I always wanted to play these games originally, but I didn’t have a 360 and also the time limit scared me off (I hate time limits with the exception of small use in say one section of a game). The only one I had beat was Case Zero when I did finally get a 360 for a brief while, but I never got the other games. I basically brought every game and dlc on the Xbox recently (even 4...it’s was $8) after reading some tips saying don’t worry about the time limit the game is meant to be replayed and you can always restart with a stronger character.

I actually played a little of Case Zero again and then decided to try DR3 and man that game is fun and they made the time limit a lot less onerous. It’s a shame that for whatever reason pre rendered cutscenes have tons of artifacts playing it on the Series X.

One thing I do like about the older ones is it’s far far more lighter in tone then 3, it’s not a massive difference. It’s still got a lot of the good silly stuff, but feels more realistic...although I think that’s the more open world and just the upgrade in graphics for when it came out.

Anyway I didn’t see a thread for DR so I figured I’d start one.

Dead Rising 4 is one of the worst games I have played this generation, it has scraps of fun amidst a sea of mediocrity and the destruction of Frank West's character, I remain with the opinion that the series peaked at 2 and it just fell down after that point.

One bullet. One gun. Six Chambers. These are my friends.
The first two games really are fantastic. To me, Dead Rising at its best is horror Groundhog Day.

In the first playthrough I just scour every nook and cranny on the map to shop for fun outfits and weapons while avoiding large crowds, letting everything go to poo poo. In the second playthrough I know where stuff is and am a little stronger, so I take on the main quest. Third playthrough I try to save everyone.

The more they try to condense the experience into a relatively linear plot you can plow through in one go, the less interesting it gets. I also think Case Zero is a terrific sampler and Chuck Greene turns out to be a much better straight-man character than I initially expected. Never played Case West, but it's currently on sale on Xbox for like $2 so I might as well give it a shot.

Dead Rising 4 makes Dead Rising 3 look like a masterpiece. 3 rightly got some flack for the less detailed world and more emphasis on vehicles but honestly it getting especially mean spirited about some of the psychos is 3's worst part. The rest feels right at home.

I'm just gonna say it on page 1 though.

Chuck Greene is better than Frank West.

Yeah Xbox has some pretty good sales going on now for it, also there was a recent Capcom one. I have to say one thing I love about the Xbox ecosystem is that a game I bought two systems and more then a decade ago was in my library right after I booted up my Series X. They really took the right long term approach to BC.

It’s a good point about DR3 and the psychopaths, well Kung fu dude was funny, but the bikers being super rapey was kind of at odds with the series. But honestly DR3 feels like a blend of DR 1/2 and State of Decay.

Dead rising 2, off the record is still my favorite. Pretty much the series' peak before capcom started listening to 'market analysis' and trying to flail the games in a direction it was never meant to go.

Funny enough in actually playing that now. I like the idea of not needing to look for Zombrex constantly. Well at least not for an NPC all the time and every 12 hours, although I get the reason and understand why DR2 is like that.

I liked the games when they were first released, but they are kind of hard for me to play through now. It just really sucks when you start off and feel like you move so slow and also doing the same bosses at the start over and over again. I never did end up beating Dead Rising 2. But I did eventually finish Dead Rising 1.

I remember it was the game that I bought a 360 and a VGA cable for since at the time, I didn't have a HDTV.

Oooooffff I remember reading about those text issues.

I will say even though your slow as gently caress initially, the jump and roll are kind of OP...not complaining mind you...and helps balance things.

I have to say Off the Record is my favourite Dead Rising game and I spent so much time in its sandbox mode where you could just roam around and do whatever you wanted.

Oh my god, my friend and I burned so many hours trying to drunkenly beat some of the time trial-esque challenges in co-op sandbox mode, there were so many ways you could just relentlessly gently caress with other or steal items they needed. My favorite was waiting until they were downed and systematically collecting all the food in the area, only to "accidentally" eat it in front of them every single time

I played the PS4 release and while it was funny running around as M.Bison or Cammy it was just such a hollow experience compared to past games, I don't think Capcom will ever reboot the series I expect it to just stay dead.

This thread reminded me that Dead Rising 4 exists, and that I've never played it or even heard much about it really. By the sounds of things I guess I should keep it that way.

I've played the other three, with the exception of Off the Record.

Dead Rising is one weird enigma of a videogame, in that it pretty much anti-thesis to most expected gameplay designs of the time. It came out during a glut of open world games where the selling points were 'you can go anywhere and do anything' - and it had a amazing open world wherein if you went anywhere and did anything people who depended on you would die, and you would be locked out of the story. Also the very thought of just 'starting again' seemed ludicrous.

As someone who used to do every relevant sidequest and wanted to explore everything / save everyone, boy it was a tense game of time management and effective resource hunting. I'll never forget that fat rear end in a top hat that ate all my food stocks.

It's sad, because these bits turned what would otherwise be a novel but forgettable beat em up, into an incredible game. The more they try to modernize it however, the more actual interesting edges get shaved off, and who wants a mediocre shooter story when games like Last of Us or State of Decay do the great storytelling or emergent gameplay in a zombie shooter way better.

I wonder if in a world where roguelikes and soulslike games are popular with most gamers that a Dead Rising could return to a evolution of the old format / design and be accepted?

Thought as much as I like the idea, realistically as a busy adult with a career and kids I'll never have the time to play them the way I used to again.

Dead rising is the classic. I slightly prefer dead rising 2 because frank is a reporter that has covered wars. Dead rising 3 is what you play for dead rising but vehicles now, it is decent. Dead rising 4 is what you play when you have played all the others and you don't care how bad the story got.

DR4 would be much better-regarded if it wasn't a Dead Rising game. If it was an open-world indie game called Zombie Christmas Crisis or something, with no ties to DR, it'd have more fans.

As an entry in this series, it jettisons pretty much everything that people actually like about DR in favor of flavorless pap. It's Dead Rising-flavored LaCroix.

Truthfully I think it’s Dead Rising, but heavily influenced by State of Decay. Granted dead rising three only came out only a few months after state of decay, so it’s unknown if either dev really knew about the other or was following concepts during development, but it does feel like it. Granted maybe it’s just the vehicles being added, because the game is still otherwise dead rising in terms of things you can do and that are available.

I still find it very strange how after using Justified and Kill the Sound for ending themes they went with some weird 80s pop music for dead rising 3's ending.

I guess it fits the tone of dr3's ending better but that tone change is weird, too.

It's a substantial devolution, but you can have some fun with it. The problem is that it's a 100% power fantasy, which is not something a Dead Rising game should be.

I've got this whole pocket rant about how every developer on the series since DR2 has been under the impression that the series itself is supposed to be stupid, but the humor comes from the player being able to dynamically dumb it down. The original DR is a borderline tragedy all the way through, which you can turn into a farce by showing up to its most downbeat moments in a banana hammock.

Weren't the games post Dead Rising 1 made in Canada? I always found that fascinating since the first feels like such a profoundly Japanese game, both in the design of the gameplay and the anime like characters. But my favourite part was always the
tongue in cheek depictions of western excesses with the mall and guns and what have you.

Making the second set in a casino really was a inspired choice of keeping that same aesthetic. I feel without the candy coloured capitalistic wasteland it wasn't nearly as interesting. I think the dev team for the second really understood what made the first work.

Which reminds me it's been long enough now that maybe I can try Off the Record without feeling like i'm retreading 2 again. How similar is it? At the time I (perhaps wrongly) just assumed it would mostly be a character swap with mostly the same stuff.

A lot's the same, but it's got two new psychopaths, the events schedule is shifted around, and the plot takes a big hairpin turn from DR2 about halfway through and proceeds to get crazier than DR2 ever did.

it's also got a few balance changes from vanilla DR2, the most notable of which is that fire axes and sledgehammers don't spawn right inside the security room anymore, so you can't end up with two new Defilers every time you return to base.

On release I didn't even finish Dead Rising 2 but now it's one of my favorites. It's one of those games that's probably better than the sum of it's parts (having a playboy tie in is so dumb) and I'd love a remaster as long as it doesn't go off the rails.

It's too bad the series had so much drama behind the scenes loving up 3 and 4.

The tears of time
I'd love to see a talented indie developer take a crack at the DR formula. The time pressure aspect combined with exploring the open world and trying to efficiently save survivors is a lot of fun. It reminds me of SOS for the SNES, which I think was related to the Disaster Report series?

It's about time for my once per decade ban for being a consistently terrible poster.
1 and 2 are legitimately great games that work on the central idea in similar but varied ways, and have good characters and a fun enough plot to follow. 3 is a towering mediocrity with vehicles and a poor story. 4 is so stupid I don't know how it got made, and I've seen multiple videos on exactly how it got made. Even knowing literally every step of the process and all the people involved I still can not believe they shipped that piece of poo poo.

RE7 shipped a month later. Hard to believe those two games are from the same publisher.

Dead Rising 4 had a bunch of senior people involved that did not understand the series and threw some of the ones involved with the previous games under the bus in interviews while wrecking everything that the previous games had worked to establish, mechanics-wise.
