Evening, patrolmaaan.
Next week it looks like they’re finally going to start addressing the obvious twist that this is a fake planet and the big boss we just defeated was just an experiment/training program and not a real Dark Falz, so maybe?

The way they cut out the solo instance versions of urgent quests from the story have made it very confusing. I'm not on enough to do the urgent quests but each new chapter assumes you've done them.

Is this game any good? Or is it just boring and repetitive?

I played original PSO2 through like the 3rd? major story arc, but then got bored of it due to the 5000 systems in place.

The casino was cool though. I probably spent more time in the casino than doing anything else in the game.

The neatest part of the PSO2 story that I got through was when the entire fleet turns against the player character and you have that mission where the objective is to "eliminate [your player character]" and you have the giant objective UI marker on your own PC during it.

That segment didn’t originally have checkpoints, so I sure hope you had an afternoon free. Was still amazing to play through.

For some reason you have to watch the pre-Dark Falz cutscene again then do a solo version of the fight that skips straight to phase 2, after the defeating Dark Falz cutscene the new stuff starts.

There is another like 3 hour long story section after that (or before it). I think it's during Omega/Chapter 5.

If you didn't like base/PSO2, you're not going to like NGS/PSO2:NGS. NGS is more barebones (currently) than base and is being dripfed "episode 1" over the past 2-3 years with only like 3 new areas past Aelio. The weapon upgrade system is just as lovely as base, BTW.

No casino (yet?) but Sega is introducing "public housing" (the private apartments of base, basically) that give like 200 users a chance to visit all-at-once, but given how the playerbase is cratering because not even Japanese players are happy with the state of the game. (Note: Jan 26, 2022. They haven't done a survey since when Global noted that Japan is more unhappy with NGS than even global/the west :laffo: )

At this point, if you haven't been playing since launch in like July 2020 on Steam, I wouldn't bother. The only reason I login at this point is FOMO mission passes and the dailies that can be done in 20 mins a day. There is barely anything else. The new UQ's get BP crept to where it's a endless slog to keep up if you care about those (so I stopped caring) and the leveling is PSE burst grind to cap (which continues to raise every like 2-3 months) or trainias/grinding triggers to do those otherwise you're waiting for the drip-fed story that is done in 20mins to a day.

NGS was really disappointing to me compared to PSO2, there's a decently fun action base to work off but the content is sparse and has very little personality or charm. In retrospect it kind of feels like they wanted to practice making an open world for Sonic Frontiers more than anything else.

Honestly, the best part of PSO2, for me, was sitting in the casino playing Arkuma slots while watching the PSO2 Episode Oracle anime.

The rest the game was kinda meh in comparison.

Goddamn, give me an MMO that's in a casino.

Unless we're just fine sticking to this one for a while longer, I can't say I feel right doing something to raise the alarms before they actually add in something substantial to the core gameplay. At least, that's how I've felt in the aftermath of every single other "new episode" thread. I wanna know more about what they got planned for August that they said in some interview being "high difficulty single-party content with random elements" in terms of something worth investing in for gear without being overturned to hell and having special augments that only work in one specific rank of the quest

There's been a couple of interviews going round because of the version 2 update and each one paints a worse picture of the game.
The latest one has this "fun" update:

quote:

――Are there any plans to add a new region?

We currently don’t have any plans to regularly add things such as large regions in the future. However, we may add new maps to accompany new content.
I assume the game is still making money in Japan, otherwise to me this sounds like something that would be followed by an end of service announcement in a few months.

Evening, patrolmaaan.
I don’t think the game is actually going to EoS soon, but if there aren’t any plans for a new class/region then (knowing how slow they are to add content) even if they change their mind this month we probably wouldn’t get anything this year.
So then what does playing NGS in, say, November 2023 look like? Running around the exact same areas as the exact same classes doing the exact same thing that you were doing last year except the level numbers are higher?
If the only new thing is the build mode which will only ever appeal to a subset of the player base I don’t see how the number of players doesn’t just crater.

Like imagine if episode 4 of OG PSO2 launched without summoner or any new areas and all of the focus was on that PvP battle arena they added, and there were indications that there wouldn’t ever be any more classes or areas added to the game. I would forgive people for assuming that was the first step of winding down development on the game.

wait, didn't the Slayer class just come out in April or something? it's not much, but it's something; I don't think SEGA is canning PSO2 anytime soon, they're just not good at prioritizing and I'm just doubting phantasy star is a high priority for anyone with significant influence in the Sonic team more than anything else. this is all my opinion, of course, but it smells of incompetence rather than malice I suppose.

I really enjoyed what I played of the Étoile class, but NGS launched pretty soon after I unlocked it and I ended up quitting playing not long after that.

I recently started playing NGS, so I hope they introduce the other Scion classes at some point.

For now I'm playing Braver, which is what I played on PSO2 until I unlocked Étoile.

A lot of the scion mechanics got backported back into the base classes. Force's rod acts like phantom's, etoile's directional PA stuff was added to a lot of fighter's stuff, everyone has the hero dodge counterattack...

Official response is "go to the original casino"

quote:

OR: The ARKS Ship Casino has yet to make an appearance in Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. Is that a feature that players can expect to eventually return?

YK: We do not have any plans to implement the PSO2 Casino in NGS. Even if we were to transfer it over into NGS as-is with very minimal changes to the functionality, making it playable in NGS would be far more difficult and time-consuming than players might expect. As the Casino is still playable in the PSO2 blocks, rather than try to transfer over an experience that already exists, we’d like to focus on implementing new and unique gameplay experiences.

I spent 75% of my time in PSO2 in the casino. Best part of the game.

Hitlersaurus Christ

While a lot of the issues just boil down to questionable game design, I think a good deal of why the game is the way it is has to do with having a small budget and not enough people to work on it. The team was clearly not equipped to make an open world type game, let alone while simultaneously working on the new custom room system. The extra studio in Hokkaido they got working on the game to assist them seems to have gone to the cosmetic side of things rather than assisting the main team with the game itself.

But ultimately even with more talent, I think New Genesis is a fundamental mismatch of gameplay styles. The open world itself is designed pretty well for exploration, but PSO2’s main gameplay is straight up combat and that’s been relegated to small combat zones. MMOs can find this balance, but they also have way more content. I look forward to them making more classic PSO2 styles linear quests.

To be honest, the game isn't spectacular, but it does scratch that nostalgic itch for the goofy, ad-hoc fun of PSO on the Dreamcast and GameCube (yeah, I convinced my parents to let me go online on the Dreamcast back in the day).

A lot of the latter half of episode 5 came from backlash from their original plans with it. They actually stated they intended hero to be the only class people would play (they were hilariously overpowered at launch and there were multiple patches solely made to catch the other classes up) and expected bustin' and story to carry the entire arc.

Im not exaggerating on hero being leaps and bounds above everyone else. Episode 5 launch made Deus Esca fights take half as long once people levelled their heroes up.
