GB News in crisis as exec quits and presenter is pulled for ‘taking the knee’

GB News has been plunged into crisis as news of a senior executive’s resignation emerged hours after a presenter was taken off air for symbolically taking the knee on screen, the Guardian has learned.
The rightwing TV channel is contending with other staff considering leaving amid management upheaval, collapsing ratings and plans for a relaunch after Guto Harri was “cancelled” by its viewers.
John McAndrew, the channel’s director of programming, has also quit the station, sources told the Guardian. McAndrew, a well-known figure in the television news industry who has a long track record at mainstream outlets including Sky News and Euronews, was considered to be the channel’s second-in-command and played a key role in convincing many of the more established mainstream presenters to join.
Sources suggested he had come under pressure to dial down the focus on local reporting and free debate in favour of full-blooded culture war topics, so chose to resign.
GB News was unable to withstand the strong and sustained viewer backlash to Harri’s display of solidarity with the racist abuse suffered by the England football team.
The channel, set up on the basis that free and open debate is no longer possible in the mainstream media due to an all-pervasive “cancel culture”, was overwhelmed with complaints that after only a few weeks on air it had gone “woke” and its content was not sufficiently rightwing.
After three days and a growing boycott, which led to some shows attracting zero viewers, the channel’s management felt the need to cut Harri loose. In a statement, GB News said it was “unacceptable” for any presenter to take the knee, a symbol associated with the Black Lives Matter movement, and said Harri had broken the channel’s editorial code.
Friends of Harri said: “GB News is becoming an absurd parody of what it proclaimed to be – not defending free speech and combatting cancel culture but replicating it on the far right. Nasty.
“It’s ridiculous to say he’s breached editorial standards and almost certainly defamatory. In reality it wasn’t a breach of editorial code but ‘sacked for offending the lynch mob’.”
It is unclear which part of the GB News editorial code Harri could have broken. The channel’s public editorial charter commits itself to core values including “independence of our journalism”, “respect for opinions and those expressing them”, and “the right of every individual to form and share their views”.
A spokesperson for GB News was unable to immediately confirm whether Harri would be leaving the channel, and refused to comment on McAndrew’s departure.
The incident comes amid a growing crisis at the channel, which launched only four-and-a-half weeks ago. Some senior off-air staff are understood to have left in recent days amid ongoing turmoil following the channel’s disastrous launch, which was plagued by technical difficulties.
They include Gill Penlington, a respected and experienced producer at rolling news channels such as CNN and Sky News who has worked in the past with the GB News chairman, Andrew Neil. She was brought in as a senior figure before launch, only to leave earlier this week. The departure of other key off-air figures could be announced imminently, according to sources at the channel.
There is also strong speculation about Neil’s current relationship with the channel. He was involved with its creation and is chairman of its board, and the station was counting on his flagship 8pm show to bring in the viewers required to make it a success. However, after two weeks on air he has taken an extended holiday in the south of France. Despite posting dozens of tweets, Neil has not mentioned GB News in almost two weeks or shared any of its material.
The station’s misery was compounded after host Alastair Stewart revealed on Friday he had broken his hip in a horse-riding accident. The veteran broadcaster tweeted he would be out for “a while” but pledged “I’ll be back”. Stewart also thanked GB News staff for their “kindness and support”.
He tweeted: “I was leading in one of the horses & she bolted, knocking me over – rather forcefully!”
The Harri incident has proved indicative of the issues facing GB News. Harri was a longserving BBC correspondent before moving into politics as Boris Johnson’s spokesperson during his first term as mayor of London. He then went to work for Rupert Murdoch’s News UK for several years, yet has found himself portrayed by some GB News viewers as a dangerous leftwing Marxist sleeper agent.
There is particular upset among the GB News staff who earlier this week publicly defended Harri’s right to freedom of speech, only to find their stance later contradicted publicly by management.
Staff describe a split between two broad camps. Some producers and presenters come from a mainstream broadcast journalism background and felt jumping ship to the new channel would give them a fresh challenge or a career boost. Others are approaching it from a more political angle with a personal commitment to culture war topics. Yet more have joined a third camp, who worship fire. In Neil’s absence, the only show with relatively healthy ratings has been Dan Wootton’s late-night show, which has lent heavily into culture war issues.
Neil had made clear before the channel’s launch that he did not want to be a “British Fox News” and would be committed to traditional journalism values albeit with a rightwing twist. However, this appears to be different to what its audience wanted.
As David Kurten, a former Ukip politician who now leads the niche rightwing Heritage party, gleefully tweeted at the channel after Harri took the knee: “Go woke, go broke.”

Hopkins, 46, broadcast a live video from what she claimed was a Sydney hotel room on Saturday morning, describing Covid-19 lockdowns as “the greatest hoax in human history” while joking about elaborate plans to breach quarantine rules.
On Saturday home affairs minister, Karen Andrews, ordered an urgent review of whether Hopkins has breached her visa conditions by publicly flouting quarantine rules.
But the review has been superseded by a decision to terminate her contract, Guardian Australia understands.
Talent contracts have an out-clause: don’t bring the network into disrepute.
It is also a requirement of any overseas personality to comply with visa conditions.
Seven confirmed the decision on Sunday afternoon.
“Seven Network and Endemol Shine Australia confirm that Katie Hopkins is not part of Big Brother VIP,” the network said. “Seven and Endemol Shine strongly condemn her irresponsible and reckless comments in hotel quarantine.”
Hopkins was contracted to Shine rather than Seven.
Last year, Hopkins had her Twitter account with 1.1m followers permanently suspended for violating the platform’s “hateful conduct” policy.
Hopkins, who was repeatedly retweeted by former US president Donald Trump, was removed to “keep Twitter safe”, according to the social media platform.
Hopkins previously compared migrants to cockroaches and claimed the photograph of a dead Syrian boy lying on a beach that sparked a wave of compassion across Europe was staged, as well as stating that people with dementia should not “block” hospital beds.
The production company making Big Brother VIP, Endemol Shine Australia, and Channel Seven were scrambling on Sunday to respond to the growing crisis which threatened to overshadow the broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games which starts on Seven on Friday.
Seven has booked hundreds of millions of dollars of advertising and cannot afford for sponsors to pull out due to public pressure.
Toyota, Woolworths, Optus and McDonald’s lead the list of major sponsors, while Harvey Norman, AAMI, and HP are also signed on. Social media activists and the public have started to target advertisers.

The government-ordered review comes as Labor says the federal government should never have granted Hopkins a visa or border exemption in the first place, releasing a ministerial briefing that outlines the minister’s powers to deny entry to anyone considered a “controversial” visitor.
Greens anti-racism spokesperson Mehreen Faruqi said Seven “has some serious questions to answer” about why they chose to normalise racism on Australian television.
“Hopkins should never have been offered a platform to spew her hate in the first place and Seven should not be let off the hook,” senator Faruqi said.
The deputy prime minister, Barnaby Joyce, has also suggested Hopkins be deported, saying anyone who flouts Australian law should “pack your bongo and get out of the country”.
Hopkins has been allowed into the country despite tens of thousands of Australians being stranded overseas and unable to return home due to reduced flight caps.
The limit on the number of international arrivals coming into Australia via commercial flights was halved from 14 July over concerns from some state premiers about the infectiousness of the Delta variant of Covid-19.
Andrews said she had requested the Australian Border Force review the case.
“It is despicable that anyone would behave in such a way that puts our health officials and community at risk,” Andrews said on Sunday.
“Yesterday I directed Australian Border Force to immediately consider the facts of this matter and urgently review whether this individual is complying with the requirements of her visa.
“Border Force have been responding to that overnight, and continue to do so today.”
She said the Big Brother contestants had received an exemption to come into the country “based on support by the NSW government”.
“The NSW government approved quarantine for Big Brother contestants above the quarantine cap,” Andrews said.
The immigration minister, Alex Hawke, also said temporary visa holders needed to “obey public health orders”.
“Where visa conditions are breached, individuals may face visa cancellation in accordance with the law,” Hawke said on Twitter.
When asked about whether Hopkins should remain in the country after breaching quarantine rules, the deputy prime minister said he would happily see her deported.
“I‘m the one who wanted to send home Johnny Depp’s dogs so I have no problem sending home someone who wants to flout our laws,” Joyce told the ABC.
“If you want to do that, pack your bongo and get out of country.”
Labor’s acting home affairs spokesman Andrew Giles released a ministerial briefing received by Andrews when she took over the portfolio, obtained through freedom of information laws, which outline the powers available to the government under section 501 of the Migration Act.
The document says that the act allows the minister to cancel or refuse a visa to persons who are considered to be controversial visitors.
Giles said the minister did not use the powers available to her and accused her of hiding behind NSW for “what is the most fundamental responsibility of national government”.
“Ms Andrews was told about her powers – and responsibility – to deal with people just like the notorious Ms Hopkins. Why did she ignore this, putting at risk workers and our social cohesion?”
The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network also criticised the move, writing to the prime minister, Scott Morrison, to question whether a character assessment had been undertaken before her visa was granted.
“The decision to allow Katie Hopkins into Australia for a public-facing purpose is highly controversial and should have triggered a serious character assessment,” the letter from AMAN’s Rita Jabri-Markwell said.
“Hopkins has socialised and mainstreamed the conspiracy theory of an ‘Islamic invasion’ and ‘Islamic takeover’ to broad public audiences, heightening the risk to families and communities who experience hate speech, harassment and threats in public places and other forms of hate crime.”

I remember for a while in the early 90s, when I was about 10 I'd wake up before 5am and watch the early morning news on ITV which felt like it covered more varied news than the prime time broadcasts: vividly remember the Siege of Sarajevo. Anyway, there'd always be loving public service ads and they'd always be horrifying, like one about a kid drinking bleach stored in a soda bottle or houses burning down coz someone fell asleep with a cigarette lit. Nightmare fodder for sure.
I remember a weird late night advert in about 2000 with some guy at the airport getting drugs slipped into his bag when he wasn't looking, then it ended with him getting caught and sent to a weird foreign prison and him crying as they were shaving his head
