Financial literacy is covered to some extent in PSHCE, but there's an absolute mountain of stuff to cover. I teach at a school that has a lesson of PSHCE a week, but there are plenty of schools who do PSHCE drop down days 2-3 times a year where you get a day off timetable to cover a huge chunk of PSHCE. This year in PSHCE my form (year 8) will have 39 lessons to learn about these topics. Most are single lessons, some you get two weeks. Relationships - Running away, body image, sex, contraception, consent, comfort zones, sexting, friendship Health & wellbeing - Fire safety, prescription drugs, knife crime, personal finance, physical health, smoking, alcohol, period poverty Wider world - Islamophobia, child rights, CSE, extremism, sweatshops, racism, xenophobia, law & the legal process, data. Personal finance was two lessons looking at salaries, the cost of living and a brief intro to budgeting.

ANYTHING YOU SOW posted:Yeah that sounds like a lot to cover, but all pretty useful stuff , do you think they take much of it onboard? Bits. It definitely opens the eyes of many to things that they might not know otherwise. For example nearly no-one in my class had an idea what a sweatshop was, by the end of it they had an idea and there was some discussion about why people buy things from Primark rather than more expensive places and the challenge that has (if you can barely afford food then it's hard to justify buying a t-shirt for £10-15 rather than £3 'just' because it wasn't made by a kid in Bangladesh being paid 50p a day).

Bobstar posted:I was too unspecific, the "silliness" is the second half of the sentence: "why didn't they teach us X life skills instead of this useless trigonometry crap" - there is room for both. I'm a secondary computing teacher so not a primary expert but the general answer is because there's a mountain of everything else to do. https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/at-school/ looks at it. https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum is the official documents about what the national curriculum covers. KS1+2 are primary. For languages in particular I'm sure a lack of specialist knowledge is a huge impact too. Primary teachers teach everything. Each primary school will have a subject lead who is the 'expert' for that subject. Having been around local primary schools who have computing leads that don't at all feel comfortable with it, I can imagine the need to have a French and Spanish expert would be too much for many. My secondary school still has a language as a compulsory GCSE option and that leads to a lot of grumpy students who disengage.

Miftan posted:In my experience being a lead in a subject is a promotion so "oh you've taught this for a couple of years and our old one left". They're by no means an expert. A lot of teachers aren't even experts in teaching (because let's face it, 3 years is not enough time at all. Nobody is an expert on their undergrad subject), let alone their subject. Very fair comment. My degree in Computing is more than a decade old and I remember pretty much none of it. My 'expertise' in the subject is a lot more down to my interest & self-study in recent years focused on the exam specification for GCSE & A-Level, but there are still bits that baffle me - the difference between all the methodologies for one! Thankfully they mainly need to know a few bullet points as opposed to an actual understanding of intricate differences between the Agile/RAD/Waterfall/Spiral methodologies.

I actually have no idea how you square the circle here between keeping the good things you get by allowing personal friendships and preventing harassment and abuse, from a policy perspective. Yeah. When I was in Mexico City taking Spanish classes at the uni there, we went out drinking with our Mexican history teacher (late 30s). It was great. Then he got wasted and started hitting on the 20ish year-old Korean students and they found it incredibly awkward.

Couldnt they buy a peak ticket to Bristol and then an off-peak one from there? Split ticketing is definitely allowed and can save decent money. Not done it for a couple of years but assuming it's not been cleaned up.

We have a Health Secretary that says that he would ignore mask recommendations in some circumstances. Really does feel like the Hancock video was released to get rid as he wasn't as aggressive as Javid.

hookerbot 5000 posted:I actually asked a class of secondary school kids this the other week - we were doing a lesson for Pride week and the importance of being an Ally. Part of it was the importance of not letting homophobic language pass and I used the example of calling things gay when you mean it's a bit rubbish. They looked a bit blank at that so I asked if it was still something people said and they said it wasn't so I got to feel extra old (but also pleased obviously). Lovely isn't it feeling old. DofE safeguarding came out this week and so sexting should be called sending nudes instead as that's the term used. Pride month was lovely. Lots of chatting about it and a few of them (year 8) worried that they didn't know yet. Lots of reassurance from others about how that's fine. Not just at the actual ending of the story, which was moving without being schmaltzy and somehow managed to make three of the four main characters choosing to end their existence seem like a happy ending and even get a few laughs out of it Jason's "Hey Chidi wait up!" is just the most perfect summary of the character and so the perfect ending for him, but at the meta-game of how the writers managed to escape what was, between seasons 2 and 3, looking increasingly like a fairly repetitive formula and throw in a hell of a twist right at what would have been, for a less brave creator, a natural ending point when they got to The Good Place having finally fixed the problems of the scoring system - to not only decide to explore the problems of a "perfect" eternity but also solve them once you've got to that point is ballsy as *hell*, no matter what way you cut it. Thanks for posting that. I watched the 4 seasons over the last few days. What a glorious show.

This meant instead of just going to the big ones like Chichen Itza and Tulum I went to a few where there was a field with a couple of stones that had been excavated. Nothing else visible other than the display board that had an artist's rendition of a temple and a few paragraphs about it. Absolutely baffling.

YouTube has different pricing depending on which country you are registered in. For example, if you give it an address in India then it's 189 rupee a month (£1.85). It doesn't really seem to impact much beyond the initial recommendations on YouTube Music which may be a lot of different types of Indian music. They are clearly aware I'm not there. Completely understandable. I'm assuming that the API only let's them receive transaction details. They can't actually log in to your bank as you don't give them your password. I think it's like when you use Single Sign On to access websites via Google/Facebook/Microsoft accounts. A key is granted and stored that lets them perform specific and limited functions.

Intermittent fasting and low carb are the two best ways I've found to control my weight. They combine together well too. Takes a few days to get used to it, but during lockdown 1 I ate in a 4 hour window (noon - 4pm) and had no issues with it. Now breakfast is huel with coconut flakes. Best thing for easy meals that taste good is a slow cooker. They're usually simple recipes too which helps.
