Hey I found the reason one of the workshop computers was being VERY slow wasn't due to RAM issues, but because the stock intel CPU cooler wasn't punched down, just sitting on the CPU loosely. Yup, thermal throttling itself to save itself from immolation.

Now the question is whether or not it was my fault...the blame is being passed to manager that caused chaos the other week so I'm off the hook as the one who 'found the problem'

I wore out my poor old Neato Botvac D70 after close to 1500 days of running every single day of the week (laser assembly is knackered on it) so we picked up a Botvac D7 connected to replace it so we could do things like block it from getting stuck on certain furniture.

Now if I tell it to create a floor plan so I can put no go zones on it, it will do that once and then the next time it runs it says it’s on the wrong floor of the house and goes back to bed. I have a single floor house.... how is it so hard to design software that isn’t utterly retarded?

On the subject of the Pulsar GTi-R, it got all the attention, but for a fraction of the price the FWD SR18DE powered GTi was also a pretty decent drive too, plus you didn’t have to worry about the gearbox turning in to a cloud of shrapnel. Only a few hp less than the SR20DE powered SSS versions but in the lighter 3 door. We also got a locally assembled N14 Sentra GT Cup car. They built 40 for a spec racing series, SR20DE sedans with a front lip, rear wing and a cage, ready to hit the track, but were also street legal, so occasionally you’d see one rolling around. A 14 or 15yo Scott Dixon famously rolled one at Pukekohe after getting tagged and I think Greg Murphy also had a few drives too.

We have the roomba i7 with the self-emptying base, but our house is mostly hardwood with throw rugs and no pets.

The game changer in this house and the previous (all hardwood all the time) was the robot mop. I don’t mind vacuuming every so often but mopping got old real quick.

I spent most of this afternoon working with the IT guy trying to work out a quirk with outlook 365. The other 6 users in the workgroup all have the “my templates” add in on outlook except this one log in. And this one log in will change what add ins are active depending on what computer it’s logged in on, but if someone else logs in on the same computer that isn’t showing up with the “my templates” add in, it appears for them.

It’s bewildering considering these machines are all built off the same image too!

Bajaha, you were right. I started organizing/cleaning out my storage unit today. So much poo poo in there that I just flat out don't need and/or won't ever use, and is basically worthless (who the hell wants a 10mbit switch? or 5 year expired supplements?)

Didn't touch any furniture yet (though the bed and frame in there are going somewhere, not sure yet), but of the ~20 boxes I went through.... 18 went to the dumpster. I'm sorting into 3 piles - trash (huge pile in the corner, filled 18 boxes of various sizes, and there's still a good chunk left), "I might wanna keep this, I need to look at it for more than 2 seconds", and "definitely keeping". The definitely keeping pile is so far just one small box (12x12x12"), the "might" box is a bit bigger.

Going to check out the thrift shops for bookcases or shelving units for the extra poo poo that's going into the garage. I am NOT piling boxes in there or putting anything on the floor, full stop (#1, it tends to get wet in there during heavy rain... #2, rodents). The only things going into the garage will be car and/or tool related.

I just need to figure out who will take a lightly used mattress, instead of paying the county to take it off my hands. I only used it for 6 months, I hate to throw it out. The frame is brand new in the box (Wayfair sent 2 for some reason).

I managed to get a mild sunburn on Sunday mowing/edging/trimming the trees. Mostly trimming the trees, since that turned into 3 hours outside and not even finished. Bundling them up today and trimming some more today after work. I finally gave in and bought a Black and Decker corded convertible pole/chainsaw. Finally had enough of wobbling around on a ladder with a chainsaw or reciprocating saw, and still being unable to reach where I needed to go.

Also, you guys know my good boy Jude had to be put to sleep just before Thanksgiving. We finally decided to adopt a new friend a few weeks ago, and the trial period went well, so meet Bear:

He's a big old doof:

We adopted him from a family that just had a new baby, in addition to another young child, and an older dog. He's only around 3-5 years old, and they didn't feel like they could give him enough attention. They adopted him via a local high-schooler run program, which requires that they use them if re-homing, so of course we used the same group. He's been a good dog so far - no issues. Just mud tracked in from all the rain (to be expected) and some abandonment anxiety that he's slowly overcoming. He's gotten out of the back yard once when no one was home, but didn't actually go anywhere. He just trotted up t the car when we got home. He's also figured out how to open the door from the kitchen into the garage - it has a lever rather than a knob, and he can reach it.
I need to talk him for more walls for sure - he's got a fair amount of energy.

Depends, if it's corporate I don't feel I would have anything to knowledge transfer to anyone else, and don't think I would be missed.

If it's a service job that requires my presence on a schedule, I'd let my manager know and ask him what he thought.

I might also give them a chance to counter and match the other jobs pay if that's the only reason.

The professional thing to do would be having a "Hey, I'm sorry, I don't think this is working out, here's why, this is my end date" conversation with your manager. You don't want to burn bridges or hurt feelings. It would be useful to think about how you can wrap up whatever you've got going on, and how you can help your replacement get up to speed.

It will probably be acceptable but the more stuff (walls, doors, floors, furniture, etc) between the wifi access point and the device connecting to it the worse the signal will be.

it mainly depends on what is in your walls. if its just wood and drywall, you probably wont notice. the access point at my parents house is in the attic crawlspace, so up high in a closet is prob fairly similar in terms of the amount of stuff it has to go through.

if you have metal studs or plaster w/ metal screen in it, any walls are going to be more of a problem

imo its worth the few hundred bucks to buy your own modem and router, if only because the isp usually supplies bottom-tier hardware, and you can manage it however you like. but if you pick good stuff that lasts a few years, you probably come out ahead financially too

im not a big fan of the all-in-one boxes either. generally they aren't particularly good at anything if they try to do too much. the ideal setup is a separate modem, wired router, and wireless access point, but it sounds like you might not tolerate that lol

This is my answer as well. The only thing I'll add is depending on your service provider, and your tolerance for time spent, it may be worthwhile to just rent their modem. With Comcast, the entire neighborhood could be out and I'd have to fight with them to convince them the problem wasn't my modem. Every. Single. Time.

I have spectrum and I’ve heard it’s the same way. I’m probably better off renting it anyway I guess because I’m not really all that good with computers and don’t have the patience for it, so I’d rather call them to deal with any problems. There’s no metal in my walls so it sounds like it will be ok in the closet. Bonus is my tv and PlayStation are right on the other side of the closet wall so I can hard wire those too.

That's how my parents house is setup - router on the top shelf of a closet. If it's the ugly tower router, it puts out a surprisingly strong signal (better than my AC1600 TP Link router), but you have to configure it via the My Spectrum app. I haven't had any issues with that particular router (I think they call it a Wave 2?).

Also like Goober said, if there's ever an issue, Spectrum will ALWAYS blame your equipment first. They can do a bit more in terms of remote diagnostics if you're using their stuff.
