes, "I know that car. Knew your dad, too."

Good on you!

A friend of my father owned a 500 for years, in Tübingen, Germany. He's almost 7 ft tall. It is possible to love a micro car as a bigger person, if it has a sliding roof and you're willing to be a living Richard Scarry cartoon. Yeah, I think it was probably in a collision and they replaced the nose with one from the 70s. The interior is all 60s and the historic plaque on the car lists it as a '67, so I think it's still "legit", albeit with a lot of bad bodywork.

I did some investigation on a few historical spare parts stores here, that is a 70-75 500 L or R front end.

I found a quick page that lists the R identifiers, in case you wanted to check if your car is really a 67 vintage with a wrong front end or a more modern R with a fake old registration.
