Hey!

So last week Doug DeMuro came to my house to film a review with one of my vehicles

https://youtu.be/9YRwb0d8Es4

I have sold a ton of cara in Doug’s auction site Cars & Bids, and gained the reputation of weird JDM car guy.

About 2 months ago Doug emailed and said he’d be in Nashville on vacation and was hoping to drive up and meet me and see what I have (which back then I wasn’t sure what would be sold or come in by then).

Just a great, fun day. He came up early and before I knew it we had spent 2 hours in the driveway just talking about cars. He took the Pajero Mini (which he picked) for about 3 hours to film. He does all that on his own.

Texted me when he was finishing up and met back at the house, we talked cars for about an hour or so more and he headed back to Nashville.

Video went up today to coincide with the auction on his site.

I have nothing but positive things to say. I had been selling on BAT for quite a while (and still do sometimes) and when I started over at C&B they and Doug were messaging a lot about what they could do to make it a better experience, and for me at least it is a world’s difference. Much more pleasant experience. And Doug was a ton of fun to talk to and seemed genuinely interested in learning things that he didn’t know about cheap little Japanese cars.

Overall 10/10, just a lot of fun and glad it all worked out and I got to experience it.

Five degrees to starboard!

Folks from my building are here today, replacing our A/C units. This is ultimately awesome, but I have to try to concentrate while working from home as they take chunks out of the wall to fit the larger units. At least it's a nice day today, so hot air isn't rushing in through the gaping holes in the wall.

Trying to decide between two cars to take on my 5500-mile road trip later this month with my sons. Options are ‘19 Civic Si sedan and ‘20 Silverado.

Pros for the truck:
Storage space for days
Cheap gas
Full size spare

Pros for the civic:
Better handling for canyon roads
Manual
40mpg all day

Cons for the truck:
No clue on pure highway mpg. 23 maybe?
Big. Huge.

Cons for the civic:
No factory spare, would have to take one along
Tuned for 91+ octane, might have to hunt around

I think I’m leaning towards the truck just for storage space and being able to sleep in the bed if the poo poo really hits the fan. One son says truck, and the other says civic. We average 19.5 mpg in the giant beast with our short trips and almost no highway, and I do have a talent for eking economy out of my cars (my civic should be doing 35 combined, not 40). The difference in cost assuming mpg deficit but also lower cost of fuel would work out to like $300 against the truck for the entire trip.

Opinions? Should I take my EP3 hatch instead and spend several days at 4K rpm on the highway?

Is the extra cargo capacity worth $300 to you? If so, drive the truck.

Not sure where your trip is gonna take you, death valley only has 87 on tap. Rural areas along 40 in New Mexico won't have 91.
If you're gonna be out west and the truck is 4wd, worth having the truck to explore the local backroads.

Truck. Storage space, ground clearance, and spare tire are huge benefits imo. We did it in a suburban, and it worked well for Dad and I. I also find driving something like a truck/suburban less tiring than a small car over long distances.

We are going west on 80/90 and then through Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Colorado etc. The last time I did this trip it was 20 years ago so I don’t remember the fuel situation to a tee except to say that I remember a lot of higher elevations had 84 as the cheap poo poo and not 87.

The storage is obviously only a part of it though, as easy access to fuel and overall comfort play a part. The civic is great but I’ve never taken it further than maybe two hours away. The truck is a Z71 so it’s probably ok off-road but we will most likely just stick to easy stuff if we venture off the tarmac at all. It’s just a trip for the boys to see a bunch of national parks and experience the country via road instead of flying over it.

Comedy option: S2000 with no luggage and one son stashed in the trunk.

Truck all day. I find my Sierra to be more comfortable for long periods of time just due to the geometry of the seats and room.

The big downside I have is that I don't have a lid for the bed, so stuff gets wet and or dirty back there, so it goes in the backseat. Fine for two people but that would be cramped for three persons.

CO? yeah definitely check out 70. Utah has some fantastic easy trails that you can do with the truck. Not to mention the scenery there is incredible.

Truck it. National parks are beyond turbo busy right now, you may end up parking on the shoulder or in the dirt a mile or so from the park itself...

Also my gas stations in Denver have 91 as the highest octane, and it doesn't matter as you get higher since you have less air, your Civic won't ping.

Well my ‘19 civic doesn’t turn that many revs, maybe 2900 at 75mph. My ‘02 hatch is the one with the annoyingly short gears

You guys have swayed the balance towards truck.
That’s nice also because then the Si will keep the miles reasonably low. It only has 20k, and the truck has 9k over a year so neither of them get thrashed.

  • Bored of disassembling my bicycles to carry them inside a Toyota Corolla
  • Aghast at the price of AirBnbs this summer
  • Tired of driving things with only two seats in the front
I have bought, as my only car,

A TRANSIT VAN.

It's been to the moon (230,000 miles), it's been fleet-maintained, it doesn't smoke and it has barely any rust.

I'm going to turn it into a small camper/adventure base, as i'm taking summer off before starting a new job in the autumn.

Pack the car with everything you'll be taking with you, pile the kids in there, and go for a drive for an hour. On the highway, off the highway etc.
Then do the same with the truck. Don't forget to look for things like how much does the back sag in the civic when all your poo poo is in there. While the fuel economy will probably still be better than the truck, if the civic is full of poo poo and people, you will probably get a fair bit less fuel mileage out of it.

The truck will probably be more comfortable and if necessary, you can probably throw all your stuff in the back for a few hours while one of th kids stretches out and naps in the back (I don't know how big/old they are, maybe not). Longer wheelbase and bigger tires in the truck will probably be more comfortable for longer drives too.

Lava Hot Springs Idaho is pretty nice, as is Jackson Wyoming.

Insurance is finally responsive. Brokeback is being written off (fully expected that), they said to expect it to be picked up tomorrow. Won't be getting any extra for the touchscreen Pioneer head unit, so I'm gonna slap an old radio in there in a bit. They said they're having an extremely hard time finding comparables to decide on a value, and not using any kind of book value thanks to the used car market being insane right now. They've found three 03-04 Outbacks optioned similarly to mine in 300 miles, only a couple of others that are higher trims.
