Basically completely gave up on even *pretending* to appeal to/represent people outside of large cities, something that I should be allowed to tattoo on the face of every single person who tries telling me Blair et. al. have some special prole-whispering wisdom.

New Labour strategy was pretty clear - rebuild their voter base by appealing to the aspirational working and lower-middle class in London, rely on the non-London working class and ethnic minorities (primarily concentrated in the cities of course) having nowhere else to go. Brexit only accelerated the attrition of those traditional heartlands - had nothing been changed they'd have gone blue just through sheer apathy within a decade or so anyway.

Liberal centrism always boils down to wanting to win through the absolute minimum effort, and creating excuses to that effect.

Neoliberal centrists campaign on fake leftism, do the bare minimum of it and otherwise empty centrism when they get in charge, then blame the inevitable backlash on being too far left. The end result of discarding every single policy because the Murdoch press pitched a fit about it is having absolutely nothing.

It's also that they're actively trying to please the press that is actively opposed to their very existence. It's like the world's dumbest kind of gaslighting.

Preppers mostly prep for a single event, and often would not do well in any other type of apocalypse.

They also seem to think that humanity will act like people in films, where it's everyone for themselves, rather than what normally happens in disasters, and people work together.

So in an actual doomsday event, it'll be them running off to their bunkers, then the local township raiding them for food a couple of weeks later after their mains water breaks.

Optimist mode - we're too adaptable a species to be completely wiped out. Millions, probably billions will die, but humanity will continue on.

IIRC, stories of Argentina's social collapse pretty much bear that out. The doomsday preppers were the first to go. Even the most helpless people in cities are the first to run to their neighbours to ask what the gently caress to do, and people generally want to keep the status quo or some semblance of it going first and foremost.

Thing is I'm pretty sure Fox News grabs its audience specifically because it presents all its poo poo in a wrapper that its original audience is trained to find comforting and appealing. Slick presentation, attractive and vaguely charismatic hosts speaking in accepted authoritative accents, enough variety and a comforting schedule to make a background noise of hate and fear while they sit on the couch staring or go about their day.

If you don't have all those elements, the bare minimums, the audience starts to pay attention rather than be passively brainwashed, and they don't want that!

Easy to forget that when most of this thread were teenagers there wasn't such a thing as "incel culture", & what incel culture basically did was build an ideologically sexist belief structure around perfectly normal teenaged thoughts like "I am sad that the girl I like prefers someone better looking than me even though he's kind of a dick" (as most teenaged boys are). There's a bunch of stuff which is hard to enjoy with hindsight, but we didn't have the benefit of hindsight at the time so

About half of this thread were teenagers when South Park was big, and so spent years of our lives laughing along to obviously racist jokes because no, you don't understand, it's because the joke is so stupid that it's a joke about racism & how stupid it is. Then we noticed that half of the people laughing along were literally nazis, and it stopped being funny. I guess nazis weren't back in such a big way back then either & a lot of us have punched a lot of nazis since to make up for it, but jfc we weren't half a bunch of cunts when I was younger & I am sorry to the world at large :(

Arrested adolescence is a big part of incel culture, though I'm pretty sure a lot of that is also sheltered, neglected and isolated suburban boys who basically stopped having socialisation once they graduated school and struggled to find any new outlet that wasn't online. The suburbs gently caress people up.
